Summer Granny Squares Beach

Cover Up Dress
M AY 2 4 , 2 0 1 8

I can’t wait to wear on the sea side this Summer

Granny Squares Beach Cover Up Dress.

I enjoyed making this dress and have to be honest, is

the first piece of garment that I made with squares.

this pattern here.

I would say that this dress is easy to make. The

squares are only 4 rows and you join them as you go.
Work in only one piece, no sewing.

Last week I posted the Summer Granny Square ,but I

will repeat the pattern here too, just to have all
information in one single place.

This pattern is for sizes S, M and L.

I used mercerized cotton size 5 ( I know from you

after summer crocheted vest, that is a little difficult
to find, but you can use any cotton thread if you get
to the same size of the square), the green one and a
simple cotton the white one.

D.M.C Petra Crochet Thread was the most similar

that I founded with the green one. I have this thread
from Romania, from a local store.

The white one is called Durable Glan Cotton 8 and is

a vintage cotton thread.

I used 2.5 mm crochet hook ( B 1/2)

One square has in diagonal 11 cm.

Abbreviations used in this pattern

Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Dc – double crochet
dc2tog – 2 dc cluster
dc3tog – 3 dc cluster
dc 4 tog – 4 dc cluster
St(s) – stitch(es)

Special stitches:

Cluster

A group of 2, 3 or 4 dc worked together.

Yarn over, insert the hook into the 1st st, yarn over
pull out a loop, yarn over, pull the yarn trough the
first 2 loops. Repeat 2, 3 or 4 times as pattern
requires. Yarn over and pull the yarn trough all loops
on your hook.

Now that we know all these, let’s start.

Round 1

Make a magic ring and ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, [4 dc, ch 3] –

repeat the [ ] 3 times, to the end of the row. Sl st
with the 3rd st of the starting ch. Pull the yarn to
close the ring.

Round 2
Ch 3, dc3tog on the top of the 3 dc from the previous
round, ch 3.

Corner ( in the 3 ch space from the previous round):

dc 2 tog, ch 3, dc 2 tog, ch 3

[ dc4tog, ch 3, (dc 2 tog, ch 3, dc 2 tog, ch 3) –

corner] – repeat 2 more times to the end of the
round. Sl st with the 3rd st of the starting ch.

Round 3

Ch 1, 1 sc in the next st (the joining st of the cluster

from the previous round), ch 3

Corner

[dc2tog, ch 3] – repeat 3 more times (4 dc2tog in

total)

[1 sc in the next st, ch 3, [dc2 tog, ch 3] 4 times]

repeat 2 more times to the end of the round. Sl st
with the ch 1 from beginning.

Round 4

Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st. Ch 5, 1 sc in the next 3 ch

space, ch 5.

Corner: 1 sc in the next ch 3 space, ch 5, 1 sc in the

next space, ch 7, 1 sc in the same space, ch 5, 1 sc in
the next space.

[(Ch 5, 1 sc in the next space)× 2, ch 5, *corner] × 3

times, ch 5, sl st with the ch 1 at the beginning.
Now let’s see how we will join the squares. We will
call first square A and second one B.

Make the first 3 rounds of the square B. Begin the

round 4 but only until you get to the corner. In the 3
chain space from the corner chain 3 (instead of 7).

Grab the square A, and join B with A corner with 1 sc

( make sure that A is on the wrong side).

Ch 3 and 1 sc in the same 3 ch space from the corner

of B.

Ch 2 and join with one sc with the next ch 3 apace of

the A.

Ch 2, 1 sc in the next 3 ch space of the B.

And continue like this until the next corner. On the

corners proceed the same as on the first corner:

Ch 3, join with one sc with the corner of the A. Ch 3, 1

sc in the same ch 3 space of the B.
After you finish joining continue the 4th row on B as
usual.

Now that we know how to make the squares and how

to join them, is time for the dress.

First, these are the sketches for the sizes S, M and L.

Here on size M you can let the blue squares of the

top or of you feel that the brace will be to close you
can remove them.
We will begin from the top and join the squares as
you see in the pictures above. Join the squares for
front and back and then just continue adding squares
until you get to the desires length.

You can purchase the easy printable pdf version of

this pattern here.

After getting to the desired length make the brace.

Start from one up corner and chain 60 ( or the

number of stitches that you need), then join the
chain with the opposite corner.

Work on one side of the chain: 1 sc in the first 5 sts, 1

picot (ch 3, join with a sl st with the last sc you’ve
made). Repeat to the end of the row.

Turn on the other side of the chain and work the

same.

To finish the summer granny square beach cover up

dress, add a border in sc. Make the same number of
sc as the ch sts that space have ( 5 sc more often).
And this was it. The beach cover up dress is ready for
sun and sand .

this pattern here.

On second week of June I’ll be in vacation and I will

send you more pictures with a proper background
.

Bellow, as usual you can find the video tutorial on

how you can make this dress.
Hope you liked this pattern too and can wait to share
more with you.
