Science One: Acids and Alkalis
Words Definitions
An acid Is a substance that reacts with bases to produce salts. Or a substance
that has a sharp or sour taste.
A base Is a substance that reacts with acids to produce salts.
An alkalis Are bases that dissolve in water. Or ashes of plants.
The litmus Is a vegetables dye that is used to taste the acidity of solutions.
It is green, but when put in an ACID solution, it turns RED. If the
solution is ALKALINE, it turns BLUE
The PH scale Is a scale used to measure the strength of acids or alkalis
The acid rain Is the rain that contains an acid because of the dissolved gases of the
burned coal or oil in water.
Vinegar An acidic liquid that contains acetic acid.
Lime Is calcium hydroxide.
Baking Browder Is bicarbonate of soda.
A wasp sting Is alkaline, so it can be neutralized with an acid

Solids Are states of matter that have fixed shape that cannot changed
easily.
In a solid, particles are packed together and can hardly move.
Liquids Are states of matter that have no fixed shape and can only be
picked up in a container.
In a liquid, particles have enough rooms to change places
Gases Are states of matter that have no fixed shape and should be kept in
closed containers.
In a gas, particles move freely to fill any space.
Steam Is the gaseous form of water
The kinetic Theory States that a matter is made up of particles which are always in
motion = ( Always moving).
