Introduction to Engineering

What do you see in the picture?

Is it a train? Ok its a train ,

Can someone tell me what kind of train it is? Is it a steam train?

Good..

Lets look another picture... What these workers are doing? What they are working on?

Are they assembling something? Yes they are doing assembly of two wheelers... [ motor cycles as the
popular name]

Do you recognize these?

You might have seen them in popular TV shows on channels such as discovery, history tv 18 etc.

They are robots...

They are doing certain process for which they are programmed....

The things we just saw are important links of revolution that shaped the industry....

The first area popularly known as Industry 1.0 ...

It was the initialization of industry

Its key features were usage of water and steam as a power elements

Thus led to reduce the time required to complete the task and also reduce the manpower...

In the second industry revolution, electricity became the medium to power machinery

Concept of production line came into picture.

Which increased the production and affordable goods that could be delivered to customers
In the 3rd revolution also called as computer revolution, computing power was used not only to solve the
problem but also to automate process which needed minimum manual intervention.

Robots were introduced to automate various tasks

The 4th industrial revolution is combination of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence,
machine learning, virtual reality and so on, which will led to smart factories.

Smart factory will provide high efficiency, quality, sustainable output etc.

The important part of industry 4.0 is cyber physical systems, which are integration, computation,
networking and physical process.

Let us now focus on What is Engineering?

We have been talking about industry revolutions, industry and engineering go hand-in-hand..

As the video suggest Engineering touches every aspect of our day to day life.

Starting from brushing our teeth to sleeping at night.. while listening to some song in a comfortable bed..

But what is the element that separates out whatever we have learned at school and things that we are
going to learn at engineering....??

Let us answer some questions..

4+3 = 7

Train example .... 150 meters

Learning at a school has a fixed pattern

It is exercise based learning, we learn how to solve a particular problem and then solve similar problems
which have got unique answers

The hands-on experience is less..

from candle

In order to get light in darkness we use some artificial light source like a candle....

but due to electrical energy, we have light source such as bubs, leds, and tubelights
but the process of switching from candle to bulb was not straight forward and easy. There are many
options......

As we just saw, the problem had no fixed pattern.

Higher level problem solving skills are required to solve it.

Many (applications) experiments were done to see the best possible solution.

It involved self learning.

As an engineering, we need to provide variety of solutions by thinking creatively and critically.

Let us now talk about science and engineering.....

Try to recognize the person in the picture and tell whether, he is an scientist or engineer

1. Sir M Vishwesarya -- Engineer

2. Sundar Pichai --- Engineer

3. C V Raman --- Scientist

4. Steve Jobs -- Engineer

5. Einstein -- Scientist

6. Dr A P J Kalam -- Both Scientist and Engineer

7. Robert Dawny ---- He is an Actor

Danial bernoulli was a swiss mathematician. As a physicist he proposed a principle in 1738, which is now
popularly known as bernoullis principle in fluid dynamics.

Wright brothers tested their plane named Flyer in the year 1903.

There is a interesting connection between bernoullis and wright brothers.

Flyer use the bernoullis principle to fly..

As we can see in the picture the upper part of aircraft wing is curved and lower part is flat.

The air at the top surface moves faster causing drop in pressure.
Pressure at the top is low, At the bottom it is high. Thus the wing gets lifted due to net upward force.

So, what then separates science and engineering?

It is a Approach..!!

The essence of science is inquiry.(asking for information)

In the physical systems, we start with some object to study, we measure some aspects related to it.

Which gives us data..

By comparing the data an abstract model is created which is a scientific theory, law or principle.

Engineering approach on the other hand

First creates a concept.

Through design, specifications are generated.

Using the specifications, a useful product is produced.

Scientist see the things as they are and ask how?

Engineers see the things as they could be and ask why not?

Now we are going to start with activity....

Read out the details on the slides..

Activity Continued

Everyone has tested their catapult, let us check how successful each one was...

What are the various fields of engineering.....

1. Civil Engineering:

We know that Civil engineering deals with the construction of infrastructure such as house & buildings.
It also deals with construction of bridges, highways, and water reservoirs.

2. Electrical Engineering:
Can you imagine life without electricity? Most of the things that we use in our daily life are working on
electricity. Electrical engineering controls the operations of power systems (MSEB) to provide reliable,
quality and efficient electricity. Deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics,
and electromagnetism. Future is electric car.

3. Agricultural Engineering:

We are aware of the current situation of agricultural field. There is need to make improvement in the
agricultural field. Agricultural engineering deals with improving crop productivity, sustainable
farming(organic), smart farming

4.Plastic and Polymer:

Polymer Engineering uses the theory and knowledge of Chemical Engineering/Technology to solve
various problems involving the production and use of polymers.

5. Mechanical Engineering:

Mechanical Engineering deals with the design and development of mechanisms to transfer forces and to
do particular task with the help of machines. It also Manufacture different heavy tools and machineries.

6. Electronics and Tele-communication engineering:

To design systems using electronic devices, circuits, VLSI technology for different applications. It has
made us available the equipments like Television, Radio, computers, telephones etc.

7. Computer Science and Engineering:

Deals with Basic elements of computer programming and networking.
