Rationale

People go to universities and finish a college degree permanently with the

objective of employing oneself in earning a living. Primarily, most parents of students send

their children to schools with the end goal to prepare their children’s future. The

researchers believe that when students graduate, they initially think that it is the end of

their academic journey. However, when they finish college, they need to find a job or

occupation that fits the degree they graduated in. It only means that they are equipped

with the knowledge and skills in facing the real world. One of the realities is finding a job

or a profession that fits the degree from which the students graduated from.

With this, globalization brings about stiff competition among graduates who are

pressured to compete among themselves. Some of them apply for jobs which are not

parallel to the degree they took in college just so they will be able to seek employment.

Hence, there is the challenge for universities and similar academic institutions to assure

their students that their education guarantees them in finding a better career path.

One of the challenges faced in education is the objective to be relevant with the

current and future demands of the society undergoing change (social, economic and

political). It is often impossible for education to be planned to a static standard because

the entirety of the environment the graduate must face is flexible and dynamic. Hence, it

is necessary for the institution to insure the possible circumstances of the environment

the graduate must face and take into consideration the manner of teaching and curriculum

whether it is updated to fit this diversity for the graduates to effectively and efficiently

perform even in scarce resources (Schomburg, 2003).

Primarily, institutions aim of producing highly competent, qualified and employable

graduates for the country and overseas. Various strategies and techniques are being

done to meet this goal. The curriculum content is being changed to enhance the quality

of education in order to prepare and provide graduates with better career options and

opportunities (Arcelo, n.d.).

Surveying the graduates the institution has produced (from their whereabouts to

how they are coping with the real world) can help broaden the perspectives of the

administration, faculty, students and even parents and sponsors. Information such as the

income, the economic status, current job title, working time and duration in every job

undertaken, methods used in every job search, and values and skills developed in the

work place deemed relevant for the institution to take note of (Arcelo, n.d.).

The BA Communication program of Holy Name University from its operation has

already produced several batches of graduates since it has started to offer as Bachelor

of Arts in Mass Communication. However, up to this day, there has not been a tracer

study conducted. Therefore, the researchers are prompted to conduct this tracer study.

The information gathered in a tracer study evaluates the results of the curriculum,

possible deficits, and manner of teaching of a specific institution of higher education. This

information gathered can be a source of future development and can be a context for

quality assurance for future enrollees and accreditors who may come to evaluate

curricural programs (Schomburg, 2003).

Through tracer study, the BA Communication program can determine whether their

curriculum and techniques are effective and relevant. Strategically speaking, the program,
as well as the institution, can identify areas which may need improvement and suggest

certain innovations including the overcoming possible deficiencies and inadequateness

of the program. This paper aims to trace the employment of the BA Communication and

AB Communication graduates of Holy Name University, specifically on their employment

status, transition time from graduation to employment and the appropriateness/adequacy

of their job to their degree program they earned.
