TOOL PICTURE AND DESCRIPTION (3-5 sentences, in Bahasa Indonesia or in English)

The hull is the main structure of the ship below the main outside deck. The hull
composed of an outside lid (or skin) and an inside framework to which the lid is
protected. The skin and structure are usually made of steel and secured by welding.
However, there are some areas where rivets are used. The steel skin may additionally be
referred to as shell plating.

PURPOSE OF THE TOOL

The hull of a ship is that the most notable structural entity of the ship. The use of a
hull on a ship is without doubt the most important things. As a part of a ship, hull has its
own function. The main function of a hull include :
a) To maintain its water tight integrity and reduce water drag.
b) Provides buoyancy to prevent ship from drowning.

METAL TYPE, AND WHAT IT IS MADE OF

Before we start identifying what type of metal that compose the hull of a ship, we
need to understand first the definition of metal itself. According to Cambridge’s
dictionary, metal is “a chemical element, such as iron or gold, or a mixture of such
elements, such as steel, that is generally hard and strong, and through which electricity
and heat can travel.” So by just reading the definition of a metal, we can imagine the
appearance and properties of a metal.
A hull is fabricated from numerous metals. However, the most common are usually steel
and aluminium. Each of them has its own pros and cons. But I am going to focus on
aluminium.
Aluminium is the most plentiful metal within the earth’s crust. But it is never
found free as a single element in the nature. All of the aluminium we found on earth has
combined with other elements to form compounds. Two of the most common
compounds are Potassium Aluminium Sulfate (KAl(SO4)2.12H2O), and Aluminium Oxide
(Al2O3). Aluminium Oxide can be found in an ore called Bauxite. Bauxite consists of 45-
60% aluminium oxide, along with various impurities such as sand, iron, and other metals.
Alumina, or Aluminium Oxide, is extracted from the bauxite through refining. Aluminium
is separated from the bauxite by using a hot solution of caustic soda and lime. The
aluminium mixture is heated and filtered and therefore the remaining aluminium dried to
a white powder. The process of which Aluminium are extracted is called The Hall-Heroult
and Bayer process.
