Advantages of Using the REDAS
Android EDM
• Android devices are low cost, highly portable and easy
to use survey tool
• Photos of buildings can be conveniently taken using the
built-in camera
• Filenames of Photos of buildings are automatically
uploaded to SQLite table and linked with
corresponding building attributes
• Locations of buildings can be conveniently obtained
using the built-in GPS and Magnetic Compass and
automatically uploaded to the SQLite table
• Buildings can be conveniently described on site using
the drop-down menu of building attributes
Installation
• The APK installer (EDM100.apk) is provided together with the third party
applications APK files in the REDAS Installation CDs.
• Copy the Android EDM Installer folder into your PC drive.
• Connect your android device to the PC using a micro USB cable that came
with your device and copy the Installer Folder into the external Sdcard of
the device.
• By using the File Manager tool of the Android device, open the copied
Installer Folder and click on the EDM100.apk file to install EDM. Do the
same to install the third party applications.
• After installation, open the Applications window and locate and click on
the EDM icon to run it. During the first run, you will be prompted to enter
your UNIT_ID. PHIVOLCS is maintaining a database of users of the tool in
order to facilitate coordination and provide for easy consolidation of the
gathered data in the future. Kindly request by email a valid UNIT_ID from
the PHIVOLCS REDAS Team (leyobautista@yahoo.com). Include your
complete name, address and contact number in your email request.
• After entering a valid UNIT_ID, the tool will provide you an option to open
the Main Menu. Click on the DATABASE Menu and then click DATA APPEND
to initialize the database.

Method for Obtaining Locations of
Buildings
• Estimate the distance of the building from the
observer using camera (Third Party Applications).
• Get observers position using GPS.
• Get Azimuth of buildings from observers position
using magnetic compass.
• You will be prompted to enter the estimated
distance from the building.
• The tool will automatically calculate the building
location using the observer’s location, measured
azimuth and estimated distance to the building.
How to estimate building locations
X = (Blidg_Dist + Z) * Sin(Azimuth)
Building
Location Y = (Bldg_Dist + Z) * Cos(Azimuth)
N AZIMUTH
Convert X and Y in decimal degrees
X
Bldg_Longitude = Obs_Longitude + X
Bldg_Latitude = Obs_Latitude + Y
Y Z
X and Y are expressed in decimal degrees

– SMART DISTANCE
– SMART MEASURE
• Range Finder
• Tape Measure
• By pacing
pace factor = distance / No. Steps
Distance = No. Steps * pace factor
How to estimate distance using inclinometer
and Camera (SMART MEASURE)

H = height of camera (eye level of observer) Z

tan(Theta)=H / X
X = H / tan(Theta)

Bldg_Dist = X + Z

How to use SMART MEASURE
• Click H button and enter the camera height or
eye level height of observer as shown in A.

A • To check calibration, measure by pointing the

cross-hair at the foot of an object with known
distance as shown in B.
• If measured distance is far from the actual
value, calibrate by pressing Manual
Calibration Button. This will pop up
calibration screen as shown in C.
• Adjust the percentage and measure again. Do
this repeatedly by trial and error until you get
a result close to the actual distance.

• If the tool will be used by another observer

with a different eye level height, you need to
enter again his eye level height and repeat
calibration.

C
How to estimate distance using Camera (SMART
DISTANCE)
* This range-finder measures the distance
to a target by the camera perspective. The Z
effective distance is 10m-1km. To measure
the distance, you should know the height of
a target.
* You need to check the calibration of your
device using a target with known height
and distance.

How to use SMART DISTANCE

A B

• Calibrate the tool by using a target with

known height and distance.
• Enter the height of the target by clicking H.
This will pop up screen B. C
• Fit the target inside the two green horizontal
lines to measure the distance as shown in A.
• If the obtained distance is far from the
correct distance, adjust calibration by clicking
MENU then Settings and then Height
Calibration. This will pop up screen C.
• Adjust the slider and measure again. Do this
by trial and error until a measurement close
to the actual distance is obtained.
Compatibility of Android EDM database table
with that of Windows PC EDM is maintained
• All Attributes and number of columns are the
same for both tools
• As of this writing, only 50 of the 100 building
attributes are implemented in the ANDROID tool.
The attributes that are not used are given null
values in the table.
• Android EDM can export table as CSV file
• CSV file can be read by PC Windows EDM
• The ANDROID EDM can then serve as data
collection tool and Windows PC EDM can serve as
data integrator.
Check the magnetic alignment of your device
From the observer’s
The device when aligned to the position, the azimuth
North Direction (the top side of building is obtained
pointed to the North) should give by pointing the top of
an azimuth reading close to 0 or the device towards
360 degrees. the direction of the
building

Please be reminded that putting your device close to

magnetic materials may affect the calibration and
readings of your compass. If the compass is giving erratic
readings, you may recalibrate it by holding it in one hand
and rotating it with a motion following an 8 path.

How to transfer the CSV table to the PC

• The Data_ID folder is transferred to the Windows PC EDM

(c:\Redas\exposure_databse\Building_Database\Province\town\Photos)
• The CSV file from the Android Tool is integrated into the Windows PC table
by using the Data Import Button.
