Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

A broken home is not a reason for you to GIVE UP, instead a reason for

you to GET UP, and to stand stronger.(Julius Erving, 2014)The home is

the first and immediate entity of every child. He or she is born into and

regarded as a full member of the home. By its nature the home is a

recognized group of people who are joined together either by

marriage or birth. According to G.W. Davidson et al (Edo, 2015)

marriage is the ceremony, act or covenant by which a man and a

woman who becomes a kind of an agreement on fixed terms, a bond

which is expected to be respected and adhered to by both parties to

the agreement. Hence, it is customary or common to hear the new

family can’t in registries and churches in taking the marriage vow, both

the bride and the bride groom usually promise to live together for

better or worse for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health till death

do them part. Naturally, the ultimate aim of any marriage is the

bearing of children which regarded as a divine blessing from God. To

appreciate God’s kind gestures both parents and expected to

adequately take care of and bring up such children faithfully nature

provides the child through the union of two people.

Parents should realize that they are their children is “Idols” who

they look up to. Any thoughtful parent should be able to recognize the

tragedy broken home or marriage brings to the children one of the

frustrated consequences of broken family or marriage. The children are

deprived of the influence of other parents since they are in the custody

of one parent just as plants must have both sunshine and rain for their

growth and the productivity, so also the children require both of

present parents and its guidance for their development in life. The

absence of such a balance may later cause all kind of personality and

academic distresses in the children. Therefore, it is pertinent to state

here that a decision breaks up a marriage or home is a risk in itself and

detrimental to the academic performance of the children.

A broken family can negatively affect all domains of your child’s

development. The effects of a broken family on a child’s development

Page

depend on numerous factors, including the age of the child at the

time of parents’ separation, and on the personality and family

relationships. Although students may experience few negative

developmental effects, older children and teenagers may experience

some problems in their social, emotional and educational functioning.

Slowed academic development is another common way that

separation of the parents affects children. The emotional stress of

separated parents can be enough to stunt your child’s academic

progress, but the lifestyle changes and instability of a broken family

can contribute to poor educational outcomes. This poor academic

progress can stem from a number of factors, including instability in the

home environment, inadequate financial resources and inconsistent

routines.

The researchers had made some problems/issue but this one has

caught our feelings and attention. Because we know that some of the

students (hardworking or still trying but still they have dream/s)

nowadays that has a same burden suffers from being a product of a

broken family, they just smiling around outside when day but cry arise

deep inside when night. That mentally and emotionally problem can

be the most reason why students can’tprecisely focus in their schools,

that essential needs to have a better and successful future. This study

want to know how the students affects by being in a broken family in

their daily lives and hoping that using this research paper helps them

that instead of taking it as a negative and to die with it, but making it a

reason why should they live, why they need to overcome it, and makes

them to dream again that they will pursue until they achieved it.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

A lot of studies show that there is a big effect of the broken

homes on the academic performance of children in school. The family

back ground plays has a big on the academic performance of

students at senior high school in the school system. It is generally

accepted that the quality of family interactions has important

associations with the children’s academic motivation and

achievement. According to (Morgan et al, 2013), stresses that children

from low socio-economic status households and communities develop

academic skills more slowly compared to their counterparts from

Page

higher socio-economic status families. The low socio-economic status

(economic struggling families) deprives children of what is necessary to

support their growth and welfare. Initial academic skills are correlated

with home environment where low literacy involvement and chronic

stress negatively affect a child’s academic performance. Parents from

low socio-economic background are less likely to have the financial

resources or time availability to provide children with academic

support

Globally, Hargreaves (2014), reported that in Germany students

with parents who are involved in their school tend to have fewer

problems, and better academic performance and are more likely to

complete high school than students who are not involved in their

school. Good grades require positive effects of parental involvement

that have to be demonstrated at both elementary and secondary

levels across several studies with the largest effect often occurring at

elementary level where numeracy, literacy as well as values of human

development are very essential.

It is important to note that education process and success is

positively impacted by favorable home learning opportunities such as

parents encouraging that their children have the right feeding, have

security, and are happy and calm. They further reported that creating

a positive physical and mental atmosphere in the home helps to

prepare students to be ready and able to learn. A parent child

relationship characterized by nurturing, acceptance and

encouragement as well as parents’ responsiveness to the child needs

correlates with positive academic performance. However according

to the University of Minnesota extension parental over protectiveness,

authoritarianism, disapproval and punishment often have a negative

relationship with students’ academic performance. The relationship

family socio-economic status and the academic performance has

been well established in sociological research.

The problem, which have been found to be associated with

broken families, have also attracted to the attention of many

sociologist and other scholars. The researchers have been selected to

study and determine the factors behind the various academic

performances with the experience of having a broken family among

selected Grade 12 HUMSS Students in Laguna college of Business and

Arts.

1) How frequent are being broken homes affecting the selected

Grade 12 HUMSS students?

1.1 Often;

1.2 Daily; and

1.3 When having problem/s

2) What is the current status of the selected Grade 12 HUMSS student in

their Academic Performance?

1.1 Did not meet the expectation;

1.2 Poor;

1.3 Doing good;

1.4 Very good; and

1.5 Excellent

3) Is There significant relation between broken homes and the

academic performance among the selected Grade 12 HUMSS

students?

Hypothesis

problems in the society, this study will be also benefit for them that can

be used for deeper understanding and acting about it.

Future Researchers

This research will help them as their guide in conducting a

research; also it will give them ideas for their research, and having a

deeper studying about this.

Researchers

This study will also benefit to the researchers for learning with the

respondents.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study was conducted with the participation of selected

Grade-12 HUMSS students in senior high school department of Laguna

College of Business and Arts in Calamba City SY 2019-2020. The

respondents were composed of selected Grade-12 HUMSS senior high

school students. This study is limited only on determining the effects on

how being on the broken family gives such a huge impact on the

student’s academic performances, social and emotional problems

and how they deal with it. The researchers study the relationship

between the student’s academic performance and the effects in

them being on a broken family. The researchers will select which

students are going to be in participation, with the chosen student’s

consent.
