1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This document defines paint color and pipe marking requirements for an FPSO operating
offshore Brazil. The Brazilian Norma Regulamentadora 26 and 30 are the foundation of this
document. This document applies to the Shipyard, Topsides Fabrication Yard, Equipment
Suppliers, and others. The markings established by this document shall enable crew members
to quickly identify possible hazards in the vicinity of certain systems.

2.0 BACKGROUND
Petrobras and partners (henceforth the “Client”) are developing the "Carioca Wells" within
the concession areas related to the Santos Basin, off the coast of Brazil. The Client invited the
Schahin Group and MODEC International, Inc. (henceforth the “Company”) to tender FPSO
specifications for a VLCC conversion scenario with a minimum storage capacity of
1,600,000 bbl of crude oil. The Client specified that the FPSO shall be spread-moored in a
maximum water depth of 2,126 meters.
The FPSO is intended to receive production from subsea oil wells and shall have production
plant facilities to process the fluids from the subsea production, stabilize them, and separate
produced water and natural gas. Processed liquids shall be metered, stored in the vessel cargo
storage tanks, and offloaded to shuttle tankers.
High CO2 concentrate produced gas shall be compressed, dehydrated, and used as a fuel gas.
Surplus gas shall be injected into the reservoir. Low CO2 gas shall be imported for fuel gas
and gas lift use as well as combined with the high CO2 produced gas for reservoir injection.
Produced water shall be disposed of overboard after appropriate treatment.
The Process Plant shall have the following capacity:
• Production and treatment of 19,200 Sm3/day of liquids (at 15.6 ºC and 101.3 kPa (a)) and
up to 16,000 Sm3/d of crude oil (at 15.6 ºC and 101.3 kPa (a)) and 16,000 m³/d of
produced water.
• Treatment and compression of 5,000,000 Sm3/d of associated gas.
• Treated seawater injection capacity of 19,200 m3/d at 25,000 kPa (a).

3.0 BASIS
International regulations under which the offshore facility is built and operated require that a
uniform scheme be used to identify pipes and pipe systems containing hazardous fluids or
pressures. Moreover, the adoption of and adherence to a recognized industry practice for the
identification of potential hazards are important elements of the Company’s HSEQ strategy.
The Company’s standard 0003 “Topsides Paint Color Scheme and Pipe Marking
Specification,” 0381-MI20-00S1-0031, follows the ANSI / ASME A13.1 “Pipe Labeling
Requirements,” which does not consider Brazilian National Regulations. Therefore, this
document is for Brazilian offshore projects only, as it is specific to the locale.

6.0 MARKING SYSTEM

The indication in color, whenever necessary, especially when in an area of transit for people
alien to the Work, will be followed by the conventional signals or by the identification
through words representing marking.

6.1 STRIPING
Whenever a more detailed identification is required (concentration, temperature, pressure,
purity, etc.), the differentiation will be done by stripes of different colors applied over the
basic color.
Stripes shall be easily recognizable and viewable on all parts of the piping. The maximum
distance between color indicator stripes shall be 25 feet (8 meters). Color stripe width shall be
a minimum of 40% of the outside diameter of the pipe, but shall not to be less than 3 inches
(75 mm). For the pipe diameter less than 3 inches (75 mm), the width may be equal to the
outside diameter.
The color yellow can be combined with the color black to obtain a greater contrast. Black
stripes (verticals or diagonals) and black squares will be used over yellow when a better
visibility for the signaling is required.

6.2 LABELS
The legend labels and color indicator bands should be provided at suitable locations along the
length of each pipe branch line, so that they can be easily seen and read by Operators and
Technicians. The legend should be close to valves or flanges and adjacent to changes in
direction, branches, and where pipes pass through walls or floors, unless this shall result in
excessive and/or ambiguous labeling. The Company permits practical variations in this case.
For example, the placement of the legend in the middle of the visible length of pipe may be
more in keeping with the purpose of pipe marking. Expert professional safe-practice shall
always be observed in any variation.

6.2.1 Preventive Labeling

Dangerous or hazardous products shall be labeled accordingly. All instructions shown on
labels shall be brief, precise, and written in simple and easily understandable language. The
language shall be practical, not based only on specific product properties, but used in a way
to avoid risks resulting from the use, handling, and storage of product. Where there is a
possibility of mixing 2 or more chemical products with properties different in type or degree
from the individual ones, the label shall highlight the hazardous properties of the final
product.
The following items shall be included on the labels:
• Technical Denomination of product
• Warning Word on the risk degree
• Risk Indications
• Preventive Measures including the ones that shall be in place
• First Aid

• Medical Information in case of accident

• Special Instructions for fire, leakage or spillage, if applicable
Technical Denomination
Note that the complete technical denomination, specifying nature of chemical product, i.e.
“Corrosive Acid,” “Lead Based Product,” etc., shall be identified on the label. In any
situation, the identification shall be such that the correct medical treatment can be chosen in
case of accident.
Warning Words
The following warning words shall be used:
• "PERIGO / DANGER” for substances presenting high risk
• "CUIDADO / CAUTION" for substances presenting mild risks
• "ATENÇÃO / ATTENTION" for substances presenting low risk
Risk Indication
Indications shall inform about the risks related to normal or reasonably expected handling of
the product.
Examples: "EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE" or "HARMFUL IF ABSORBED THROUGH
THE SKIN"
Preventative Measures
Used to establish other measures to be taken to avoid harm or damages due to the indicated
risks.
Example: “KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT, SPARKS, OR FLAMES” and “AVOID
INHALING THE DUST”
First Aid
Should define specific measures to be taken before medical assistance is available.
The size, style, and color of the letters and symbols should follow the ASNI / ASME 13.1
specifications for lettering and should be applied without variation as far as practicable.
Refer to Section 6.7 for the recommended length of color field and size of legend letters in
accordance with ASME A13.1.

6.3 PIPE LEGEND

The legend shall be marked with the indication of flow direction. Additional details can be
added to the legend at the Operators’ discretion. Such additions may include the line size,
line number, and pressure rating.
The direction of fluid flow under normal conditions shall be indicated by arrows stenciled
adjacent to the legend in the same coloring as the legend. Where normal fluid flow may be
bidirectional, such as on crossover lines, the flow direction shall be indicated with double-
headed arrows.

6.4 MARKING FOR NON-INSULATED PIPING

Firewater lines and other fire suppression fluid lines (e.g. CO2 and FM200) shall be painted
with red (RAL 3020) along the entire length of the pipe according to Brazilian regulation
NR-26 “Color Code for Safety”.
All other lines shall be painted along the entire length.

6.5 MARKING FOR INSULATED PIPING

Insulated lines shall be identified by color stripes taped to distinguish the system.
The color is used to paint or affix a colored tape to the pipe at intervals along its length that
are convenient to see from any area in which personnel circulate or may be found performing
routine tasks.
Maximum distance between color indicator stripe to be 8 meters.
Color stripe width to be minimum 40% of the outside diameter of the pipe, but not to be less
than 3 inches. For the pipe diameter less than 3inches, the width may be equal to the outside
diameter.
