CHAPTER I

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the correlation between sleep quality and the

visual short-term memory of grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM) students in Technological Institute of the Philippines-

Quezon City.

Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the sleep quality of the respondents in terms of the following:

1.1 Time of going to bed?
1.2 No. of minutes to fall asleep each night?
1.3 Time of getting up from the bed in the morning?
1.4 No. of hours of actual sleep at night?
2. What is the condition of the short-term memory of the respondents:
2.1 Ability of the short-term memory to remember more/less elements?
2.2 Duration/ amount of time to remember a sequence of digits?
3. What is the correlation between varying sleep quality and the visual short-

term memory of Grade 11 STEM students in TIP- QC?

Significance of the Study

The study aims to determine the correlation of sleep quality to the visual

short-term memory loss of Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM) students of Technological Institute of the Philippines,

Quezon City.

The study will benefit the following people:

Students, the study will determine the proper quality of sleep they need to reach

their optimal capacity in the academic field. Also, it will help them recognize how

visual short-term memory significantly affects their academic performance and

how it plays a vital role in retaining information they saw or read during

discussions or activities.

Workers, Most jobs and careers also require an appropriate level of visual short-

term memory. The given data will determine the proper quality of sleep they need

to effectively remember words in reading or writing a report in order to

appropriately give its context, especially Architects, Designers and Painters

because the more visual the job, the more necessary it is this cognitive ability will

be.

Parents, the study will help them encourage themselves and their children to

have sufficient time of sleep in order to have an effective visual short term

memory that could help them in their everyday lives.

Future researchers, the results presented in this study may be used as a

reference data in conducting a research about the correlation of sleep quality to

visual short-term memory.

Scope and Delimitation

In this study, the researchers will be conducting a study primarily to

determine the correlation of sleep quality to visual short-term memory. It focuses

on how the quality of sleep affects a person’s visual short-term memory. It

covers fifty (50) Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM) students inTechnological Institute of the Philippine- Quezon City to be

chosen by random sampling.

The conduct of the study is delimited on the availability of real data

provided by the respondents upon answering assessments regarding their sleep

quality and visual short-term memory. The respondents will answer a

questionnaire to help them assess the status of their visual short-term memory

depending on their sleep quality for the past month. It is also delimited with a

group of grade 11 students in TIP-QC and a time frame of three (3) months in

which the researchers will conduct their research in order to get the results of the

correlation of sleep quality and the visual short-term memory.
