The Emergence of Modern Europe—2016 Take-home Essay Examination

Answer any one of the following questions in an analytical 3-4-page essay (double-

spaced). Please incorporate into the essay some discussion of at least one primary source,

taken from the Fordham University Internet Modern History Sourcebook, which can be

found here (and on Blackboard): http://legacy.fordham.edu/Halsall/mod/modsbook.asp.

No resources other than the course textbook, your class notes, and the indicated website

(and those it links directly to) are necessary or permitted. The exam must be uploaded to

Blackboard before the beginning of class on Wednesday, April 5.

1) What were some of the political and historical underpinnings of 19th-century

nationalism and the idea that nations should have states?

2) How would you explain the origins and genesis of 19th-century European

socialism, and what differentiated the demands of socialists and liberals in the 19th

century?

3) How did 19th-century changes in the European and global economies affect

notions of gender and family?

Helpful hint: it may seem at first glance that each question lines up with one particular

lecture/chapter in the textbook, but in fact to answer any of the three questions fully you

need a broader understanding of themes developed across multiple lectures and chapters.
