PROBLEM STATEMENT:

“EFFECTIVENESS OF ICE PACK APPLICATION ON PAIN RESPONSE PRIOR TO


INTRAVENOUS PROCEDURES AMONG CHILDREN IN PAEDIATRIC WARDS OF
SELECTED HOSPITAL, AT HYDERABAD, T.S.”

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of the study are:

 Application of ice pack at the site before the intravenous procedure in experimental group.
 Compare pain response during intravenous procedures among experimental and control group.
 Determine the association between the pain response of children with selected demographic
variables among children.

SECTION: II

VISUAL ANALOGUE SCALE:

The visual analogue scale (VAS) is a psychometric response scale which can be used
in questionnaires. It is a measurement instrument for subjective characteristics or attitudes that cannot be
directly measured. When responding to a VAS item, respondents specify their level of agreement to a
statement by indicating a position along a continuous line between two end-points.

 The VAS is self completed by respondent.


 The respondent is asked to place a line perpendicular to VAS line at place point that
represents their pain intensity.
 After the patient has marked. The score is measured distance of 10cm.

0 : No pain

1–4 :Mild pain

5–7 : Moderate pain

8 – 10 : Severe pain
