Design Brief – Water Filtration (Year 2)

Introduction: Design Brief:


Oh no! The water from our water fountain at school Your role is to create a water filter that can be
tastes yuck! The students in the school feel that it is used in the school. You will explore different
unsafe to drink brown, unfiltered water. What can materials that filters water and find out which
you do to make the water clear and safe to drink is the most effective. You will need to

You will be given 5 weeks to design and

Your design must include:

filter (2 – 4 cm thick). out your designs with drinking water test kit.
• The second layer as activate charcoal. (2cm thick). Record results.
• The third layer as either gravel or small stones. (5 cm
thick). Week 5: Present your findings to the class.
• The fourth layer as clean sand. (7-9 cm thick). Make sure you ask the teacher to take pictures
of your water filters to refer back later.
You must layer your water filter exactly to this. You may
change the first and third layer.
