SINOPSIS:
Es una película basada en la vida del cirujano estadounidense Benjamín (Ben) Carson. La
película tiene como protagonista estelar a Cuba Gooding Jr., bajo la dirección de Thomas
Carter, y con la promoción directa de Johnson & Johnson, importante industria
estadounidense.
Ben Carson es negro y esa condición es una desventaja social en casi todo el mundo. En
Estados Unidos, la segregación racial no acabaría formalmente hasta mucho después de su
nacimiento, de modo que, desde niño, tuvo que lidiar con ello. Además, cuando tenía 8 años,
sus padres se divorciaron y tuvo que mudarse a Detroit, con su madre y su hermano. Aunque
era un chico rebelde debido a las condiciones ya planteadas, Ben era inteligente. Su madre
juega un papel preponderante al corregirle y obligarle a leer, pues muy pronto Ben comienza
a destacar en la escuela. Lamentablemente, el racismo reinante en aquella época provoca que
se cometan muchas injusticias con él.
El joven Carson consiguió empleo en un hospital como médico interno. En una ocasión de
absoluta emergencia, tuvo que tomar la decisión de intervenir quirúrgicamente por su cuenta
a una niña, a pesar de no estar autorizado para proceder de esa manera. Si pasaba algo grave,
él sería el responsable. No obstante, la otra opción era dejarla morir, por lo que nada podía
ser peor, de modo que se atrevió a realizar la operación.
Tras el temerario acto, lo llamó el director del hospital. Ben temía que lo despidieran, pero,
para su alivio, lo felicitaron por haber tomado la decisión correcta en un momento tan
complicado como ese. Y lo premiaron con una beca para especializarse.
Ben trabajó muy duro en la búsqueda de la solución para evitar la muerte por hemorragia en
la cirugía de separación de siameses. El principal problema que encontró es que algunos
siameses comparten parte del sistema cardiovascular, por lo que la separación implica la
muerte de uno o los dos hermanos.
Un día, mientras observaba un grifo que goteaba, encontró la respuesta al problema que lo
obsesionaba. Consiguió imaginar un método para evitar el sangrado excesivo.
Fue así como Ben Carson se atrevió a realizar una cirugía de separación de siameses con la
ayuda de un enorme equipo de médicos bajo sus instrucciones. Tras 22 horas de trabajo
continuo, la separación fue exitosa y se afianzaron su prestigio, su fama, su reconocimiento
y autoridad en el campo de la neurocirugía.

 ¿Qué aprendiste sobre la película?
A veces nos sentimos sin esperanza. Somos presa fácil de la desesperación y la decepción.
La película nos enseña a dejar de sentir lástima por nosotros mismos y, más bien, buscar
la manera de solucionar los problemas. A título personal, me enseñó que el mejor camino
para salir de la pobreza es el estudio. Al joven Carson le sucedió así. Por la influencia
positiva de su señora madre, él pudo desarrollar su capacidad de análisis y su capacidad
de pensamiento.

 ¿Cómo te hizo sentir la película?

La película me hizo sentir muy emocionada. La vi en el silencio de la madrugada. Yo
pude concentrarme en el desarrollo de la trama. Yo pude vivir cada momento. Nosotros
no perdemos el tiempo al analizar una película como esta porque su contenido está lleno
de valores vitales, valores religiosos, valores que una mamá trata de inculcar en sus hijos
pese a las limitaciones que ella misma tiene. Algo que me llamó la atención es que la
Señora Carson jamás involucró a sus niños en sus propios problemas. Buscó la solución
de una manera aislada, pero al mismo tiempo les daba una voz de aliento para que no se
rindieran. Cambió hábitos malos como ver excesivamente la televisión por hábitos
buenos como elaborar informes con base a lectura de libros.

 ¿Cómo se relaciona la película con el programa académico que estás estudiando?

La película tiene un alto contenido moral y de superación personal. Creo que podemos
usarla para realizar terapias y rescatar los valores en cuanto al estudio.

Sometimes we feel hopeless. We are easy prey to despair and disappointment. The film
teaches us to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and, rather, to find a way to solve the
problems. Personally, he taught me that the best way out of poverty is study. This
happened to young Carson. Due to the positive influence of his mother, he was able to
develop his capacity for analysis and his capacity for thinking.

 How did the movie make you feel?

The movie made me feel very excited. I saw her in the silence of the morning. I could
concentrate on the development of the plot. I could live every moment. We do not waste
time analyzing a movie like this because its content is full of vital values, religious values,
values that a mother tries to instill in her children despite the limitations she has.
Something that caught my attention is that Mrs. Carson never involved her children in

habits such as watching television excessively for good habits such as preparing reports
based on reading books.
