Bencab, who was born in Malabon, has christened the emblematic scavenger figure “Sabel.” For Bencab, Sabel is a
melancholic symbol of dislocation, despair and isolation–the personification of human dignity threatened by life’s
vicissitudes, and the vast inequities of Philippine society.*

“Sabel” is a major subject that recurs through BenCab’s works through the decades, inspired by a real-life scavenger,
he photographed and sketched in 1965, the Sabel image has become the artists vehicle for the transmission of
intensely emotional moods. When pushed to the limits of abstraction, the Sabel image serves as a fertile ground for
the investigation of shape and structure.

One day when he was in his apartment room in Bambang, Sta. Cruz, Manila, he saw a bedraggled scavenger
wandering the street who was wearing scraps of plastic. Cabrera, who was then working as an illustrator and layout
artist for a magazine, took this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and drew abstract sketches of the woman. According to
him, the woman who he named as “Sabel” is a representation of not just a homeless woman but of any Filipina as
well. “Looking at the way she moved, how her ‘clothes’ swayed, she could be an OFW, a vendor, a dreamer.”
Moreover, the artist could see in the alluring image a certain fashion sense and surreal dance movements that
inspired his later works.
