Optical fibres are fibres made of glass which transport a signal
containing several types of information at very high speeds in the
form of pulses of light.
This technology allows very high data flows to be achieved,

up to several tens of Gigabits/second.
The use of optical fibre technology allows networks to be fed over

long distances with minimum losses. It also offers the advantage
of being insensitive to electromagnetic interference.
3M offers fibre optic solutions for the main types of networks for
the long- and short-distance markets:
FTTH : With its extensive experience in FTTH, 3M offers a

complete solution from the fibre optic node (exchange) up to the
subscriber point (interior distribution device).

Description of the FTTH Network
ON (Optical Node)
The ON is the location which houses the active components for transmission and switching and
which acts as the interface between the collection and access networks.
Optical distribution systems are available for open frames or for 19" racks. The choice between these
two installation options mainly depends on the size of the location.
For a large, shelter-type location the RFO NG solution on open frames is more suitable for more
flexibility during patching.

Transport Network
The transport network, also known as the access network, routes the fibres from the access node to
the street cabinet. High capacity fibre optic cables and splice protection enclosure are used for this
part of the network.
3M offers a full range of splice protection enclosures.
There are four criteria of selection:
- Network configuration: It is essential to know, whether configuration is of MID SPAN, STRAIGHT
JOINT, DERIVATION PONT or DISTRIBUTION TYPE.
The type of configuration involved will determine the front face of the housing.
- The environment: This criteria determines the necessary IP (Protection class) for the housings.
Locations with direct water exposure may need a higher IP class.
- The capacity: This relates to the number and type of splices at the point of connection
- The cables: This relates to cable characteristics such as the diameter, the number
of fibres and the structure.

Description of the FTTH Network
FTTH Access and Distribution Network
The access and distribution network includes the section from the street cabinet up
to the the fibre optic distribution point (DP). The street cabinet is a point where the
building operator provides other operators with access to the lines. The fibre optic
distribution point (DP) is the node in the access network architecture from which
clients are connected. Closures protect the jointing points of cables between these
two network locations.

Distribution Solution for Buildings
Connections in buildings are the final stage in an FTTH network. Fibres

located at the base of a building are distributed and finally connected to
subscribers.
There are two types of architecture:

RFO NGII Optical Distribution Unit as Open Frame

Configuration
> Description
The RFO NG is the latest generation of an open frame ODF with cable head blocks,
tray modules for connectivity handling like splice and PLC splitter storage as well
as advanced patch cord management.
The new design is optimized for the latest trends in FTTH networks and suits
central office as well as POP applications.
The new cable head blocks are downwards compatible and can handle
alternatively all the tray modules from new or previous RFO generations. This
flexibility allows to utilize current inventories as well as the migration to the new
pre-connectorised tray modules.
It can be mounted easily and without specific tools.
This new design improves both, the fibre management in the modules as well as
the routing of the patch cords.

demand for 19” distribution panels. 3M has developed a range of swivelling
drawers 1, 2 and 3U fitting to 19“ standards for installations in outdoor street
cabinets or in POP stations (Point Of Presence)
This solution made of plastic allows to save 75% in weight compared to usual metal
drawers, which not only facilitates the handling of this product but also creates

designed to easily connect subscribers in the distribution network using ITU
G652.D or ITU.G657.A2 single-mode fibres.
Its compactness (volume less then 2 litres) means it can be used in any type of
chamber, even the smallest.
Its butt configuration facilitates the use in narrow chambers.
Its dual port and its 14 single ports cover all applications, depending on the
topography of the zone (residential, mixed or building).

ECAM Connect Drop Cables

The ECAM Connect is designed to provide SC / APC ruggedized connectivity
assembled on outdoor drop cables. Typically these are 3 to 6 mm Ø or flat or figure
8-type (FRP) cables. 3M pre-assembled drop cables use round cable with 5 mm Ø.
The connection is based on IEC standardized SC footprint. The housing which is
assembled around the connector protects the connector against environmental
impacts and can be plugged into any standard SC simplex coupling.
ECAM Connect
Aerial Pre-terminated ECAM Connect is designed for above and below grain drop connections to closures
Drop Cable with corresponding ECAM Connect ports. For an easy plug and play installation
ECAM Connect can be plugged into BPEO S0, BPEO S1 or BPEO S1,5 closures
without the need to open the closure. Standard SC couplings are pre-assembled
inside the closure (see picture). Unused ports are sealed with blind plugs. To install
a new client only remove the blind plug from the ECAM Connect port in the BPEO
closure and insert the ECAM Connect plug with assembled drop cable.
Drop cables are terminated on one side for alternative connection on the customer
premises and are available in different lengths. For BPEO closure types with ECAM
Connect, please refer to the corresponding Product Bulletins of BPEO S0 ECAM
Connect, BPEO S1 ECAM Connect or BPEO S1,5 ECAM Connect closures.

ECAM Connect SC/APC Field Mountable Kit

The 3M™ ECAM Connect SC housing is designed to protect an SC simplex
connector assembled on an outdoor drop cable. The ECAM Connect Kit contains
of a field mountable SC/APC NPC (No Polish Connector) for outdoor cables and
ECAM Connect fields mountable kit the housing which is assembled around the connector. It protects the connector
against environmental impacts and gives additional mechanical strength.
With its standardized SC/APC type front face the assembled ECAM Connect drop
cable can be inserted into a standard SC coupling. The embedded SC/APC NPC
connector accepts tube in tube cables with a diameter from 3 – 6 mm.
With the field mountable ECAM Connect Kit the length of cables can be exactly
adapted to the appropriate length in the field, thus requires no overlength storage
as with pre-connected drop cables.
ECAM Connect is designed for wall and pole mounted closures. ECAM Connect
can be plugged from outside into the ports of corresponding BPEO S0, S1 and S1,5
type closures, which have pre-assembled SC/APC standardized couplings inside
the closure. For an easy and safe plug and play installation. An opening of the
closure is not required. To install a new drop (customer) only the dust caps of the
closure port and on the ECAM Connect have to be removed to make the drop
connection.

4.2.2 PBPO/C Multipurpose Distribution Box pre-assembled
The PBPO/C NG Symmetric is a Building Branching Point Interface between the

riser cable and the customer drop cables. Application for mid span access cables
or window cut cables.
Application:
• The vertical cable passes and a branch out cable enters the distribution box through
one of the anchoring points which can be left and right of the coiling area.
• Coiling storage box of fibres coming out of a window cut microtube or loose tube
cable passing through or being spliced to pigtails for customer drop.

SC Simplex
The 8686 FTTH Wall Outlet is a universal access point for FTTH end user installation.
This outlet is designed to match with new generation of field mountable
connectors like 3M No Polish Connectors (NPC).
Field mountable connector termination in the 8686 outlet avoid installing a fiber
storage tray and splicing.
Alternatively, the splicing of pigtails and the storage of splices, either fusion
or 3M Fibrlok™ mechanical splices is designed into the concept.
On the wall cable entry is possible from either the sides or from the top of the outlet.
The 8686 outlet can be mounted on the wall or on underwall 60 mm boxes.
Up to 4 SC simplex couplings can be mounted if used with G.657.A bend
insensitive fibre.

4.5 3M™ Clear Track Fibre Pathway

The 3M™ Clear Track Fiber Pathway provides an aesthetic
pathway for indoor residential or office applications.
The pathway captures and routes a single 3M™ Clear Fiber 900 μm to the desired
outlet or terminal location, while remaining virtually invisible. 3M Clear Track Fiber
Pathway features a 3M proprietary adhesive backing material with an easy-peel
liner. Application involves no staples, no heat, no fluid adhesive or bulky raceways.
To install, simply remove the liner and apply the adhesive backed surface to a wall
near the ceiling or a baseboard.*
The 3M Clear Fiber 900 μm can be easily laid and captured within the Clear Track
with the 3M Clear Track Fiber Installation Tool. The flexible, continuous Clear
Track can be easily routed around corners as well as radiused or irregular surfaces.
The unique fiber restraints and conformable adhesive help capture and provide
durability to the fiber.
* The adhesive backing is meant to be for permanent bonding to the surface

4.6 3M™ Clear Drop Cable

3M™ Clear Fiber Drop Cable is a specially designed all dielectric cable for FTTH
use and is widely accepted in global markets. Due to the easy fiber access design,
this unique cable can be transitioned from outdoor to indoors without the need
for asplice or connection point.
A single 900 μm clear buffered ultra bend insensitive optical fiber is contained
within the jacketed fiber drop, which complies with ITU G657.B3 standard,
meeting the 5 mm bend radius requirement. Two parallel Fiber Reinforced Polymer
(FRP) strength members are placed on the two sides of the fiber in the cable.
Cable jacket dimensions are 2.5 x 4.0 mm.
When installing the cable indoors, the two sides of the cable are easily peeled
back exposing the 900 μm clear buffered fiber. The clear buffered fiber is then
inconspicuously routed to the homeowner’s network terminal or wall outlet.
The fiber can be easily terminated with 3M field-installable connectors.

The 3M™ Easy Cleaver is the latest cutting edge innovation from 3M. Unlike other
fiber cleavers, which can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars up-front, the
3M Easy Cleaver is conveniently included* with select packages of 3M™ No Polish
Connectors, 3M™ Crimplok™+ Connectors and 3M™ Fibrlok™ II Splices.
Compared to many other blade-enabled fiber cleaving tools, the 3M Easy Cleaver
requires virtually no maintenance because of its diamond wire cleaving mechanism.
The 3M Easy Cleaver is capable of repeatedly creating smooth end faces and is
designed to perform approximately 120 cleaves per tool. A handy counter helps
track the number of cleaves performed.
