Extremism and Radicalism Globally

Extremism is the belief of someone who acts excessively and is considered the correct.
This act refers to a person’s behavior that is considered outside the norm, on the other hand
radicalization is commonly used to describe the processes by which a person adopts extreme views
or practice to the point of legitimizing the use of violence. The number of violent extremism is
increased over the past several years and become a serious threat for the international community,
they are threatening the world’s peace and security. Considering of this, the Republic of Albania
believes that all forms of extremism and radicalism should be eliminated from the world.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, up to 200 Albanians have traveled to
Syria to join extremism group, such as ISIS and al-Qaeda. Following the peak of 83 Albanians
leaving for Syria, countering violent extremism became a national priority. The Republic of
Albania has drafted a strategy to countering violent extremism. The strategy incorporates a wide
range, including parents, teachers, social workers, government agencies, and young people from
target areas. The strategy has three main target areas: community outreach and engagement,
countering extremist propaganda, and developing long-term and comprehensive CVE policies.

Understanding the issue about preventing and countering violent extremism and
radicalism, Republic of Albania proposes some solutions, which are:

1. Enhancing the security in schools and internet to counter extremist propaganda. In recent
years many people, including students and extremism group are using internet every day.
Considering of this, enhancing the security in schools and internet are important, so that
the people and the students avoided from the extremism propaganda that spread in the
internet.
2. Developing an anti-extremism and radicalism course in schools. This course will help the
students to learn how to fight extremism and radicalism ideology.
3. Strengthening partnership with various related United Nations bodies, such as United
Nation Security Council to assist in handling extremism.
