MoEFCC constituted a committee to implement National Clean Air Program


Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has constituted a committee to
implement the National Clean Air Program (NCAP). The objective is to reduce the PM (particulate
matter) 2.5 and PM 10 concentration by 20% to 30% in at least 102 cities by 2024. The committee
will be headed by the Secretary, Union Environment Ministry. The headquarters of the committee
will be in New Delhi.
Geological Survey of India (GSI) North Eastern Region (NER) installed 2 Geological Display Boards
at Mawmluh cave, Therriaghat
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) North Eastern Region (NER) installed 2 geological display
boards at 2 important geological sites with geo-scientific information. The sites are Mawmluh
cave and Therriaghat cave at Sobhar in East Khasi Hill District in Meghalaya.
Cyclone Fani hits Odisha and West Bengal
Cyclone Fani with a maximum wind speed of 240-250 kmph, is one of the most biggest and
fiercest cyclonic storm over the east coast in nearly two decades. Several villages nearby Puri in
Odisha have submerged due to heavy rains and till now at least 3 people have lost their life.
Central government has released Rs 1086 crore advanced financial assistance to four states for
undertaking preventive and relief measures to deal with cyclone ‘Fani’.
Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) and IIT-Delhi inked MoU to launch Centre of Excellence for
Waste to Wealth Technologies
Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India and Indian Institute of Technology
Delhi (IIT Delhi) have inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up a Centre of
Excellence for Waste to Wealth Technologies in India as a commemoration of 150th birth
anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2 October 2019. The project has been approved under the
recently constituted Prime Minister’s Science Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-
STIAC).

The 14th edition of Sino-Indian border trade opens at Nathu La in Sikkim


The 14th edition of the annual Sino-Indian border trade opens at Nathu La, which is the frontier
post at Sino-Indian border in Sikkim. Every year, between 1st May to 30th November, the bilateral
border trade between 2 nations is held for 4 days a week for 6 months.
Govt has mandated Green Number plates on all electric vehicles in India
The Central government has instructed all state transport departments to mandate green number
plates on all types of electric vehicles, whether brand new or used. The reason behind this move is
to distinguish green vehicles for preferential treatment in parking, free entry in congested zones,
and concessional toll.
Indian Postal Department released Postage Stamp to commemorate 750th Birth Anniversary of
Sri Vedanta Desika
In order to commemorate the 750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desikan, Vice President, M.
Venkaiah Naidu unveiled a postage stamp in New Delhi on May 2, 2019. The stamp has been
released by Indian postal department. Born in 1268 CE, he was Sri Vaishnava philosopher and one
of the most brilliant stalwarts of Sri Vaishnavism in the post-Ramanuja period.
IIT Kanpur collaborates with CSC e-Governance Services India to scale-up ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’
scheme
A Special Purpose Vehicle under the Ministry of Electronics & IT, (Information Technology) CSC
(Common Services Centre) e-Governance Services India Limited, has partnered with the Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT)Kanpur to upscale ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’. ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan
project’ is being led by Dr. Reeta Singh, from IIT Kanpur.
FAME-II plan stands to reduce 64% energy needs and 37% carbon needs by 2030: CII
The Confederation of Indian Industry(CII) has notified certain observations regarding second
phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacture of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME
India). It has observed that India can save 64% of anticipated road-based mobility-related energy
demand and 37% of carbon emissions by 2030. This will boost the India’s vision of reducing oil
imports by 10% by 2022.
IBSA Sherpas meet concluded in Cochin
India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) Sherpas meeting was held in Cochin, Kerala from May 3 to
May 5, 2019. Before IBSA Sherpas meeting, the 9th IBSA trilateral Ministerial Meeting was also
concluded at the same venue. Indian delegation was led by T.S. Tirumurti, Secretary (Economic
Relations) in Ministry of External Affairs and Amb. Norberto Moretti, Sherpa of Brazil and Prof.
Anil Sooklal, Sherpa of South Africa led their respective delegation at the meeting.
KVIC distributed 1 lakh bee-boxes under the ‘Honey Mission’ initiative that produced 246 metric
tonnes of honey so far
For the first time in India, under the ‘Honey Mission’ initiative, (KVIC) Khadi and Village
Industries Commission (in less than 2 years) distributed more than 1 lakh bee-boxes among
farmers and jobless youths across India. In August 2017, the initiative of ‘Honey Mission’ was
launched in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Sweet Revolution‘ in 2016
while introducing Banas Honey project at Deesa, Gujarat.
India and Bangladesh agreed to jointly produce film on the life of Mujibur Rahman
India and Bangladesh in a meeting agreed to jointly produce the film based on the life and works
of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and documentary of Bangladesh Liberation War
1971.The movie will be directed by Shyam Benegal and the scriptwriter of the movie will be Atul
Tiwari and the director of the documentary will be from Bangladesh who would be assisted by a
co-director from India.
India-US Bilateral Trade Meeting held in New Delhi
India-US Bilateral trade meeting was held in New Delhi. It was co-chaired by Suresh Prabhu,
Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Government of India and Mr. Wilbur Ross,
Secretary of Commerce, USA. Both the sides expressed satisfaction over the year 2018, with
bilateral trade in Goods and Services registering a growth of 12.6%.

Pak named its retaliatory action against India on February 27 as ‘Operation Swift Retort’
The Pakistan Air Force announced that they will observe its retaliatory action against India on
February 27 against the Balakot strike of Indian Air Force as ‘Operation Swift Retort’. The Indian
air strikes at Balakot terror camp on February 26 was response of Pakistan based Jaish-e-
Mohammed (JeM) attack by a suicide bomber in Pulwama that killed 40 CRPF jawans.
Indo-French navies will hold their joint exercise off the Goa-coat from 1st May to 10th May, 2019
India and France will be holding their 17th edition of the Indo-French naval exercise, Varuna 19.1
Arabian Sea off the Goa coast from 1st May to 10th May, 2019. The 2nd part of the naval exercise,
Varuna 19.2, will be held at May-end in Djibouti.
UNSC Designated Jaish-E-Mohammed Leader Masood Azhar As A Global Terrorist
The 1267 Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
designated Pakistan based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) leader Masood Azhar as a
‘global terrorist’ on May 1, 2019. This could be possible because China has lifted its technical hold
on the proposal to blacklist Masood Azhar. This move was the response of deadly terror attack in
Pulwama by Pakistan based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) which killed 40 Central
Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans.
The UK Parliament becomes the first national government to pass an Environment and Climate
Emergency
This move marks a serious emergency in dealing with climate change. The declaration was
preceded by a visit by teenage activist Greta Thunberg (to the Parliament), the feature of David
Attenborough’s documentary movie titled ‘Climate Change: The Facts’ and the 11-days of constant
protest by an environmental group ‘Extinction Rebellion‘.
The 16th Ministerial Meeting of Asia Cooperation Dialogue held in Doha, Qatar with the theme
‘Partners in Progress’
Asia Cooperation Dialogue’s (ACD) 16th Ministerial Meeting was held in Doha, Qatar. Deputy
Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani
headed the 2019 dialogue. The Indian delegation was led by Gen. (Dr) V.K. Singh (Retd), Minister
of State for External Affairs.
India-Australia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism
The 11th meeting of the joint working group on counter-terrorism between India and Australia
held at Canberra, Australia on May 2, 2019. Mahaveer Singhvi, Joint Secretary (Counter-
Terrorism) led Indian delegation while Paul Foley, Australia’s Ambassador for Counter Terrorism
led Australian delegation for the meeting.
GReVD: SIPRI launches Global Registry of Violent Deaths
Stockholm International peace research institute (SIPRI) has launched a new initiative named
Global Registry of Violent Deaths (GReVD) to establish the annual number of violent deaths
worldwide.GReVD will count deaths caused by all forms of violence and display these in an open-
source database and enable monitoring of progress on the world’s commitment to ‘significantly
reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere’ by 2030 as set out in the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—Goal 16.
Nirmala Sitharaman reached Kyrgyzstan Defence Ministers’ Meet and held bilateral meetings
Nirmala Sitharaman, the current Defence Minister of India held a bilateral meeting with General
Wei Fenghe, Honourable Defence Minister of China, in which they discussed regional and bilateral
security issues. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

G7 Environment Ministers met in Metz, France to discuss about climate crisis

Senegal’s lawmakers gives the approval of the removal of the prime minister’s position
In the very first initiative of President Macky Sall’s 2nd term in office, Senegalese parliament has
approved a constitutional reform to remove the post of prime minister. Mahammed Boun
Abdallah Dionne served as the Prime Minister of Senegal since 6th July, 2014. He is the 3rd prime
minister appointed by President Macky Sall. Dionne was preceded by Aminata Toure.
Mali’s President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta named a new government after the Ogossagou Massacre
Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, Mali’s president named a new government comprising of 37 members to
oversee the formation of a “broad-based” government, under Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, after
his predecessor Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga resigned in April amid the Ogossagou massacre.

SBI’s new rules on saving accounts and short-term loans effective from May 1
India’s largest bank State Bank of India (SBI) has moved to a new interest rate regime on large
savings account deposits with balance above Rs 1 lakh as well as short-term loans like overdraft
and cash credit. In March 2019, SBI has announced that it will link its interest rate on large
savings account deposits and short term loans to RBI’s repo rate which would be effective from
May 1, 2019.
PayPal India launched One Touch with the help of Google Smart Lock for seamless transactions
PayPal India used Google Smart Lock and launched its OneTouch experience in India. The launch
of the OneTouch feature permits Indian consumers to register their android device with PayPal
and stay logged into PayPal for further PayPal purchases on that device, thus removing the issue
of repeated log-ins and enabling a seamless payments experience.
LIC HFL initiated UDYAM-a skill development centre for marginalized youth in Bangalore
As a part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), LIC Housing Finance Ltd (LIC HFL) in
association with Lok Bharti Education Society has unveiled a skilling centre named “UDYAM” in
Bangalore, which will provide skill development training to marginalized youth in the sectors of
BFSI, Retail and IT/ITES.
ADB (Asian Development Bank) launched $5 Billion Healthy Oceans Action Plan at its 52nd
Annual Meeting
Asian Development Bank (ADB) launched 5$ billion Action Plan for Healthy Oceans and
Sustainable Blue Economies for the Asia and Pacific region. This will support ADB’s developing
member countries’ efforts for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), inclusive of
the SDG 14: Life Below Water. The Healthy Oceans Action Plan was launched at the 52nd Annual
Meeting of ADB’s Board of Governors, Fiji.
For the 1st time, Yes Bank has slipped by 3 notches to come down to the 10th spot as most valued
bank
For the 1st time, private lender YES Bank Ltd, in terms of market valuation, has slipped by 3 levels
to come down to the 10th spot. Previously, YES Bank was the 7th most-valued bank. The most
valued Indian bank with a market cap of Rs. 6.34 trillion is HDFC Bank Ltd. This is followed by
(SBI) State Bank of India and Kotak Mahindra Bank with market cap of Rs 2.76 trillion and Rs 2.68
trillion, respectively.
SBI Card raised Rs. 700 crore from banks and financial institutions to grow above industry
average
SBI Card raised Rs. 700 crore from various financial institutions including its parent SBI (State
Bank of India) in the 2nd half of FY19 (Financial Year) to grow above the industry average. SBI
Cards and Payment Services Pvt. Ltd (SBI Card) raised Rs. 100 crore from ICICI Securities Primary
Dealership Ltd, Rs. 250 crore from State Bank of India and Rs. 50 crore each from Canara Bank
and Axis Bank by issuing NCDs (Non Convertible Debentures) at 9.15% coupon.

RBI directs banks to enhance housing loan limits for eligibility under priority sector lending
To include the RRBs (Regional Rural Banks) and SFBs (Small Finance Banks) in the same level as
the other Scheduled Commercial Banks, RBI has notified them to enhance housing loan limits to
individuals up to Rs 35 lakh in metropolitan centres (which would have a population of over 10
lakhs) and Rs 25 lakh in other centres, under Priority sector Lending (PSL).

NASSCOM, GE Healthcare became strategic partner for health-tech innovation
IT industry body, The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) has
entered a strategic partnership with GE Healthcare. The objective is to bring digital healthcare
solutions to the market. NASSCOM has announced this partnership through its Centre of
Excellence-Internet of Things (CoE-IoT).
DCIL signed MoU with WAPCOS to jointly identify future projects
The Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) has signed a memorandum of understanding
(MoU) with Water & Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS) Limited, a mini-ratna PSU under
Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation. The objective is to
jointly recognize suitable future projects and carry out geo-technical investigation and
engineering consultancy.
GRSE to construct eight ASWSWCs for Indian Navy
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. has signed a contract with defence ministry
to build eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts (ASWSWCs) for Indian Navy at the cost
of Rs 6311.30 crore. These vessels will have a deep displacement of 750 tonnes and speed of 25
knots and also capable of full-scale sub surface surveillance of coastal waters.
BHEL and ARAI together signed MoU on different projects related to e-mobility
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)
have together signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) for effective cooperation on
different projects related to e-mobility and implement solutions for electric & trolley bus, EV
(Electric Vehicles) chargers, battery and charger testing, etc. The term electro mobility refers to
full and hybrid electric vehicles as well as those using hydrogen fuel cell technologies.
Netherlands emerges as the 3rd largest source of FDI in India
The Netherlands, a country in north-western Europe, became the third largest source of Foreign
Direct Investment (FDI) in India during 2017-18, with an investment of United States Dollar
(USD) 2.67 billion across all sectors. Mauritius and Singapore are the top two countries for FDI in
India during 2017-18 with an investment of USD 13.41 billion and USD 9.27 billion respectively.
SEBI has banned NSE from securities market for 6 months owing to the Co-Location Case
Market regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has banned NSE, National Stock
Exchange from gaining access to the securities market for a period of 6 months.S EBI also fined
NSE a sum of Rs.1,000 crore, that is, Rs. 624.89 crore and an additional 12% interest, from 1st
April 2014 for NSE's failure to exercise effective due diligence during co-location facility.
DPIIT recommends relaxation in Income Tax rules to facilitate fundraising by start-ups
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has brought relaxation in
the income tax rules related to residential properties’ sale and carry-forward of losses, in order to
facilitate fundraising by start-ups. The DPIIT recommended amendments in Section 54GB of the
Income Tax Act, that is, capital gain on transfer of residential property not to be charged in certain
cases and Section 79 that states, carry forward and set off of losses would be done for specific
companies.
London tops cities like Dubai, Singapore for Indian investments with an all-time high record of 52
investment projects in 2018
London & Partners (L&P), the Mayor of London’s promotional agency, in the new report analysis,
based on FDI (Foreign Direct Investments) Markets and FDI Intelligence data stated that in 2018,

the UK became the top-most nation to attract Indian FDI with 52 projects. US attracted Indian FDI
with 51 projects while the UAE with 32 projects.
CBDT and GSTN sign an agreement to seize evaders to decrease black money generation
The income tax (I-T) department and Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) signed a joint
agreement to enhance information exchange between the 2 firms and to arrest tax evaders and
decrease generation of black money.
According to ADB’s report, Asia-Pacific is estimated to grow 5.7% in 2019
According to Takehiko Nakao, President and Chairperson of Asian Development Bank, the Asia-
Pacific region is supposed to grow at 5.7% in 2019 but the rising trade tensions might hinder its
growth. ADB’s Asian Development Outlook 2019 report released in April states that developing
Asia comprising of 45 countries is estimated to grow by 5.7% in 2019
Vodafone Idea collaborates with IBM and signs a multi-million dollar IT deal
Vodafone Idea Ltd, India’s largest telecom operator notified a 5-year multi-million-dollar IT
outsourcing deal with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation). The collaboration will
contribute to Vodafone Idea’s merger synergy objectives by decreasing its IT related costs.
Income tax e-filers drop by over 6.6 lakh in 2018-19
According to Income Tax Department’s e-filling website, income tax e-filings in 2018-19 have
dropped by over 6.6 lakh. In 2017-18 the income tax e-filings was 6.74 crore and in 2018-19 it
was 6.68 crore, decrement of 6.6 lakh. According to the data, registered filers have grown by 15%
to 8.45 crore as on March 31, 2019.
Anti-dumping duty of 1,633.17 $ per tonne imposed on saccharin imports from Indonesia
Based on the recommendation of the Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry in March
2019, the revenue department under the Ministry of Finance has imposed anti-dumping duty of
1,633.17 $ per tonne on saccharin imports from Indonesia. This duty, unless withdrawn earlier,
will be valid for a period of 5 years.
Direct tax collections fall short of Rs 82,000 crore in 2018-19 due to shortage in corporate tax
collections
Direct tax collections fell short by Rs. 82,000 crore at 11.18 crore in FY2019 (financial year), and
one of the major reasons for this shortage is low corporate tax collections. The collections from
some regions were much lesser than the last year. Rs.12 lakh crore was the target set by the
government. But the sum total of the tax collection numbers indicate that it got 13.4% more than
the previous fiscal year but fell short of the updated target of 18%.
Foreign exchange reserves of India rose by USD 4.368 billion
According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, India’s foreign exchange has risen by USD 4.368
billion. Now the foreign exchange of India is USD 418.515 billion. The foreign currency assets has
risen by USD 4.387 billion to USD 390.421 billion and the gold reserves has remained unchanged
at USD 23.303 billion.
Microsoft released its own Blockchain–based Service
Recently, Microsoft has released its own fully managed Azure Blockchain Service. This will help in
simplifying the formation, management and governance of the businesses so that they can pay
attention to workflow logic and application development. Businesses can develop their
applications on this new cloud-based platform.
India’s MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) tourism growing at 8% a year
The report titled “India Inbound Tourism: Unlocking the Opportunity” published that India’s MICE
(meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition) tourism are growing at 8 percent a year. The
report is published by the Federation of Indian Chambers & Industry (FICCI) in collaboration with
Yes Bank. India has ranked 24th in MICE tourism worldwide and 5th in the Asia Pacific region.
GRIHA Council Launched "GRIHA for Existing Day Schools", a rating system for evaluating existing
schools in India
GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assesment) Council has launched "GRIHA for Existing
Day Schools" in India, to comply with the nation's vision for a greener and sustainable future. It is

The Goldman Environmental Foundation honoured 6 recipients for 2019 with the world’s

Goldman Environmental Prize is also known as Green Nobel Prize and awards a cash prize of

PC Chandra Purashkaar 2019 conferred to Padma Bhushan Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty
India’s most reputed cardiac surgeon and humanitarian,Dr Devi Prasad Shetty was awarded 27th
P.C. Chandra Puraskaar,the annual national award from the P.C. Chandra Group at Biswa Bangla
Convention Centre. He is also known as ‘The Man with Divine Hands’. In 2003, he has won Padma
Shri and Padma Bhushan for medicine in 2013.

Nepal’s 18 year old girl, Bandana sets Guinness World Records for Longest Dancing
Nepali teenager, Bandana danced continuously for 126 hours to set a Guinness World Records on
“Longest Dancing Marathon by an Individual”. Bandana surpassed the record set by
Kalamandalam Hemalatha, an Indian, who danced for 123 hours and 15 minutes in 2011.
Israel honoured 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War hero Lt. Gen JFR Jacob
A Jewish, Lieutenant General (retired) Jack Farj Rafael (JFR) Jacob honoured with a plaque on the
Wall of Honour at the Ammunition Hill. He fought World War II and India Pakistan war of 1965
and also negotiated the historic surrender of Pakistani troops in Dhaka after the 1971 Bangladesh
Liberation war. After retirement, he became the Governor of two states- Goa and Punjab. He died
in 2016 at the age of 92.
G D ‘Robert’ Govender honoured with V K Krishna Menon Award
Indian –origin journalist G D ‘Robert’ Govender conferred with V K Krishna Menon Award 2019 in
UK for his contribution as a pioneer of decolonised journalism. The award is given to mark the
123rd birth anniversary of V K Krishna Menon, Indian diplomat and politician. Govender is the
first person who has been awarded the V K Krishna Menon posthumously. He had died in the UK
in 2016.

Advisory Council now has 12 members. In December 2018, Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian
appointed as the Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) to the central government for three years.
55 year old Stevo Pendarovski won North Macedonia’s presidential elections
Backed by North Macedonia's ruling party, Stevo Pendarovski, the 55-year-old former political-
science professor won the presidential runoff vote amid promises to push the Balkan state
towards NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and European Union membership.
Pendarovski had 51.7% of votes whereas Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, his challenger, had
44.7% votes.
Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo emerged as the President of the Republic of Panama
The Panama Electoral Tribunal announced Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo (with 95% of votes counted)
as the winner of Panama’s presidential election. Cortizo (with 33% of the votes) closest rival was
Romulo Roux (with 31% votes). Romulo was from the former President Ricardo Martinelli’s right
wing Democratic Change Party. Cortizo was the candidate for the left-wing Democratic
Revolutionary Party.

ICRISAT-led team collaborated with the BGI-Shenzhen to sequence genetic code to develop
chickpeas resistant to vagaries of weather conditions
The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics' (ICRISAT) team partnered
with the BGI-Shenzhen, China, involving 39 scientists from 21 research institutes worldwide,
notified that scientists have successfully completed the largest-ever exercise of entire-genome re-
sequencing of chickpea to identify genes that are resistant to various extreme factors. The study
has been published in Nature Genetics online.
Giant asteroid ‘99942 Apophis’ will fly past Earth in a decade
The 340m wide asteroid named 99942 Apophis will fly past Earth like a ‘moving star- like point of
light’ on April 13, 2029. It will fly above the earth’s surface at 30,500 km and first become visible
with a naked eye in the night sky over the Southern Hemisphere from the east coast to the west
coast of Australia.
Japan’s first privately developed rocket “Momo-3” reached outer space
A Japanese aerospace start-up Interstellar Technology Inc. has successfully launched a first
privately developed rocket ‘Momo-3’ into space. The unmanned rocket launched from its test site
in Taiki on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The rocket is 10 meters in length, 50
centimeters in diameter and weighs about 1 ton. ‘Momo-3’ rocket has the capability of putting
payloads into the orbit.
Space X launched Falcon-9 rocket for space station resupply mission with Dragon Spacecraft
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (Space X) launched its 17th commercial resupply mission to
the International Space Station (ISS) by using Falcon 9 rocket with Dragon Spacecraft. The 213-
foot-tall rocket lifted off at about 2:48 a.m. local time from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in
Florida. The resupply mission contains almost 5,500 pounds of science, supplies and hardware.
Researchers identify drugs that block CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing
In the journal ‘Cell’ researchers authored that the discovery of the first small-molecule inhibitors
of the Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9 (SpCas9) protein could enable more precise control over
CRISPR-Cas9-based genome editing. The research was headed by Amit Choudhary of the Broad
Institute, Harvard Medical School, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Ministry of Defence approved Indian Navy’s Rs 3,600 crore deal for 10 ‘Kamov Ka-31’ Helicopters
Ministry of Defence gave approval to Indian Navy to acquire 10 ‘Kamov Ka-31’ Airborne Early
Warning and Control Helicopter for a deal worth of Rs 3,600 crore from Russia. These 10
helicopters would be deployed on the aircraft carriers and warships of the Indian Navy including
the INS Vikrant and Grigorovich-class frigates. The Kamov Ka-31 helicopters will strengthen the
capability of Indian Navy against aerial threats to its aircraft carriers and large warships.

Ranjit's motto was 'Sada Rane Jayate' or 'Ever Victorious in Battle'.
The US Air Force tested a laser system to shoot down multiple air launched missiles
The US Air Force Research Laboratory tested a laser system called ‘Self-Protect High Energy Laser
Demonstrator (SHiELD) at the US Army’s White Sands Missile range in New Mexico which
successfully shot down multiple air-launched missiles while in flight. The system is designed for
the purpose of protecting the aircrafts from incoming surface-to-air and air-to-air launched
missiles.
INS Vela: Indian Navy’s 4th Scorpene-class made in India submarine launched
INS Vela, Indian Navy's 4th Scorpene-class submarine was launched at Mazagon Dockyard in
Mumbai. This is the fourth submarine in the series of six submarines under Project 75 built by
Mazagon Dock Ltd, Mumbai. The Scorpene-class submarine has been termed as the Kalavari Class.
NASA’s first Planetary Defence Technology to collide with small moonlet in 2022
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will hit an asteroid named Didymoon
or Didymos B with a spacecraft called Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) in 2022. This will
be the first mission which demonstrates a planetary defence technique. The asteroid is 150 m tall
which orbiting a larger body called Didymos A. This will help in understanding the state of the
asteroid system.
Approval from NOTTO required for organ allocation to foreign nationals
The National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), an apex body that coordinates
with States on the procurement and distribution of organs in compliance with the Transplantation
of Human Organs Act (THOA), has issued guidelines according to which an organ could be
allocated to foreigners only after it gives its approval.

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk won PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award
The 27-year old Liverpool defender and captain of the Netherland National team, Virgil Van Dijk
won the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year Award for 2018-
19 after a sterling Premier League campaign. Van Dijk had joined Liverpool from Southampton in
January 2018 for a fee of £75million (Euro 75 million).
Apurvi Chandela achieves World No. 1 ISSF Rankings in 10m Air Rifle
According to the latest rankings released by International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), world
cup gold medallist, Apurvi Chandela became the world number one in women’s 10m Air Rifle
category with 1,926 rating points. The 26-year old Apurvi Chandela is among the five Indian
shooters who have earned the Olympic quota for the Tokyo 2020.
Bajrang Punia won gold at Ali Aliev Tournament 2019
A 25-year old, Bajrang Punia won a gold medal at Ali Aliev Tournament, held at Kaspiysk in
Dagestan, Russia. He defeated Russian wrestler Viktor Rassadin in 65-kg category by 13-8. This
was his second gold medal in the last 10 days. Last week, Punia won a gold medal in the 65-kg
category at the Asian Championship in Xi’an, China.

Saurav and Joshna won individual titles in Asian Squash Championship 2019
Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa won men’s and women’s title respectively in the Asian
Individual Squash Championship held at National Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from
May 1 to 5, 2019. The event was organised by the Asian Squash Federation. This is the first time
India won both men’s and women’s titles. Previously, Asian Individual Squash Championship was
held in Chennai in 2017.
West Indies record ODI cricket’s first-ever 350+ score opening stand
West Indies player John Campbell and Shai Hope created the history by making first-ever 350 plus
run opening stand against Ireland. Both players shared 365 runs for the first wicket and also
become the only opening pair to score 150 runs each in one inning of a 50-over match. The venue
of the match was Clontarf Cricket Club Ground, Dublin, Ireland.

The official Twitter account of the Indian Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public
Information tweeted that an Indian Army mountaineering expedition team has sited mysterious
footprints of mythical himalayan beast “Yeti” measuring 32×15 inches (81 centimeters by 38
centimeters) close to Makalu Base Camp,located in North-Eastern Himalayas on 09 April 2019.
Country’s biggest stucco figurine unearthed in Telangana’s Phanigiri
Indian archaeologists recently unearthed a life-sized stucco sculpture from a Buddhist site at
Phanigiri in Suryapet, Telangana. As per heritage department officials it represents one of
Bhodhisattva in JathakaChakra.This is the largest stucco sculpture found from India till date. It is
considered to have been built at at peak of Ikshavaku dynasty.
Bajirao, the last captive white tiger at Mumbai’s national park, dies at 18
The last captive white tiger at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali, Mumbai named
Bajirao died due to old age related problems at the age of 18. He was born at the SGNP in
2001 to tigress Renuka and tiger Sidharth. He suffered from chronic ankylosis on left shoulder
and chronic senile generalised arthritis for the last four years.
UN report termed ‘Global Assessment’ notifies that 40% of amphibian species and 1 million of
insect and fauna are threatened
The UN Report termed as ‘Global Assessment’, stated that, among the approximated 8 million
plant, insect and animal species, around 1 million is at risk of extinction within decades due to
human activity. The report was endorsed by 130 countries, including the U.S., Russia and China.
The research study was launched in Paris by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

US Judge and Civil Rights Icon Damon J. Keith died aged 96
United States Sixth Circuit Judge, Damon Jerome Keith, a grandson of slaves passed away at the
age of 96 in Detroit, the city where the prominent lawyer was appointed in 1967 to the US District
Court. He was born on 4 July 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in Star Wars passed away at 74 in North Texas
Actor Peter Mayhew, well known for portraying Chewbacca the Wookiee in the Star Wars films,
has died at the age of 74 at his home in North Texas, U.S. He was born on 19 May 1944 in Barnes,
London.
CPM leader and former finance minister, V Viswanatha Menon passed away at 92 in Kochi
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former finance minister, V Viswanatha
Menon Passed away at the age of 92 in Kochi, Kerala. He was popularly known as "Ambadi
Viswam". He was born in Ernakulam, Kerala.i. He served as the Finance Minister in 1987 during
the Left Democratic Front government led by E.K. Nayanar.
Former Chief Justice of Madras and Kerala High Courts, Justice Subhashan Reddy passed away
Former Chief Justice of Madras and Kerala High Courts, Justice Subhashan Reddy died at the age of
76 in Gachibowli due to age-related ailments. He was born at Amberpet in Hyderabad, Telangana
in 1943. After his retirement, he served as the chairperson on the AP State Human Rights
Commission and acted as the Andhra Pradesh Lokayukta in 2012.
Former Windies batsman Seymour Nurse passes away aged 85
Former West Indies Batsman Seymour Nurse died after prolonged illness at the age of 85. He was
born on 10 November 1933 at Saint Michael, Barbados. Nurse has played 29 Tests between 1960
and 1969.
Former billiards player Derek Sippy Passed Away
Former Indian Cue sports Player, Coach and administrator Derek Sippy, who was in his 60s, died
due to a massive heart attack in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His death was confirmed to Press Trust of
India (PTI) by Manav Panchal, Honorary Secretary of the Billiards and Snooker Association of
Maharashtra (BSAM).

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Kerala High Court judge, Justice Parappillil
Ramakrishnan Nair Ramachandra Menon (P.R. Ramachandra Menon) as Chief Justice Of
Chhattisgarh High Court while exercising his powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the
Constitution of India. At the same time, Bombay High Court judge Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka
elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and Justice Shripathi Ravindra, a judge of
the Delhi High Court was named as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
BSNL launches ‘Bharat fibre’ for high speed broadband Internet service with local channel

late C P KunjahammedIlaya. On June 26, 2018, Fathima Muthu Beevi took over the charge as 39th
head of the dynasty

Prominent writer and academician, Maramraju Satyanarayana Rao died due to cardiac arrest in
Hyderabad. He was 84. He was born at Jayyaram village in Mahabubabad district, Telangana.
Veteran CPI leader and former MP Duti Krushna Panda died at 97
Former Lok Sabha member and Veteran CPI leader Duti Krushna Panda passed away due to old
age-related ailments in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He was 97. He was elected to the state assembly
from Aska seat in 1990.
New Act passed by Gujarat Assembly which allowed Shops & Businesses to remain open 24×7
‘Gujarat Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act,
2019’ passed by Gujarat Assembly which came into force from May 1, 2019. The Act will allow the
shops and other businesses in the state to operate 24×7. The Act was passed by Gujarat Assembly
earlier in February, 2019. The Act replaced the Gujarat Shops and Establishments Act, 1948 which
prevented shops and other businesses from operating between 12 to 6 a.m.
Order of St George Award 2019 presented to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Indian spiritual leader, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, was presented with the ‘Order of St. George’ Award
for the year 2019 as part of the Commemorative Feast at the Puthuppally St. George Orthodox
Church (462-year-old) in Kottayam, Kerala. In 1981, Sri Sri founded the Art of Living Foundation,
a volunteer-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) providing social support to the people.
Karnataka Government limits the weight of school bags not more than 10% of the child’s weight
Karnataka government issued a circular, following the order of the Union Ministry of Human
Resource Development, directing all schools in the state, including government, aided and
unaided institutions, to limit the weight of a schoolbag which is not more than 10% of the child’s
weight. The third Saturday of every month should be followed as “No School Bag Day”.
The voice of Kerala’s Mappila songs, Eranholi Moosa passes away
Veteran singer, Eranholi Moosa died at the age of 75 at his residence at Gopalpet in Thalassery in
Kerala’s Kannur district. He was undergoing treatment for pulmonary diseases for quite some
time. He has served as the vice-chairman of the Folklore Academy.
