MECHATRONICS

ASSIGNMENT 1
Due date 19/09/19
1. The water level in an open vessel is to be monitored by a differential pressure cell
corresponding to the difference in pressure between that at the base of the vessel and
the atmosphere. Determine the range of differential pressures the cell will have to
respond to if the water level can vary between zero height above the cell measurement
point and 2m above it.
2. A platinum resistance temperature detector has a resistance of 100.00Ω at 0oC, 138.50Ω
at 100oC and 175.83Ω at 200oC. What will be the non-linearity error in oC at 100oC if
the detector is assumed to have a linear relationship between 0 and 200oC.
3. A hydraulic cylinder is to be used to move a work piece in a manufacturing operation
through a distance of 50mm in 10sec. a force of 10KN is required to move the work
piece. Determine the required working pressure and hydraulic liquid flow rate if a
cylinder with a piston of 100mm is available.
4. The automatic control system for the temperature of a bath of liquid consists of a
reference voltage fed into a differential amplifier. This is connected to a relay which
then switches on or off the electrical power to a heater in the liquid. Negative feedback
is provided by a measurement system which feeds a voltage into the differential
amplifier. Sketch a block diagram of the system and explain how the error signal is
provided.

ASSIGNEMNT II
Due date 04/10/19
1. A hot object, capacitance C and temperature T, cools in a large room at temperature
Tr. If the thermal system has a resistance R, derive an equation describing how the
temperature of the hot object changes with time and give an electrical analogue.
2. Using a block diagram, describe the relationship of a chassis of a car as a result of a
wheel moving along the road attached to the suspension.
3. The F2 series Mitsubishi PLC is specified as having the following;
Diagnosis: Programmable check (sum, syntax, and Circuit check), watchdog timer,
battery voltage and power supply voltage. Explain the significance of the terms.
4. Propose “if-then” rules for a temperature controller that is used to operate a boiler
and has a valve allowing water to circulate round central heating radiators when it
only operates at a certain time period.

ASSIGNMENT III
Due date 18/10/19
a) With a suitable block diagram, explain the construction and working of fuzzy logic
inference system.
b) A fuzzy logic system implemented in an air conditioning system is shown in Fig 1. The
air conditioner must maintain an indoor temperature in the range of 18℃-25℃ from an
ambient temperature range of 0℃- 40℃ which is used as the input for the control
system. Variables controlled include the compressor speed, fin direction and fan speed.
i. Describe five linguistic variables and their corresponding range that can be
applied in the fuzzy logic algorithm.
ii. Draw the membership function graph for the input temperature.
iii. Create a matrix of room temperature values versus target temperature values
that the air conditioning system is expected to provide.
iv. Build a set of rules into the knowledge base in the form of IF-THEN-ELSE
structures.
