Technology and Humanism

• With just a touch of a keyboard and a click of a
mouse you can have thousands of useful links or
sources for a topic searched on the Internet
• Technology came from the Greek word
“teknologia” meaning systematic treatment or
craft
• Technology is concerned with ways to improve
life

Technology and Humanism

• The field of education is not an exemption to the
wonders of technology, some examples of this
are:
▫ Computers
▫ Digital cameras
▫ LCD Projectors
▫ Chalkboard / whiteboard
▫ Etc.

Technology and Humanism

• A dilemma in the advancement of technology
▫ While there is overdependence of life in the
advanced industrial countries on technology, there
is a threat that the same technology will destroy
the quality of life in modern society and endanger
society itself

Technology and Humanism

• Here are some sample situations that can be
harmful in the advancement of technology:
• Automobiles have resulted to faster transportation,
but it also resulted to many accidents
• Jobs in highly technological industries require
complex skills. People without these skills are put
out of work and left to do basic works
• Other changes in technology have produced hazards
to the environment
• The Internet has been a venue for crimes

Technology and Humanism

• As educators, the classroom is a potential place
where technology and the issue of humanism
could cross
• Some observers have argued that the widespread
use of media in the classroom leads to teachers
treating students like machines rather than
human beings

Technology and Humanism

• If teachers will not consider students’ opinions,
then this is a dehumanizing act.
• If the learner’s needs and abilities are not
considered in the instructional plan, the teacher
does not consider learners as human beings who
should be the main focus

Technology and Humanism

• To simply put it, media provides multi-sensory
experiences to learners, which adds to their
enjoyment of the subject, in other cases it
individualizes learning thus media humanizes
the instruction
• Technology in the teaching-learning process
should be a means for the teacher to bring out
the best in the students
