In a span of 6 years, Svatantra Microfin Pvt. Ltd., led by Ms. Ananya Birla has emerged as a large systemically
important NBFC-MFI in India. Svatantra Microfin (SVMF) is a rural focused microfinance institution which

of SVMF’s business mantra, contributing towards a unique and inclusive platform for its rural customers. As

CURRENT SCENARIO

In order to leverage the reach, technology and customer goodwill, Ms. Ananya Birla, Chairperson, Svatantra
Microfin Pvt. Ltd. desires to evaluate newer products besides micro-credit, which can create an even larger
impact in the life of India’s financially excluded customers. The central idea remains to continue the journey
towards a diversified bouquet of financial services and eventually metamorphose into a bank.

Based on the current growth trajectory, the company can achieve GLP of over INR. 3000 cores by 2021 and
reach out to more than 10 lakh customers across 12 to 15 states.

Ms. Birla has asked her management team to evaluate a set of impactful products, which may be offered to
customers in ’a financially excluded and informal segment’. She has requested the team for the following
insights in diversification:

 What are such impactful products and how do we prioritize?

 Which are the synergies that can be leveraged for the chosen product diversification?
 What are key bottlenecks and the best approach towards diversification?
 How would the entity look like in terms of size and financial over the next 3 years, if we decide
to select one or two options for diversification?
 Suggestions should be financially sustainable

The management team acknowledges the vision and has formed a task force of 4 members to design an
executable diversification strategy / model highlighting newer possibilities, feasibility, cost-benefit analysis,
risks and challenges within the regulatory framework. Additionally, management has suggested the task
force to assess the risks involved with such a proposition.
