Pak named its retaliatory action against India on February 27 as ‘Operation Swift Retort’
The Pakistan Air Force announced that they will observe its retaliatory action against India on
February 27 against the Balakot strike of Indian Air Force as ‘Operation Swift Retort’. The Indian
air strikes at Balakot terror camp on February 26 was response of Pakistan based Jaish-e-
Mohammed (JeM) attack by a suicide bomber in Pulwama that killed 40 CRPF jawans.
Indo-French navies will hold their joint exercise off the Goa-coat from 1st May to 10th May, 2019
India and France will be holding their 17th edition of the Indo-French naval exercise, Varuna 19.1
Arabian Sea off the Goa coast from 1st May to 10th May, 2019. The 2nd part of the naval exercise,
Varuna 19.2, will be held at May-end in Djibouti.
UNSC Designated Jaish-E-Mohammed Leader Masood Azhar As A Global Terrorist
The 1267 Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
designated Pakistan based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) leader Masood Azhar as a
‘global terrorist’ on May 1, 2019. This could be possible because China has lifted its technical hold
on the proposal to blacklist Masood Azhar. This move was the response of deadly terror attack in
Pulwama by Pakistan based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) which killed 40 Central
Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans.
The UK Parliament becomes the first national government to pass an Environment and Climate
Emergency
This move marks a serious emergency in dealing with climate change. The declaration was
preceded by a visit by teenage activist Greta Thunberg (to the Parliament), the feature of David
Attenborough’s documentary movie titled ‘Climate Change: The Facts’ and the 11-days of constant
protest by an environmental group ‘Extinction Rebellion‘.
The 16th Ministerial Meeting of Asia Cooperation Dialogue held in Doha, Qatar with the theme
‘Partners in Progress’
Asia Cooperation Dialogue’s (ACD) 16th Ministerial Meeting was held in Doha, Qatar. Deputy
Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani
headed the 2019 dialogue. The Indian delegation was led by Gen. (Dr) V.K. Singh (Retd), Minister
of State for External Affairs.
India-Australia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism
The 11th meeting of the joint working group on counter-terrorism between India and Australia
held at Canberra, Australia on May 2, 2019. Mahaveer Singhvi, Joint Secretary (Counter-
Terrorism) led Indian delegation while Paul Foley, Australia’s Ambassador for Counter Terrorism
led Australian delegation for the meeting.
GReVD: SIPRI launches Global Registry of Violent Deaths
Stockholm International peace research institute (SIPRI) has launched a new initiative named
Global Registry of Violent Deaths (GReVD) to establish the annual number of violent deaths
worldwide.GReVD will count deaths caused by all forms of violence and display these in an open-
source database and enable monitoring of progress on the world’s commitment to ‘significantly
reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere’ by 2030 as set out in the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—Goal 16.
Nirmala Sitharaman reached Kyrgyzstan Defence Ministers’ Meet and held bilateral meetings
Nirmala Sitharaman, the current Defence Minister of India held a bilateral meeting with General
Wei Fenghe, Honourable Defence Minister of China, in which they discussed regional and bilateral
security issues. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

Senegal’s lawmakers gives the approval of the removal of the prime minister’s position
In the very first initiative of President Macky Sall’s 2nd term in office, Senegalese parliament has
approved a constitutional reform to remove the post of prime minister. Mahammed Boun
Abdallah Dionne served as the Prime Minister of Senegal since 6th July, 2014. He is the 3rd prime
minister appointed by President Macky Sall. Dionne was preceded by Aminata Toure.
Mali’s President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta named a new government after the Ogossagou Massacre
Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, Mali’s president named a new government comprising of 37 members to
oversee the formation of a “broad-based” government, under Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, after
his predecessor Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga resigned in April amid the Ogossagou massacre.

RBI directs banks to enhance housing loan limits for eligibility under priority sector lending
To include the RRBs (Regional Rural Banks) and SFBs (Small Finance Banks) in the same level as
the other Scheduled Commercial Banks, RBI has notified them to enhance housing loan limits to
individuals up to Rs 35 lakh in metropolitan centres (which would have a population of over 10
lakhs) and Rs 25 lakh in other centres, under Priority sector Lending (PSL).

According to Takehiko Nakao, President and Chairperson of Asian Development Bank, the Asia-

growth. ADB’s Asian Development Outlook 2019 report released in April states that developing
Asia comprising of 45 countries is estimated to grow by 5.7% in 2019
Vodafone Idea collaborates with IBM and signs a multi-million dollar IT deal
Vodafone Idea Ltd, India’s largest telecom operator notified a 5-year multi-million-dollar IT
outsourcing deal with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation). The collaboration will
contribute to Vodafone Idea’s merger synergy objectives by decreasing its IT related costs.
Income tax e-filers drop by over 6.6 lakh in 2018-19
According to Income Tax Department’s e-filling website, income tax e-filings in 2018-19 have
dropped by over 6.6 lakh. In 2017-18 the income tax e-filings was 6.74 crore and in 2018-19 it
was 6.68 crore, decrement of 6.6 lakh. According to the data, registered filers have grown by 15%
to 8.45 crore as on March 31, 2019.
Anti-dumping duty of 1,633.17 $ per tonne imposed on saccharin imports from Indonesia
Based on the recommendation of the Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry in March
2019, the revenue department under the Ministry of Finance has imposed anti-dumping duty of
1,633.17 $ per tonne on saccharin imports from Indonesia. This duty, unless withdrawn earlier,
will be valid for a period of 5 years.
Direct tax collections fall short of Rs 82,000 crore in 2018-19 due to shortage in corporate tax
collections
Direct tax collections fell short by Rs. 82,000 crore at 11.18 crore in FY2019 (financial year), and
one of the major reasons for this shortage is low corporate tax collections. The collections from
some regions were much lesser than the last year. Rs.12 lakh crore was the target set by the
government. But the sum total of the tax collection numbers indicate that it got 13.4% more than
the previous fiscal year but fell short of the updated target of 18%.
Foreign exchange reserves of India rose by USD 4.368 billion
According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, India’s foreign exchange has risen by USD 4.368
billion. Now the foreign exchange of India is USD 418.515 billion. The foreign currency assets has
risen by USD 4.387 billion to USD 390.421 billion and the gold reserves has remained unchanged
at USD 23.303 billion.

Recently, Microsoft has released its own fully managed Azure Blockchain Service. This will help in
simplifying the formation, management and governance of the businesses so that they can pay
attention to workflow logic and application development. Businesses can develop their
applications on this new cloud-based platform.
India’s MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) tourism growing at 8% a year
The report titled “India Inbound Tourism: Unlocking the Opportunity” published that India’s MICE
(meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition) tourism are growing at 8 percent a year. The
report is published by the Federation of Indian Chambers & Industry (FICCI) in collaboration with
Yes Bank. India has ranked 24th in MICE tourism worldwide and 5th in the Asia Pacific region.

schools in India
GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assesment) Council has launched "GRIHA for Existing
Day Schools" in India, to comply with the nation's vision for a greener and sustainable future. It is

Ministry of Defence approved Indian Navy’s Rs 3,600 crore deal for 10 ‘Kamov Ka-31’ Helicopters
Ministry of Defence gave approval to Indian Navy to acquire 10 ‘Kamov Ka-31’ Airborne Early
Warning and Control Helicopter for a deal worth of Rs 3,600 crore from Russia. These 10
helicopters would be deployed on the aircraft carriers and warships of the Indian Navy including
the INS Vikrant and Grigorovich-class frigates. The Kamov Ka-31 helicopters will strengthen the
capability of Indian Navy against aerial threats to its aircraft carriers and large warships.

After 36 years of service, Indian Navy's frontline missile destroyer, INS Ranjit has been
decommissioned at the naval dockyard in Visakhapatnam. INS Ranjit was commissioned on 15th
September 1983 with Captain Vishnu Bhagwat as the chair. INS Ranjit was the 3rd of the 5
Kashin-class destroyers built by the former USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). INS
Ranjit's motto was 'Sada Rane Jayate' or 'Ever Victorious in Battle'.
The US Air Force tested a laser system to shoot down multiple air launched missiles
The US Air Force Research Laboratory tested a laser system called ‘Self-Protect High Energy Laser
Demonstrator (SHiELD) at the US Army’s White Sands Missile range in New Mexico which
successfully shot down multiple air-launched missiles while in flight. The system is designed for
the purpose of protecting the aircrafts from incoming surface-to-air and air-to-air launched
missiles.
INS Vela: Indian Navy’s 4th Scorpene-class made in India submarine launched
INS Vela, Indian Navy's 4th Scorpene-class submarine was launched at Mazagon Dockyard in
Mumbai. This is the fourth submarine in the series of six submarines under Project 75 built by
Mazagon Dock Ltd, Mumbai. The Scorpene-class submarine has been termed as the Kalavari Class.
NASA’s first Planetary Defence Technology to collide with small moonlet in 2022
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will hit an asteroid named Didymoon
or Didymos B with a spacecraft called Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) in 2022. This will
be the first mission which demonstrates a planetary defence technique. The asteroid is 150 m tall
which orbiting a larger body called Didymos A. This will help in understanding the state of the
asteroid system.
Approval from NOTTO required for organ allocation to foreign nationals
The National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), an apex body that coordinates
with States on the procurement and distribution of organs in compliance with the Transplantation
of Human Organs Act (THOA), has issued guidelines according to which an organ could be
allocated to foreigners only after it gives its approval.

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk won PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award
The 27-year old Liverpool defender and captain of the Netherland National team, Virgil Van Dijk
won the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year Award for 2018-
19 after a sterling Premier League campaign. Van Dijk had joined Liverpool from Southampton in
January 2018 for a fee of £75million (Euro 75 million).
Apurvi Chandela achieves World No. 1 ISSF Rankings in 10m Air Rifle
According to the latest rankings released by International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), world
cup gold medallist, Apurvi Chandela became the world number one in women’s 10m Air Rifle
category with 1,926 rating points. The 26-year old Apurvi Chandela is among the five Indian
shooters who have earned the Olympic quota for the Tokyo 2020.
Bajrang Punia won gold at Ali Aliev Tournament 2019
A 25-year old, Bajrang Punia won a gold medal at Ali Aliev Tournament, held at Kaspiysk in
Dagestan, Russia. He defeated Russian wrestler Viktor Rassadin in 65-kg category by 13-8. This
was his second gold medal in the last 10 days. Last week, Punia won a gold medal in the 65-kg
category at the Asian Championship in Xi’an, China.

Yeti’ footprints sighted claims Indian Army tweet
The official Twitter account of the Indian Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public
Information tweeted that an Indian Army mountaineering expedition team has sited mysterious
footprints of mythical himalayan beast “Yeti” measuring 32×15 inches (81 centimeters by 38
centimeters) close to Makalu Base Camp,located in North-Eastern Himalayas on 09 April 2019.
Country’s biggest stucco figurine unearthed in Telangana’s Phanigiri
Indian archaeologists recently unearthed a life-sized stucco sculpture from a Buddhist site at
Phanigiri in Suryapet, Telangana. As per heritage department officials it represents one of
Bhodhisattva in JathakaChakra.This is the largest stucco sculpture found from India till date. It is
considered to have been built at at peak of Ikshavaku dynasty.
Bajirao, the last captive white tiger at Mumbai’s national park, dies at 18
The last captive white tiger at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali, Mumbai named
Bajirao died due to old age related problems at the age of 18. He was born at the SGNP in
2001 to tigress Renuka and tiger Sidharth. He suffered from chronic ankylosis on left shoulder
and chronic senile generalised arthritis for the last four years.
UN report termed ‘Global Assessment’ notifies that 40% of amphibian species and 1 million of
insect and fauna are threatened
The UN Report termed as ‘Global Assessment’, stated that, among the approximated 8 million
plant, insect and animal species, around 1 million is at risk of extinction within decades due to
human activity. The report was endorsed by 130 countries, including the U.S., Russia and China.
The research study was launched in Paris by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

US Judge and Civil Rights Icon Damon J. Keith died aged 96
United States Sixth Circuit Judge, Damon Jerome Keith, a grandson of slaves passed away at the
age of 96 in Detroit, the city where the prominent lawyer was appointed in 1967 to the US District
Court. He was born on 4 July 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in Star Wars passed away at 74 in North Texas
Actor Peter Mayhew, well known for portraying Chewbacca the Wookiee in the Star Wars films,
has died at the age of 74 at his home in North Texas, U.S. He was born on 19 May 1944 in Barnes,
London.
CPM leader and former finance minister, V Viswanatha Menon passed away at 92 in Kochi
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former finance minister, V Viswanatha
Menon Passed away at the age of 92 in Kochi, Kerala. He was popularly known as "Ambadi
Viswam". He was born in Ernakulam, Kerala.i. He served as the Finance Minister in 1987 during
the Left Democratic Front government led by E.K. Nayanar.
Former Chief Justice of Madras and Kerala High Courts, Justice Subhashan Reddy passed away
Former Chief Justice of Madras and Kerala High Courts, Justice Subhashan Reddy died at the age of
76 in Gachibowli due to age-related ailments. He was born at Amberpet in Hyderabad, Telangana
in 1943. After his retirement, he served as the chairperson on the AP State Human Rights
Commission and acted as the Andhra Pradesh Lokayukta in 2012.
Former Windies batsman Seymour Nurse passes away aged 85
Former West Indies Batsman Seymour Nurse died after prolonged illness at the age of 85. He was
born on 10 November 1933 at Saint Michael, Barbados. Nurse has played 29 Tests between 1960
and 1969.
Former billiards player Derek Sippy Passed Away
Former Indian Cue sports Player, Coach and administrator Derek Sippy, who was in his 60s, died
due to a massive heart attack in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His death was confirmed to Press Trust of
India (PTI) by Manav Panchal, Honorary Secretary of the Billiards and Snooker Association of
Maharashtra (BSAM).

International Labour Day is observed on May 1
International Labour Day or Workers day is observed annually on 1 May.It is also known as May
Day. The day was promoted by the international labour movement, socialists and communists.
The theme of International Labour Day 2019 was “Sustainable Pension for all: The Role of Social
Partners”.
May 2 observed as a World Tuna Day 2019
World Tuna Day was observed on May 2 worldwide to highlight the importance of tuna fish and to
promote more sustainable fishing practices which will help in achieving the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development. In December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
officially recognized May 2 as a World Tuna Day in its resolution 71/124. After the resolution has
passed, the day was first observed on May 2, 2017.
World Password Day celebrated on the 1st Thursday of May every year
The Registrar of National Day Calendar has designated the first Thursday of the month of May of
each year as World Password Day. This day is celebrated to promote better password habits for
digital protection for online shopping, dating, banking, social media, private work, and life
communications.
World Press Freedom Day observed on May 3
World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3 to raise awareness among the
international community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental
human rights. This year marked the 26th celebration of World Press Freedom Day which was
observed with a theme “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of
Disinformation”.
May 3 observed as a National Space Day 2019
National Space Day is observed on the first Friday of May every year. This year first Friday of May
coincide with May 3, so science community celebrates this day to promote Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in young people and to inspire them to pursue a
carrier in space-related jobs.

is to raise awareness about laughter and its many healing benefits.

On 4th May 2019, International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) was observed to recognize and honor the
sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as
possible. The symbol for International Firefighters Day is a red and blue ribbon. The color red
signifies fire and the blue denotes water. These colors also signify emergency services around the
world.
Coal Miners Day observed on May 4
On 4th May 2019, Coal Miners Day was observed to highlight the toughest profession and the
people working in coal mines. Several communities raise awareness and funds on this day for
other organizations in the coal mining area and workers. The annual celebration of Coal Miners
Day began in 1975.
May 5th observed as International Day of the Midwife
International Midwives Day 2019 is celebrated on May 5th every year. The theme for this year’s
celebration is “Midwives: Defenders of Women’s Rights“. The main event was hosted by WHO
Chief Nursing Officer and Taskforce on Nursing and Midwifery, which also saw the launch of the
original play “Born in the Ruins”.

Gujarat celebrates its foundation day on 1st May
Today is the 60th Foundation Day of Gujarat. Every year, 1st May is celebrated in different
districts of Gujarat by launching various welfare schemes. This year, there is no official
celebration due to the model code of conduct (MCC). The state of Gujarat came into existence on
1st May 1960 after division of Mumbai state.
Maharashtra Day is observed on 1st May to commemorate the statehood status of Maratha
speaking region
Maharashtra Day is celebrated every year on 1st May to mark the Maratha speaking region that
was founded on 1st May 1960. The state was formed under Bombay Reorganization Act in 1960.
This year, the state government of Maharashtra organized the main function in Mumbai and
celebrated this red-letter day at Shivaji Park, central Mumbai.
Master Hirannaiah, veteran Kannada actor and political satirist, dies at 85
Veteran Kannada cinema, theatre actor as well as political satirist, Master Hirannaiah died in
Bengaluru at the age of 85 due to liver ailments. He was born as Narasimha Murthy in Mysuru.
Mangaluru police gets an all-women patrol unit “Rani Abbakka Force”
Mangaluru Police Commissioner SandeepPatil flagged off the all-women police patrol unit named
‘Rani Abbakka Force’ in the city to handle issues pertaining to Women and Children. The Force
has been named after the 16th-century warrior of coastal Karnataka, Queen Abbakka of Ullal near
Mangaluru, who fought the Portuguese in the 16th century.

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Kerala High Court judge, Justice Parappillil
Ramakrishnan Nair Ramachandra Menon (P.R. Ramachandra Menon) as Chief Justice Of
Chhattisgarh High Court while exercising his powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the
Constitution of India. At the same time, Bombay High Court judge Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka
elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and Justice Shripathi Ravindra, a judge of
the Delhi High Court was named as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
BSNL launches ‘Bharat fibre’ for high speed broadband Internet service with local channel
partner in Pulwama
With the launch of ‘Bharat Fibre’, the state-owned telecom firm, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam
Limited) became the 1st operator to start optical fibre-based high-speed broadband service in

Pulwama. The Bharat Fibre services with reliable and high-speed internet are provided on the
optical fibre by FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) service up to the customer premises.
Arakkal Sultan Adiraja Fathima Muthu Beevi, head of Muslim royal dynasty passes away
Adiraja Sultana Fathima Muthu Beevi, the head of erstwhile Arakkal royal family, passed away at
her house ‘Isalil’ in Thalassery, Kerala due to age-related ailments. She was 86. She was the wife of
late C P KunjahammedIlaya. On June 26, 2018, Fathima Muthu Beevi took over the charge as 39th
head of the dynasty

Prominent writer and academician, Maramraju Satyanarayana Rao died due to cardiac arrest in
Hyderabad. He was 84. He was born at Jayyaram village in Mahabubabad district, Telangana.
Veteran CPI leader and former MP Duti Krushna Panda died at 97
Former Lok Sabha member and Veteran CPI leader Duti Krushna Panda passed away due to old
age-related ailments in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He was 97. He was elected to the state assembly
from Aska seat in 1990.
New Act passed by Gujarat Assembly which allowed Shops & Businesses to remain open 24×7
‘Gujarat Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act,
2019’ passed by Gujarat Assembly which came into force from May 1, 2019. The Act will allow the
shops and other businesses in the state to operate 24×7. The Act was passed by Gujarat Assembly
earlier in February, 2019. The Act replaced the Gujarat Shops and Establishments Act, 1948 which
prevented shops and other businesses from operating between 12 to 6 a.m.
Order of St George Award 2019 presented to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Indian spiritual leader, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, was presented with the ‘Order of St. George’ Award
for the year 2019 as part of the Commemorative Feast at the Puthuppally St. George Orthodox
Church (462-year-old) in Kottayam, Kerala. In 1981, Sri Sri founded the Art of Living Foundation,
a volunteer-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) providing social support to the people.
Karnataka Government limits the weight of school bags not more than 10% of the child’s weight
Karnataka government issued a circular, following the order of the Union Ministry of Human
Resource Development, directing all schools in the state, including government, aided and
unaided institutions, to limit the weight of a schoolbag which is not more than 10% of the child’s
weight. The third Saturday of every month should be followed as “No School Bag Day”.
The voice of Kerala’s Mappila songs, Eranholi Moosa passes away
Veteran singer, Eranholi Moosa died at the age of 75 at his residence at Gopalpet in Thalassery in
Kerala’s Kannur district. He was undergoing treatment for pulmonary diseases for quite some
time. He has served as the vice-chairman of the Folklore Academy.
