About The Author ....................................................... 15
Did you ever wonder how do atoms combine? And What
pushes these atoms to become one compound?
The need of having 8 electrons at the outermost
energy level is what each atom desires (except for noble gases).
Outermost electrons are called valence electrons which is
represented by Group # for all Representative elements in the
periodic table. These electrons are directly involved in forming
bonds to form compound. The # of valence electrons can be shown
through Lewis Symbol which is composed of chemical symbol of
element & dots that represent # of valence electron.
The sharing or complete transfer of valence electrons
indicates that atom has attained stability. It is only through this
process that a compound is formed.
Well, in this kit, you will enjoy as you learn the journey
of combining atoms of different elements in their quest of becoming
stable and contented. But, be reminded also that this kit is limited
only with in complete transfer of electrons in compound formation.
So… be prepared and enjoy your journey! 1
To start the journey these are the following goals
that you need to be done at the at the end of the topic.

Main Task: Explain the formation of ionic bonds;

(S9T-IIa-13)
Sub Tasks:
1. Identify the # of valence electrons
of atoms based on their group # in
the periodic table.
2. Write the Lewis symbol of
Representative elements
using dots as valence electrons
3. Illustrate how ionic bond is formed Are you ready?
Let's go...

ACTIVITY CARD 1: “HERE’S MY #...CATCH ME BABY”
Directions: Below are atomic fishes bearing their group number. Catch each by drawing a string that
would connect them to the bowl having the correct valence electron tags that are found below .

ACTIVITY CARD 2: FILL ME WITH DOTS
Directions: Given are the different sea creatures. Ooppss! Be watchful for those bearing atomic
symbol (that’s their identity!). Using your answer in activity card 1, write the Lewis Symbol by
surrounding each identified creature with dots. Be ready and have fun.!

ACTIVITY CARD 3 : TAKEN FOR STABILITY
Directions: show the formation of ionic bond by transferring the valence electron of metallic
atoms towards non-metallic atoms . Illustrate electron transfer using arrows, write the ions
formed, cross multiply charges, and write the ionic compound formed .

ASSESSMENT CARD 1: LEAD ME HOME.
Directions: Sea creatures are lost!!! Will you help them find their way back home?
Please do help them by simply posting their atomic symbol to their proper location on
the next page. In that way, they can easily find their way back home.

ASSESSMENT CARD 2: HIT ME RIGHT!
Directions: Fix me by simply unscramble the letters below to form a word. Write
your answer on the space provided beside the scrambled letters.

1. vleecan secelnotr = ________ the outermost electrons that are directly

involved in forming bonds.
2 . silwe ybsmlo = ________ chemical symbol of elements and dots.
3. cnioi nobd = ________ a bond formed by complete transfer of
electrons.
4. ytitsbial = ________ conditio n attained by atom after electon transfer
5. tecto lure = ________the rule of having 8 electrons at the outermost
energy level of atom in order to become stable.

ASSESSMENT CARD 3: PERFECT COMBINATION

DIRECTION: Write the ions formed from the given

combinations, cross multiply their charges, and give the
formulas of ionic compounds between:

1. POTASSIUM and CHLORINE

2. BARIUM and SULFUR

3. CALCIUM and PHOSPHORUS

ENRICHMENT CARD 1: MATCH AND MATE
Directions: using the periodic table on the next page choose an
atom from representative elements using their valence electron
(Gp. #), give the possible ionic compounds these atoms can
form.[hint : atoms from Gp1 & Gp2 are best paired with atoms
from Gp7, Gp6, & Gp5.] The more pairings you can make, the
more points you will obtain. Have fun and Good luck!!!

 Atoms combine to become stable
 Valence shell is the outermost shell
having the highest energy value
 Valence electrons are electrons in the
outermost shell/valence shell. This
electrons are directly involved in
chemical bonding to form compound.
 Octet rule is the rule of having 8
electrons in the outermost energy level of
atomic orbital. This makes the atom
stable and unreactive (noble gases).
 Lewis symbol is composed of chemical
symbol of element and surrounded by
dots as the valence electrons.
 Ionic bond is the bond formed when
there is complete transfer of electrons
between atoms.
