PART -A

ANSWER ANY THREE QUESTIONS

1. Draw a flow diagram showing activities and main functions in a prefabrication plant? What
are the main groups in to which these activities are classified? State an expression for the output
capacity of the total production system? In a concrete plant set up for a flyover construction
requires water reducing cum set retarding admixture at a rate of 1.5 kg/day. The material is
delivered by the supplier in sealed containers, and is stored at the site storage. The site storage
space can be hired and the cost including rent, depreciation and maintenance for the facility works
out to be Rs. 20000/- per month for capacity of storage of 50 kg, for other capacity the cost ca be
assumed to be proportional. The cost of storing that includes interest on capital invested in the
stored material and the cost of handling the material in store is Rs. 10/- per kg, per day. The fixed
cost of delivery including order processing cost and transportation cost per unit shipment is Rs.
3000/-. What are the optimal time interval between shipments and necessary storage capacity
required? 9

2. A casting yard producing segmental elements for a long bridge produces 3 elements per day
on an average. Elements can be shifted to the stock yard after 24 hours, however after that at least 7
days are required for development of sufficient strength for further handling and erection. The
casting yard can have a stoppage of work for a period of maximum 6 days due to machine
breakdown or supply of material etc. Similarly it is estimated that the erection process may have a
maximum stoppage of 4 days. A proposed lead time between delivery to the site and production is
assumed to be 15 days. What is the storage capacity required for the stockyard? Explain why is it
necessary that the casting yard lay out shall provide for desired proximity between related function?
Explain how this can be ensured through design. Give typical examples of layout solutions
schematically? 9

3a). 250 wall panels are to be supplied to the erection agency over 6 months for one time. The
set up cost per batch in the plant is Rs. 4600/-. The plant out put is at the rate of 2 panels per day
and a minimum 15 days curing and strength development time is required. Storage cost per panel
per month works out to be Rs. 750/-. What is the optimal batch size and production cycle time?
5

3b) On what factors the maximum horizontal pressure on form work due to fresh concrete
depends? Show a typical pressure diagram and give expression for horizontal pressure. If a 100 mm
slump concrete is placed at a rate of 2.5m per hour for a 250 mm wall 3 m deep at 25 ˚C what is the
maximum expected pressure? 4

4a). Explain with a diagram the principle of slip form construction? 4

4b) The circular beam (in vertical plane) in a cylindrical silo for storage of urea in a fertilizer plant
has a span of 25 m and a rise of 3m. What is the radius of the circle? What is the maximum slope on
the surface of the form work? Locate the points on the formwork at a distance of 1 and 2 m from the
crown with reference to the crown? 5

1. A cooling tower of an air conditioning system situated at a distance of 90 m from a noise sensitive
building. Manufacturer has provided the following data for pre-dominant frequency 500 Hz. Power
level 95 dB and pressure level at 15m distance from the source center is 63 dB. A long 6 m high
barrier is proposed at a distance of 10 m from the barrier. Height of the source is 2m above base and
normal level of the receiver is 0.9m above base level of the wall. What is the noise level at the
receiver? 9

2. A room of dimension 20X10X4 m3 is used as laboratory room. A 90 dB (PWL) equipment which is

a non-directional source is placed close to 10 m wall at 1 m away from it. Average absorption in the
room is 0.2. Calculate the noise level at a location 8.5m away from the source. Determine the average
absorption value required to reduce this dB level by 15dB. What will be the change in reverberation
time of the room due change in absorption. 10

3. Calculate the distance of last row not requiring elevation in an auditorium given that height of the
source above normal head level in front seat is 2m. Row spacing is 0.9m. What is the elevation of the
third elevated row beyond the above distance? Head clearance is 12 cm. Calculate the above
elevations using two methods 1) IS code formula 2) logarithmic spiral formula. 10

4. Calculate IRC of daylight factor in a room of size 543.5 m3 with height is 3.5 m, and window on
its complete north wall with no external obstruction Sill height is 0.90m and the window height is 1.5
m. The average reflectivity of glass, walls, ceiling and the floor can be taken as 0.15, 0.6, 0.3 and 0.2
respectively. Assume any other data necessary. 5

5. Calculate the sol air temperature and U value of a brick masonry wall with a cavity at the center
having plastered finish on either side, of area 10 m2 given the following data:Thermal conductivity of
plaster: 0.725 W/m°C, that of brick masonry = 0.890 W/m°C; Surface conductances out side=12.5
W/m2°C and that inside is 8.25 W/m2°C; Thickness of the plaster on either side=15 mm, thickness of
the masonry= 225 mm.. Mean solar radiation intensity incident on the outside surface= 125 W/m2,
The short wave absorbtivity for outside surface is 0.4. The cavity resistance can be assumed to be 0.05
m2 C/W Assume any other data if necessary. 7

6. Calculate the quantity of air flow when the outdoor wind velocity is 6 km/hour and the wind is
incident at 45 to the walls having window area of 6 m2 which is half as that in the walls on the
leeward sides. How does sill height affect the indoor air velocity? Calculate the sill height correction
for a sill height of 0.7m? 7

1. A source of sound of 10 µW is placed in a room having total absorption of 21 meter square Sabine
and an average absorption of 0.05, what is the sound level at a distance of 20 m from the source, when
the directivity index along the direction is 3.01? Compare this sound level with sound level that would
have been observed at an open field, with source condition and directivity remaining same. For the
room mentioned the mean free path is 12 m, what is the reverberation time of the room? 12

2. A machine operates at 15000 rpm, and weighs approximately 200 kg with all its accessories. What
is the static deflection and equivalent spring stiffness of the mounting for structure borne noise
reduction of 25 dB? Assume negligible damping. If the desired Transmission Loss value of the floor
is 35 dB for airborne noise generated by the machine what is the thickness of the floor required if the
average density of the floor material is 2300 kg/m3. Draw diagrams to explain the principles of
floating construction, when and under what situation will you adopt floating construction? 11

3. What is the intensity of a 2500 lumen-point source? If it is spherical in shape with a radius of 5 cm,
what would be its brightness? Light from this source incident on a surface of area 0.4 m2 at a distance
of 3 m from the source, calculate the illumination on the surface. Flux on this surface of reflectivity
0.4, if contributes to internal reflections in a room of internal surface area, 10 m2, what would be the
average reflected illumination in the room? What are the factors on which glare depends? State an
expression for glare index and hence explain how can you reduce the glare caused by a bright external
surface near the window? Express sky factor in all possible mathematical form. 11

4 Calculate the mean internal temperature in a room 55 in floor area and 3 m in height, given that
outside mean air temperature is 30C, one of the north facing wall has a window of dimension
51.5m, other two walls connects the room which have same room temperature as this room. The
fourth wall of the room is exposed to south direction. The room is in the first floor of a three storied
building and temperatures of the rooms just below and above can be again assumed to be same as this
room. U value of the solid portion of the walls is 2 W/m2C and that for the glass is 4.8 W/m2C.
Assume 2 air changes/hour for the room. Mean Solar radiation on the south facing wall is 300 W/m2
and mean internal heat generated is 870 Watts. = 0.4, hO= 12.5 W/m2C Assume any other data
suitably if necessary. 10

5. Draw diagram to explain the actions of horizontal, vertical and egg crate shading device. Given an
east facing wall, what are the vertical and horizontal shadow angles those will just block the solar
radiation entering the window when the sun is at an azimuth angle of 120˚ measured clockwise from
north and the altitude angle of the sun is 60˚?
