First and Only Paper

Ordinary Examination

Examiner: Dr Hui Jiao

Time allowed: Three (3) hours

Question 1. (15 Marks)

A reducing angled elbow shown in Figure 1 changes the diameter of the pipe from
650 mm at the entrance to 437 mm at the exit. The elbow is used to direct water flow
into the atmosphere at a mass flow rate of 140kg/s. The density of water is 1000 kg/m3.
The weight of the elbow and the water in it is negligible. If the flow in the pipe is
steady and without friction loss, determine:

1) The gauge pressure at the centre of the inlet of the elbow.

[5 marks]

2) The anchoring force needed to hold the elbow in place.

[10 marks]

Question 2. (20 Marks)

The viscosity of a fluid is measured with a viscometer that contains two 400 mm long
concentric cylinders as shown in Figure 2. The internal cylinder, with a diameter of 120 mm,
is rotating at 300 rounds per minute. The outer cylinder, with a diameter of 123 mm, is fixed.
If the torque required for the rotation of the internal cylinder is 1.8 Nm, determine the
viscosity of the fluid.

Question 3. (20 Marks)

Draw axial force, shear force and bending moment diagrams of the frame that is pin
supported at A and roller supported at B as shown in Figure 3. Member CE is rigidly
bent at E and rigidly connected to member AD at D. (Ignore members self-weight.)
Sign conventions must be observed.

Question 4. (15 Marks)

Two members with the same cross-sectional area of 1000 mm2 are glued together to carry a
tensile force as shown in Figure 4. If the shear strength and tensile strength of the glue are 7
MPa and 14 MPa, use Mohr’s circle to determine:

a. The optimised angle a for achieving the highest tensile force [5 marks]
b. The ultimate tensile force that the glued sample can carry [10 marks]

Question 5. (30 marks)

Beam AB is simply supported with the cross-sectional dimensions shown in Figure
5.
a. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams of Beam AB.
[10 marks]
b. Calculate the maximum tensile stress on Beam AB.
[10 marks]
c. Calculate the deflection at D of Beam AB if the Young’s modulus of the
beam material is E=200 GPa .
