HK-338 conductivity analyzer Preface

Preface

HK-338 conductivity analyzer is the latest on-line instrument manufactured by Beijing Huakeyi
Power Plant Instrument Research Institute. it is the new generation instrument based on the
strong technical advantage of institute, concluded recently ten years field experience of institute,
referenced and adopts foreign advanced technology. It can be widely used in the power plant and
petrochemical fields to mainly monitor the conductivity value of water sample during production
process continuously and has the characteristics of rapid response, accurate measuring and easy
operation. The screen adopts the 192×64 dot LCD, display in Chinese or English, and all operation
and programming are done by 8 touch membrane press keys on the front panel. The programming
function of instrument is protected by a four-bit safety code which can not be changed easily.
The instruction describes the basic condition of the HK-338 conductivity analyzer. From it, the user
will know the basic content of the instrument such as composition, operating principle and
installation and operation regulation etc., so it can have a basic knowledge about the instrument
from the installation to putting into operation. For the place in where problem occurs easily and be
ignored easily during the installation and operation, we give the detailed description and clear
prompt. Read it carefully, it can reduce much unnecessary trouble and nonsense mistake and
make a strong base for the future safe operation and better working of instrument.

Note: it must read the instruction of product before operate the instrument.

HK-338 conductivity analyzer Introduction

Ⅰ. Introduction

The HK-338 conductivity analyzer is consisted of transmitter, conductivity cell, flow cell and cable.
The shell of the analyzer is made of aluminum that is easy for installing.
The analyzer can be electrical calibrated by the simple conductivity calibration box. You can take
one point calibration easily after the initial calibration. There are two channels for conductivity cell
input and temperature input. The temperature of the sample is measured by the internal thermo
meter of Pt1000 when you need the temperature compensation.

2.2.2 Installation method of flow cell

Before installing a electrode, clean the electrode as the follows:
Thoroughly clean the surface of the electrode hole with a nylon brush and a mild detergent
solution. Use 2% diluted hydrochloric acid solution to wash the deposit, then use distilled water to
wash the electrode completely. Observe the reflect light in electrode hole; make sure the water
membrane on inner wall is even, without oil. Pay attention not to wet the electric connection
terminal.

c
Outlet

Installation steps:
d
① make a hole with 13mm diameter
in the panel;
e
② thread the outlet water joint of flow
cell through the hole;
③ Tighten the tighten nut at the other
side;
④ Connect the inlet and outlet pipe.
The inlet is connected to Φ8 hose
(ID) or welded with Φ10 (OD)
stainless steel pipe. The

HK-338 conductivity analyzer Electrical connection

Ⅳ. Electrical connection

4.1 Connection, general rules

¾ Earth(grounding)—— the “G” of terminal block “J1” in power board shall be connected with
the ground of the power supply;
¾ Cable distribution —— the distribution of the cable line shall take the rule of separating
electrode cable, relay cabe and the signal output cable.
¾ Ensure that, when the cable entering the transducer, the passed sealing hole and its
connection terminal shall have a nearest, shortest and most direct connection; and the cable
shall be avoid to be crimpled between the connecting terminals.
¾ Cable hole and wire sleeve —— properly wire sleeves shall be used and the unused cable
hole shall be seal to ensure the damp proofing.
¾ Relay —— the contact of the relay shall be un-active contact and shall be serially connected
with the power source and alarming/controlling equipment to be activated. When the relay is
used for the load switching, refer to the relay contact protection detail rules in 4.2.1 (stated
below) and ensure that the rated value of the contact not be exceeded;
¾ Output —— change the output range of the current and the load shall not be over the rated
value (see the specifications);
4.1.1 Relay contact protection and interference depression
If the relays are used to switch loads on and off, the relay contacts can become eroded due to
arcing. Arcing also generates radio frequency interference (RFI) which can result in instrument
malfunctions and incorrect readings. To minimize the effects of RFI, arc suppression components
are required; resistor/capacitor networks for AC applications or diodes for DC applications. These
components can be connected either across the load or directly across the relay contacts. On HK
Series instruments the RFI components must be fitted to the relay terminal block along with the
supply and load wires.
For AC applications the value of the resistor/capacitor network depends on the load current and
inductance that is switched. Initially, fit a 100R/0.022 F RC suppressor unit as shown in Fig. 4.1A.
If the instrument malfunctions (incorrect readings) or resets the value of the RC network is too low
for suppression an alternative value must be used. If the correct value cannot be obtained, contact
the manufacturer of the switched device for details on the RC unit required.
For DC applications fit a diode as shown in Fig. 4.1B. For general applications use an IN5406
type ( 600V peak inverse voltage at 3A)

Ⅵ. Use of the Instrument

6.1 Start

Note:
1. Before connecting the instrument with main power, you must read the programming section
carefully, and be able to operate the program skillfully.;
2. Be sure that all the connections are correct and reliable..

¾ Pre-treat the electrode, see the section 2.2.2.

¾ Switch on the power supply; display the conductivity measuring interface.
¾ Do programming and set parameters according to actual needs.
¾ Regulate the flow rate of inlet sample water (less than 6L/h) to ensure sample water of
smooth flow, free of air bubble.
¾ After starting up and debugging the analyzer or idle for a long time, this work may take several
hours.
¾ Keep running about 2 hours or longer if the condition allows.

6.2 Calibration (automatic judge stable state is enabled)

After the instrument working becomes stable, the instrument may be subject to conductivity low
range calibration, conductivity high range calibration, sample calibration, temperature calibration,
output current calibration, and electrical calibration, in which conductivity calibration, temperature
calibration, output current calibration and electrical calibration have been done before the
instrument leaving factory, so users do not have to carry out these items of calibration.
6.2.1 Low range electric calibration
The instrument is electrical calibrated by the Company prior to dispatch, and it is not necessary for
the user to carry out electrical calibration.
Use the simple cal resistor box to take the low range electric calibration. There are two points
calibration that you can take one point calibration or two points. Taking one point calibration to
modify the internal saving curve and the two points calibration to establish an original curve about
the value of the resistance and the conductivity. During the normal measuring, the resistance
value of the sample displays as the value of the conductivity through the original curve after the
temperature compensation at 25℃.

In sample calibration, the solution under measurement is assumed as the standard value. Since
no standard solution is needed, and the normal measurement process is not influenced, such
sample calibration can greatly save the time for calibration, being simple and quick. Nevertheless,
the user must know clearly the right conductivity value of on-line water sample, or serious error

HK-338 conductivity analyzer Maintenance

Ⅶ. Maintenance

7.1 Shut down and start

When sample water flow stops for more than 5 days, the following steps shall be taken.
Shut-down:
1. Switch off the inlet valve to instrument;
2. Power off supply;

Start:
1. Take the conductivity electrode form the flow cell and wipe off the dirty on the conductive
electrode by the clean silk or lens wiping paper, then wash it by the clean water;
2. Feed water to instrument again, and readjust pressure and flow if necessary.

7.2 Regular maintenance

Weekly:
1. Check whether sample water flow is normal, <6L/hr;
2. Check whether there is any leakage with instrument, if any, find out the reason and tighten or
replace sealing element in time.
3. Check whether electrical system has normal display, whether pH value of display is
reasonable.

Monthly:
1. Use soft tissue to clean conductivity electrode.
2. Switch on water flow, check if any leakage;
3. Readjust the flow rate if necessary.

Annually:
1. Wash the deposit in the flow cell by the neutral cleaning agent;
2. Carry out a calibration (refer to calibration section).
