Q: What should
I look for in a
wedding
photographer?
What’s most
important—style
or budget?
—Ash Costello via Facebook

A: Surveys* say the average cost for a wedding photographer is around $3,133 or Want to know
6 percent of your budget, but anyone looking at top-level work is in for a shock. For a when to splurge
weekend event, expect to pay a minimum day rate for eight hours of coverage. If your and when to
guest list is 200 and up, you may pay more or need a second photographer. So when save? Ask us all
your budget is tight, it’s best to cut your count or have your wedding on a Thursday, your burning
when photographers are more likely to negotiate. Any wedding planner will tell you budget questions
the same, because the cost of everything will scale down. Think quality versus quantity, @brides on
especially if you have your heart set on a specific person to capture your big day. Twitter, Facebook,
or Instagram.
Timing is also a factor: There is less flexibility on pricing during peak months (June,
September, and October) as well as on weekends, especially if you want to book far
in advance. Also, an engagement session or rehearsal dinner [1] costs extra ($1,000 to

SAMM BLAKE; ILLUSTRATIONS: KATE DONOVAN; *BRIDES AMERICAN WEDDING SURVEY, OCTOBER 2018
$3,000); for out-of-town events, factor in travel expenses [2], plus added day-rate fees.
Set your priorities: One bride wanted to pay $600 an hour for the late-night after-party;
my tip was to give Instax cameras [3] to guests, who will have a ball taking snaps of
each other.
A basic package includes a gallery of around 600 watermark-free photos sent in
high-resolution files and/or a USB drive. Delivery time is 6 to 10 weeks, and here’s
why: Some 5,000 digital photos from your wedding get downloaded, backed up, and
reviewed. That takes time. Those who opt for film [4] will get an online gallery of
images and often a box of print proofs as well. Know, too, that your wedding album [5]
costs extra; it’s easiest, but also more expensive, to order a leather heirloom version
from your photographer. (Here’s a thought: Register for that instead of a mixer!) For
you DIYers, why not create your own signature keepsake on Artifact Uprising?

For so many reasons,

this groom thought
he wouldn’t marry.
Then love changed
his mind.

never say never

This year, my fiancé, Mark Brendon Herman, and I are getting married at our
favorite place in the world: Harbour Island in the Bahamas. We have the whole weekend
planned, from taking our groomsmen out for dinner on Friday after the rehearsal to
surprising guests with a tuxedo-clad violinist playing Adele’s “Hello” when they step off
the boat for our ceremony at the Other Side resort on Eleuthera. We’ve made sure the
Sunday Funday pool party will have plenty of barbecue, burgers, Bloody Marys, and
chilled rosé for our loving family and friends. We even created a family crest! And being
the thoughtful, organized person he is, Mark has already written his vows.
I’ll write mine soon. I have a lot to say. Considering the last few years, when life-changing
events upended everything, those familiar words—“to have and to hold; from this day
forward; for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health; to love and
to cherish; till death do us part”—seem written just for us. Mark and I have already met
those challenges, having weathered so much together. But just thinking about what to say
has made me realize how far the world—and we as a couple—have come.
For one thing, I never really thought I would actually get married. I’m a bit older, so
when I started dating, marriage wasn’t an option for gay people. Frankly, I never even
thought about it. Then, on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex
marriage changed all that. Still, marriage was a foreign concept to me. I am an only child,
and my parents divorced when I was two. I had a very loving family with wonderful par-
ents whom I love, but mine was an untraditional upbringing and I would never change it
for the world! I’ve never had a family the way Mark does, with lots of time spent with
siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. It was mostly me and my mom, who
was also an only child; on the weekends, I’d take the Eastern shuttle from Boston to New
York City to see my dad, who teaches constitutional law at Columbia University.
So the idea of marriage or family left me feeling vulnerable. I remember meeting
Mark’s siblings at his brother’s wedding and, when I found out we were all staying
together, asking incredulously, “We’re sharing a house with everyone?!” Mark didn’t get

why I was so stressed out. It was one of the times in my life when I
felt like I didn’t have all the answers. Sweetly enough, his family
understood how uncomfortable I was and they have embraced me
for who I am. I’ve come to realize, happily, that “to have and to
hold” extends to family too.
“For richer, for poorer” also rings true. Recently, I was making a
big salary at a job where I was unhappy. Mark encouraged me to Monaghan (top)

leave, saying, “We’ll figure it out—your happiness is what is import-
ant!” I took the plunge. I’m an independent person, so sharing such
a life-altering decision was a first for me. It felt right.
The most difficult challenge we’ve met—and I’ll think about it when “in sickness and
in health” comes up—was a scary injury that happened six months after we got engaged
“When I
on a mountaintop in Italy: On a weekend in the Hamptons, I fell off a boat and ruptured proposed, I

and I mean basic. Not fun stuff—dressing me, emptying my pee jar, holding my back on

friend” because I was so sad. On the way to the physical therapist one morning, I mes- Book of Us,
saged Mark: “I’m dreading the thought of bending my knee, when she takes it out of recognizing
the brace and tries to get my range of motion back. I’m so sick of screaming and crying.”
Mark messaged back: “Just know I’m always holding your hand, even if I’m not physi- that if he said

Before we were together, the most important thing for me was my career; Mark prizes
family and work-life balance above everything. That’s as far apart as you can get, yet he

and me together, and I had always wanted one. For my 40th birthday, I rented out the
Boom Boom Room in Manhattan and asked guests to come in tuxedos and evening
gowns. I figured I would get the snapshot then, but hours before the event, my mother
broke her leg and couldn’t attend.
Fast-forward one year. Mark says, “For your birthday, be in a tux at seven. No questions.”
You can probably guess where he took me. I walked into the Boom Boom Room, and my
dad and mom were there, dressed to the nines. I was overwhelmed; I had never, ever
seen them together. It was such an emotional moment. Like me, my parents are chron-
ically early, so they had arrived way ahead of time and talked for two hours. They hadn’t
even seen each other in over 28 years. Orchestrating that reunion speaks to Mark’s char-
acter—the way he acknowledged my family issues and how respectful my parents were to
him. It broke the ice before the wedding (we got engaged three months later).
COURTESY OF THE COUPLE

Early in our relationship, I gave Mark The Book of Me, a do-it-yourself journal that helps
you write a memoir. Later, when I proposed, I handed him The Book of Us, recognizing
that if he said yes, we would be creating the ‘us’ that is a family. Mark looked at me and
said, “You really love me.” That was his validation—he knew marriage had never been
important to me, and that I was acknowledging its importance and giving myself com-
pletely to him—to love and to cherish, till death do us part. I do.

Surprise
When bride Adeline
started dress shopping,
she thought she wanted
a vintage tulle design.
Instead, she surprised
herself with a “timeless”
silk gown by Alberta
Ferretti. “Everyone is so

loud and daring stuff. I
liked the idea of wow-
ing people with a clas-

In music and in life, timing is everything. Case in point: When Paris-born singer and
songwriter Adeline first met event producer Sinclair Bolden at a party in 2008, their

her native country with Sinclair (“he likes to say he was French in a past life”). It was beautiful.”
The couple traveled to the French Riviera to scope out potential venues and made
a last-minute stop in Provence, where they fell in love with the Domaine des
Andéols, a hotel in the village of Saint-
Saturnin-lès-Apt. “The modern aes-
thetic and serene, natural environment
fit us perfectly,” she explains.
While the dreamy location brought
their vision to life, the couple made their
loved ones the real focus of their wed-
ding, with three days of events that
kicked off with a yacht party in Mar-
seille. “The most magical thing was
watching our friends becoming friends,”
says Adeline of the group vacation vibe.
On September 24, 2018, the bride (in
vintage Alberta Ferretti) and the groom
married in a bilingual ceremony at
golden hour, the time just before sun-
set. Afterward, guests enjoyed cocktails
in a palm grove before dinner at the
hotel’s restaurant situated under a
600-year-old plane tree. The setting
provided the ideal backdrop to the
most powerful—and unplanned—
moment of the night. “When the time
came to talk, I couldn’t; I was too over-
whelmed,” says Adeline, who found her
footing by singing Gladys Knight’s “Best
Thing That Ever Happened to Me” to
her husband. “I looked at him and he
looked at me and everything kind of
froze into a time bubble. That moment
is still living somewhere; it never
ended.” —Liana Schaffner

O
On Billions, Malin Akerman plays Lara Axelrod, the
fierce and formidable wife of a billionaire hedge fund
manager. But on December 1, 2018, she played every
part the boho bride, marrying actor Jack Donnelly in
a breezy fete that could not have been further from her
on-screen counterpart’s lifestyle. The couple—who
were friends for two years before they started dating—
opted for a seaside ceremony in Tulum, Mexico, full of
unique touches. “It was all about being authentic…not
adhering to somebody else’s standard of what a wed-
ding should be,” Malin says of the attitude that came
naturally to the duo. “We wanted the wedding to feel
real to us. It gave us a lot of freedom.”
Take, for instance, the bride’s gown in a romantic
blush hue, a color Malin felt drawn to for her second
wedding: “We all know I’m not a virgin, and since that’s
what white is meant to represent, I didn’t feel beholden
to that. I felt like having a bit of fun with colors!”
BLUE SKY The unconventional details didn’t stop there. Cock-

At the intimate reception, guests such as Carla
Gugino and Michelle Monaghan enjoyed a family-style
dinner of ceviche bandera and grilled octopus while LP
(singer Laura Pergolizzi) serenaded the newlyweds
with “Lost on You” for their first dance. The party con-
tinued in the palapa, fueled by British DJ Zen Freeman
and a round of tacos, tamales, and esquites.

Sometimes, bigger really is better. Just ask Tara Foley, who found
her dream dress at Oscar de la Renta—a gown with a voluminous
skirt that radiated, as she puts it, “cool princess” vibes. But to her
eye, the petticoat the salesperson suggested she wear with it lacked
adequate oomph. “I just thought it needed more,” she says with a
laugh. “I ended up wearing the biggest, fluffiest one they had. It was
a spectacle, but I loved it.”
As brand director for the modern lifestyle company Something
Navy, Tara is a pro at creating moments with visual impact, and she
relied on her fashionable instincts while planning her October 27,
2018, nuptials to investment banker Tyler Moni. “We liked the idea
of a warm-weather destination wedding in Palm Beach,” says Tara.
The New York couple were captivated by the grandeur of the Flagler
Museum, a winter retreat for railway magnate Henry Flagler dating
to 1902. “The spot has so much elegance and old-school glamour,

perfect for a black-tie event,” she says. The couple’s second cere-
mony—they officially married in New York City a week prior—was
held outside. “We were the first ones to marry on the front lawn,”
says Tara. “The setting was so dramatic.” Cocktail hour followed in
a glass-enclosed pavilion before the night’s festivities took place in
a columned space with 27-foot-tall ceilings. Still, the biggest crowd-
pleaser may have been the surprise performance by Tara’s dad, Wil-
liam Foley, who burst into a rollicking rendition of the party anthem
“Mony Mony.” (The song, understandably, is a favorite among the
Moni family.) “I had no idea he was going to do that,” says Tara. “It
was hilarious!” There was dancing and revelry until midnight, fol-
lowed by a cheeseburger-fueled after-party at a nearby hotel. And
in case you’re wondering, Tara did change, slipping into a sleek Alex
Perry column after dinner and again into a Brandon Maxwell mini
later that night. “I loved my dress so much, so I was sad to take it
off,” she says, “but it was hard to dance in!” —Catherine Hong

136 the moment

Cassie Dubé and her father, Duke Dubé

May 10, 2018, New York City

“My dad wanted to share a ride to the ceremony at a schooner docked on

the Hudson River, so just the two of us could have a little moment together
beforehand. He wanted to get a limo, but I loved the idea of taking a cab.
My fiancé, David Dilettoso, and I had envisioned the day of the wedding to
be simple and intimate, with the focus on people and experiences, so I didn’t
hire anyone to do flowers. I thought it would be fun to stop en route at a New
York City bodega to pick some up. So my dad bought me a bundle of peonies
(my favorite) on the way to marry my best friend.” —Cassie Dilettoso
