I . Setting

This famous short story was set in Intramuros, Manila, and its author, Nick Joaquin,
wrote it after WWII. This story of a marriage that started with every promise of lasting passion
and love later tracks the disintegration of the relationship. Characters in this story, which has
magical or supernatural elements that are quite common in modern Latin literature, include
Badoy, the narrator, and his love interest, Agueda. Joaquin is viewed as one of the first
originators of magical realism in the fiction of his native country, the Philippines.

II. Characters / Description

Anastasia
– old woman, who is so obedient to her mistress, accused for being a
witch and believes in superstitious beliefs

Agueda
– pretty, young woman who is so curious, hardheaded, brave and very
much willing to know her future husband

Badoy Monitiya
– a vain good looking man who will do everything to get what he wants
and revengeful

Dona Agueda
– old lady who has gray hair, full of sentiments, emotional and
Resentful

Dona Agueda’s daughter

– a vain curious girl, who is persistent to know about the past of her
mother

Don Badoy Monitiya

– a great lover, emotional and full of sentiment old man, who repents
for what he has done to Agueda

Voltaire
– Believe in superstitious belief and was like his grandma who at an early age want to
know who will he marry
III. Plot

Exposition
Anastasia the maga , told the girls about the legend ; that they would be able to know the
man fated for them to marry by reciting an incantation in front of the mirror , but if gone wrong ,
they would see a devil instead.

Rising Action
Agueda tried the incantation in front of the mirror then saw Don Badoy. They had some
confrontation and she ended up fighting Don Badoy because he wouldn’t let her go.

Climax
Badoy saw his grandson, Voltaire, that he once saw a witch in front of a mirror when he
caught him doing the same incantation. Amazed of what his grandfather said, Voltaire told him
his grandma once saw a devil in a mirror.

Resolution
Don Badoy reminisced the time when he saw Agueda in front of the mirror and when he
fell madly inlove with her. That old love had been blinded by hatred, and that is now rebuild but
it’s too late because Agueda is already dead.

Conclusion
Don Badoy realized that he ponders on love that had been wasted. They had shared a
bitter and loveless marriage. He forgot his love to Agueda since that may day eve.

IV. Moral Lesson

The moral lesson of May Day Eve is considered by most to be that marriage should only
be the result of love.

V. Recommendation

May Day Eve is a good story by Nick Joaquin it may help you understand how Pilipinos
fell inlove with each other back from Nick Joaquin’s year of existence . It may also make you
believe to supersticious beliefs like Agueda and Voltaire did.

Ibinatay sa Panahon ng Rebolusyon ng 1896 , ang dulang Walang Sugat ay unang

nailabas sa Teatro Libertad noong 1902. Tungkol ito sa kawalan ng hustisyang tinamasa ng mga
Pilipino noong panahon ng kastila. Ang mga temang gamit nito ay pagmamahalan sa gitna ng
digmaan, sakripisyo, pagkawalay at kontradiksyon ng indibidwal sa pamilya.

III. Plot

Apart from the political themes, Walang Sugat is also a love story. Towards the end of
the Philippine Revolution, Tenyong leaves Julia to become a member of the Katipunan. In his
absence, Julia is continuously pressured by her mother to marry the rich Miguel who is portrayed
as an American; she succumbs when she stopped receiving news from Tenyong. As Julia and
Miguel are being wed, Tenyong arrives to interrupt the service, and is dying of injuries sustained
in combat. Tenyong mentions his dying wish to Julia, but the play features an "unexpected twist"
that shows how Tenyong is able to outwit the persons separating him from Julia, the love of his
life .

IV. Moral Lesson

Ang gintong aral nito, walang sugat ay ang pagpapatawad sa isa na hindi mo ibig
patawarin. Gayundin ang pakikipaglaban natin sa atin mismong karapatan. Dahil ang mga tao ay
malapit sa isa't isa, napakadaling magsalita at makipag-usap tungkol sa mga bagay na hindi
lamang tungkol sa mga ito kundi pati na rin sa iba pang mga tao. At dahil dito ang mga kuwento
ay kumakalat nang higit pa at mas maraming tao. At maaaring hindi ito totoo sa halos lahat ng
oras.

V. Recommendation

I recommend the story Walang Sugat by Severino Reyes to be red by all people
especially Pilipinos that are in a relationship because in this story Tenyong showed Julia that no
matter how hard the circumstances between the two lovers , if you love your partner you will
find a way to get to be with him/her forever even if it will stop you for doing what you want and
what you dream.
