Technology and Manpower: Why it Should Coexist in Harmony

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) technology is known around the world to have more

efficiency and accuracy in performing their tasks more so than the human workforce. According

to Schwab (2018), nearly 50% of companies expect that automation will lead to some reduction

in their full-time workforce by 2020 with A.I. technology as its top features. This has created

arguments as to which is to use better in the manufacturing field: the human workforce or

artificial intelligence? There are several studies that discuss these comparisons and after

reviewing different accounts, using both the machines equipped with either A.I. technology or

human intelligence to mainly supervise and overlook the entire process can and will still give

quality results.

The use of A.I. technology machinery provides better monitoring, quality control, and

fault detection and isolation which could be easily overlooked by humans. There are, however,

certain problems which require critical thinking and decision-making that no machinery could

solve. Another problem would be its economic impact. Although finances are not a problem to

big companies, it is a problem to its employees especially in countries like the Philippines.

Szczepanski (2019) states that:

The use of A.I. technology could also widen the gap between developing and more

developed countries, and boost the need for workers with certain skills while rendering

others redundant; this latter trend could have far-reaching consequences for the labour

market. Experts also warn of its potential to increase inequality, push down wages, and

shrink the tax base. (para. 3)

Both options would always have its benefits and liabilities. A.I. technology could produce a

product with better quality that the human workforce could never match while man could think

critically and decide in a way that the programmers of A.I. technology still have not developed.

A negative result in one aspect is still present in both options.

To solve this, coexistence of manpower and A.I. technology is suggested to solve the

different problems each option could give. A recent survey conducted by Simpler Media Group,

Inc. (2018) states that:

845 senior executives in various industries, including healthcare, financial services, retail

and others were conducted. Of those respondents, 69 per cent of the executives polled

said that they expect automating manual and mundane processes will play a significant

role in enabling human staffers to handle much more varied duties. The survey concluded

that these technologies can be deployed for tasks such as scheduling, task allocation,

work coordination and routing, intelligent escalations and quality control, as well as

matching agents with customers. A human and a machine capable of providing timely,

relevant customer data can be a potent combination. (para. 8)

What this tells us is that it’s not an either/or situation when it comes to machines and people —

both can work together to help each other.

The use of either manpower or A.I. technology in the workplace, as stated above, both

have benefits and liabilities. They can have an impact on the quality of the product, the economy

of the industry and many others but the coexistence of these two different approaches can

actually be productive and still give the results desired without the problems of using or choosing

between the use of manpower and A.I. technology.
