SYNOPSIS:
It is a film based on the life of the American surgeon Benjamin (Ben) Carson. The film
stars Cuba Gooding Jr., under the direction of Thomas Carter, and with the direct
promotion of Johnson & Johnson, an important American industry.
Ben Carson is black and that condition is a social disadvantage in almost everyone. In the
United States, racial segregation would not end formally until long after birth, so that, as
a child, he had to deal with it. In addition, when he was 8 years old, his parents divorced
and he had to move to Detroit, with his mother and brother. Although he was a rebel boy
due to the conditions already raised, Ben was intelligent. His mother plays a leading role
in correcting and forcing him to read, because very soon Ben begins to excel at school.
Unfortunately, the racism prevailing at that time causes many injustices to be committed
with him.
Young Carson got a job in a hospital as an internal doctor. On an occasion of absolute
emergency, he had to make the decision to surgically intervene on his own to a girl,
despite not being authorized to proceed in that way. If something serious happened, he
would be responsible. However, the other option was to let her die, so nothing could be
worse, so she dared to perform the operation.
After the reckless act, the hospital director called him. Ben was afraid of being fired, but
to his relief, he was congratulated for making the right decision at a time as complicated
as that. And he was awarded a scholarship to specialize.
Ben worked very hard in the search for the solution to prevent death from hemorrhage in
Siamese separation surgery. The main problem he found is that some Siamese people
share part of the cardiovascular system, so the separation implies the death of one or both
brothers.
One day, while watching a dripping tap, he found the answer to the problem that obsessed
him. He managed to imagine a method to avoid excessive bleeding.
This is how Ben Carson dared to perform a Siamese separation surgery with the help of
a huge team of doctors under his instructions. After 22 hours of continuous work, the
separation was successful and its prestige, fame, recognition and authority in the field of
neurosurgery were strengthened.

What did you learn about the movie?
Sometimes we feel hopeless. We are easy prey to despair and disappointment. The film
teaches us to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and, rather, to find a way to solve the
problems. Personally, he taught me that the best way out of poverty is study. This
happened to young Carson. Due to the positive influence of his mother, he was able to
develop his capacity for analysis and his capacity for thinking.
How does the film relate to the academic program you are studying?
The film has a high moral content and self-improvement. I think we can use it to perform
therapies and rescue values in terms of study.
