Types of Stocks

Small Cap Stocks

The stocks of small companies that have the potential to grow rapidly are classified as small-
cap stocks. These stocks are the best option for an investor who wishes to generate significant
gains in the long run; as long he does not require current dividends and can withstand price
volatility.
As many of these companies are relatively new, it is difficult to predict how they will
perform in the market. Being small enterprises, growth spurts dramatically affect their values
and revenues.
On the other hand, the stocks of these companies tend to be volatile and may decline
dramatically.

Most Initial Public Offerings are for small-cap companies, although these days large
companies do tend to source the capital markets for expansion plans. Aggressive mutual
funds are also enthusiastic about adding small-cap stocks in their portfolios. Because they
have the advantage of being highly growth oriented, small-cap stocks can forego paying
dividends to investors, which enables the profits earned to be reinvested for future growth.

Mid Cap Stocks

Mid-cap stocks are typically stocks of medium-sized companies. These are stocks of well-
known companies, recognized as seasoned players in the market. They offer you the twin
advantages of acquiring stocks with good growth potential as well as the stability of a larger
company.

Mid-cap stocks also include baby blue chips; companies that show steady growth backed by a
good track record. They are like blue-chip stocks (which are large-cap stocks) but lack their
size. These stocks tend to grow well over the long term.

Large Cap Stocks

Stocks of the largest companies (many being blue chip firms) in the market such as Tata,

13 | P a g e
Reliance, ICICI are classified as large-cap stocks. Being established enterprises, they have at
their disposal large reserves of cash to exploit new business opportunities.

The sheer volume of large-cap stocks does not let them grow as rapidly as smaller capitalized
companies and the smaller stocks tend to outperform them over time. Investors, however gain
the advantages of reaping relatively higher dividends compared to small- and mid-cap stocks
while also ensuring the long-term preservation of their capital.

Company Analysis

Working Department

The company, essentially, has departments designated for specific tasks. There exists a
marketing department, with which we were suppose to work, whose prime task was to make
sure that the main offerings offered by the company are rightly marketed and are made
visible to the public eye. They were involved with setting up appointments through calling or
personal contacts and also advertising through print media and other sources. In the case of
the software and the other products offered, the 4 P’s of marketing were applicable as
follows:

1. Product : The products that Rupeeseed was offering were a trading software called
RapidRupee, a mobile application called MobiRupee, the website Rupeeseed.com and
the low bandwidth side RupeeLite.
2. Price : The price of just the software, was as follows:

Duration Price
1 Year 18000
6 Months 9000
3 Months 3500

However, if the customer wanted to be a client of Rupeeseed, all he was suppose to do

was to open a demat account with the company and all the products offered by them
would be available free of cost to him as well as the clients under him. The prices, i.e.
the commission for trading, etc. were negotiable with respect to the kind of business
that the customer did.
3. Place : The products that are offered are such that they are obviously useful to only
the people who are brokers, sub brokers, franchisees or individual clients. Hence, they
needed to be marketed in the main trading areas of Mumbai. They can be ordered
online or customers can call the helpline and ask for a door step delivery.
4. Promotion : In such kind of products, promotion can be a very crucial stage as it is
kind of a niche product. If the company ties up with some institutions wherein they
train new investors to invest smartly, they can have some promotional offers of
providing the product at a certain discounted rate. Print ads in business newspapers
was also a good way to market the product. Also, some business seminars in certain

15 | P a g e
specific business parks also take place regularly where people come to demonstrate
their products and discuss some ideas. These can also be a good place to make sure
that the product is seen.

Competition

There are many softwares available in the market such as Rupeeseed. They have some
features which are similar to that of Rupeeseeds where as they lack in some areas as well.
Their cost structure and other details are as follows:

The Dream and The Plan of the Company

The Dream
The company has a very specific dream. In the coming few years, the dream was to
spread the equity market cult across the country and making investing a pleasant
experience. The Idea was to take the markets to the investors instead of the investors
having to come to the markets and to give them fair, transparent efficient and time
bound services. It was with this dream that the Acumen group was born.

The Plan
In order to achieve this dream, the company had to do some very good planning. It
involved managing a lot of resources and allocating them with proper thought.
Some important areas were identified as follows:
1. Great HR
2. Entire range of financial products
3. Great technology
4. Great research and awareness programs
5. Great infrastructure and reach

The total number of financial products offered to the customers were as follows:

1. Equity trading
2. Commodity trading
3. Currency features
4. Interest rate futures
5. Depository services
6. Mutual funds
7. Insurance
8. IPO

20 | P a g e
Tabulation and Findings

The most primary benefit of interning with Rupeeseed apart from the fact that it provided me
with great insights and knowledge about working in a corporate environment was that it gave
us interns a lot of free hand to improvise and devise new techniques and models in order to
reach out to prospective clients. Hence, we were involved with directly interacting with
clients, calling them and pitching the offerings of the company, fixing appointments and
going there to meet the client and give him a demonstration of the software. It involved using
different techniques to convince them and I had to put all my theoretical knowledge of
marketing to test.

Shown below is the list of the clients that I had given a demonstration to. The number of calls
made per day would be around a 100 from which some appointments for the forthcoming
days would be fixed. Thus, this also gave us an opportunity to learn the sales pitch that
marketing managers need to learn, especially on a phone conversation.

Interpretations and Conclusions

Having worked with a firm like Rupeeseed, I got a lot of exposure with respect to the actual
market situations that prevail today. It also gave me an in-depth understanding of how people
in the corporate world work and some soft skills like punctuality and regularity.

Talking about the software and the other offerings that the company had to offer, the general
reaction of the people, be it main brokers or individual clients, was that the USP’s of the
offerings were now also implemented in the software used by them at their firms. Also,
others also stated that they were very happy with the other software versions that they were
currently using and that they did not want to switch to a totally new software since they
would have to learn to operate it from scratch and it would take some time for them to be
totally well versed with it.

Some even stated that the price of the software was too high for them to afford it. The pricing
structure for RapidRupee was as follows:

Duration Price
1 Year 18000
6 Months 9000
3 Months 3500

On comparing to the other existing softwares in the market like Odin, NOW and Metastock,
the price of this software was on the higher side.

Hence, to conclude, it was found that there were many reasons for people to not be too keen
to buy this software. Some of them are listed as below:

1. High price
2. No interest to switch to new software from already existing software
3. Do not use softwares. Work on tips basis
4. Main broker has their own customised software

Hence, according to me, the company has to look into these matters in order to make sure
that they got a huge market share and also need to concentrate more on the marketing
aspect. People will only be interested to buy the offerings if they are aware about its
features and thus, they need to be conveyed clearly.

27 | P a g e
Reporting

Working with a firm like Rupeeseed did give us a broad insight into how a corporate
office works. We were required to present detailed analysis and daily reporting about the
clients that we approached. An MIS system was also set up so that regularity was
maintained. Mails regarding any information was to be sent to our project guide on
saurabh@rupeeseed.com and other queries and doubts were always cleared via telephonic
conversations as well as regular face to face meeting with the staff at Rupeeseed.

The office details are:

28 | P a g e
Recommendations

The offerings of Rupeeseed have some excellent features which cannot be matched with
the other existing softwares that are in the market. Some of them are as follows:

1. Live Scanner
2. Trend Scanner
3. R & S Symbol Watch
4. Intraday Recovery/Fall
5. Charts
6. Unusual Volume
7. Open V/S High Low
8. Top Gainers and Losers
9. Time and Sales
10. Watchlist

All of the above features are used extensively to analyse the live market and to use the
results to invest wisely in certain stocks. However, still people prefer other softwares
rather than this. Some of the recommendations according to me in order to ensure that the
customer base of Rupeeseed broadens are as follows:

1. They need to concentrate more on marketing activities. There is no use of a good

product if its features and benefits are not conveyed to people as they would
remain ignorant of it and hence, there would be no sales.
2. There needs to be more transparency in the company within its employees. The
entire team and management is extremely hardworking and passionate having
adequate knowledge about the offerings and the values of the company. However,
when it comes to sharing of relevant information and approaching clients from
different cities, there needs to be more transparency amongst the employees as
this would lead to more clarity and inturn, help the company to perform better and
more efficiently.
3. There were customers who liked the software and its features as well as the other
offerings of Rupeeseed. However, they had some own requirements of theirs,
which if fulfilled, would lead to them buying the software. The staff needs to
consider these needs and try to incorporate them into the software. Hence, they

29 | P a g e
should concentrate on customization as none of the other existing softwares in the
market have that kind of an offer.
4. The company can also adopt a service helpline which shall only concentrate on
providing assistance to its customers and give them tips on what shares to buy and
sell, etc.
5. In order to promote its offerings, it should go for tie ups with some organisations
and colleges as well. There are some colleges wherein students are required to
have a demat account and if the firm can target these colleges with good schemes,
it would be beneficial for both Rupeeseed as well as the organisation with which it
is tying up.
6. The company can also organise some programs wherein they train new investors
about how to invest in stock markets and thus, it would be easy for them to learn
this new software as they have no prior idea about any other existing software.
7. The company can also hold seminars and informative functions for corporates as it
would give them a lot of exposure and they would get a chance to showcase the
unique features of the software and their other offerings to the people who work in
this sector directly.
8. They can also have tie ups with sites like Just Dial and Ask Laila so that their ads
are featured in the relevant categories when users hit the search button.

30 | P a g e
Limitations

There was no doubt about the fact that Rupeeseeds offerings were very unique and one of
their kind. However, as interns and being new to this field, it was difficult for me to interact
with clients and learn the art of actually ‘pitching’ a product. We were not aware about the
kind of responses people working in this field are expected to give and hence, we had to be
very impulsive while answering their queries.

Another limitation that was faced by us when we were trying to sell the software was its high
price. People were already using other products and were well versed with them. Hence, to
introduce such a product and that too with the limitation of having such a high price was a
huge hurdle. Also, most of the traders in the Mumbai area were already using an analytical
software called Falcon and other too like NOW, Odin, Metastock, etc. It was a major
limitation to convince them to switch to this new main broker.

Being interns, we were obviously not briefed about the internal trade secrets of the company
and its pricing schemes. Thus, there were times when clients would want to know some very
specific technical details and other information regarding the pricing strategies of the
