For the APU, there is just one fire extinguisher bottle and only one discharge
P/B.
The guarded FIRE P/B switches provide fire indication and the means to
isolate the corresponding system.
The TEST buttons are used to test the respective fire detection and
extinguishing system operation.

In addition to the indications on the FIRE panel, you have a FIRE light for
each engine on the ENG panel located on the pedestal.
These lights help identify which engine is on fire.

There is an additional FIRE light for the APU and a guarded APU SHUT OFF
P/B located on the external power panel.
Avionics
For the avionics system only smoke detection is provided. Its detector is
located in the air extraction duct.
The indications for avionics smoke are located on two panels in the cockpit:
- the EMER ELEC PWR panel,
- the VENTILATION panel.

SDF
On the A318 SDCU is replaced by the Smoke Detection Function (SDF) which
is integrated in the CIDS.
SDCU (A319/A320/A321)
OR CIDS SDF (A318)
The two guarded DISCH P/B switches control one fire bottle.
Each P/B SW controls one squib or discharge head of the bottle.
When pushed, the fire bottle is completely emptied in the respective
compartment.
The fire extinguishing agent is discharged either via one nozzle into the FWD
compartment or two nozzles into the AFT compartment.
Finally, there are portable fire extinguishers in the cockpit and the cabin.
Number, type and locations depend on the different customer lay-outs.

UNIT
(SDCU)
The three Fire Detection Units (FDUs) are located in zone 127.
Engine fire detection comprises one FDU per engine and the APU fire
detection comprises one FDU for the APU.
The Avionics Equipment Ventilation Computer (AEVC) is located in Zone
128, on shelf 88 VU in the aft electronics rack 80 VU.
The Smoke Detection Control Unit (SDCU) is located in zone 122.
There is just one SDCU which supervises smoke detectors installed in the
cargo compartment and in the lavatory.

CIDS DIRECTORs
(SMOKE DETECTION FUNCTION)
On the A318 the SDF is performed by two CIDS Directors which are located
in zone 127 on the aft electronics rack 80 VU.
The two CIDS Director SDFs supervise smoke detectors installed in the cargo
compartment and in the lavatory.

When you work on aircraft, make sure that you obey all the AMM safety
procedures. This will prevent injury to persons and /or damage to the aircraft.
Here is an overview of main safety precautions relative to the fire protection
system.
Do not try to open or repair the smoke detectors, the detector contains
radioactive substances. Only workshops authorized by the manufacturer can do
work on the smoke detectors.
Be very careful when you move a filled fire extinguisher bottle a heavy shock
could cause percussion.
Do not touch the frangible disc inside the fire extinguisher bottle unless it is
broken (cartridge fired). You could damage the frangible disc or break it.
The accidental firing of the extinguisher bottle can cause serious injury to
persons who work or are in the close proximity.
If you remove the fire extinguisher bottles in a closed hangar, make sure that
there is a flow of new air in the hangar.
The cartridge is an explosive device. To prevent explosion of the cartridge
install the applicable protective device. This will protect the electrical
connector of the cartridge. Do not use a foil shunt.
Make sure that the maximum permitted life of the cartridge is longer than the
time to the next scheduled inspection.
Do not remove/install the discharge head with the cartridge installed. You must
always remove and install the discharge head in a workshop and never on the
aircraft.
