PAPER 1
TIME: 2½ HOURS
INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATE’S:
1. Write your name, index number and school in the spaces provided at the top of this page.
2. Sign and write the date of examination in spaces provided above.
3. This paper consists of two Sections; Section I and Section II.
4. Answer all the questions in Section I and any FIVE questions from Section II.
5. All answers and working must be written on the question paper in the spaces provided
below each question.
6. Show all the steps in your calculation, giving your answer at each stage in the spaces
provided below each question.
7. Marks may be given for correct working even if the answer is wrong.
8. Non-programmable silent electronic calculators and KNEC Mathematical tables
may be used, except where stated otherwise.
9. Candidates should check the question paper to ascertain that all the pages are printed
as indicated and that no questions are missing.

2. A farmer has two water tanks, one of capacity 200 litres and the other 360 litres. The farmer uses
the same container to fill each of the two tanks in an exact number of times. Find the least
possible number of times it would take to fill both tanks. (3mks)
3. The size of an interior angle of a reqular polygon is 3 ½ times that of its exterior angle. Determine
the sum of the interior angles of this polygon. (4mks)
4. A solid metal pyramid has a square abase of side 3 cm and a mass of 54kg. Find the mass of a
similar pyramid whose base is a square of side 6 cm. (3mks)
(b) Find to one decimal place the length of the perpendicular from A to BC. (2mks)

8. The position vectors of P and Q with respect to the origin respectively. Point T lies on

PQ such that 3PT = PQ. Determine the coordinates of T. (3mks)
(ii) A point X is equivalent from lines AC and A B and AX = BX. Locate X. (2mks)

12. An open cylindrical concrete water tank has an external diameter of 1.2m and an external height
of 1.5m. The thickness of the concrete is 8cm. Calculate the volume of the concrete is 8cm.
Calculate the volume of the concrete making the tank. Give your answer in m3. (4mks)
14. On a market day, Amina bought 2 bags of potatoes and 3 bags of carrots at a total cost of sh.
3,450. Wanja bought 3 bags of potatoes and 2 bags of carrots but paid sh. 150 less than Amina.
Find the cost of 1 bag of each item. (3mks)
15. Find the reciprocal of 2.095 using the tables of reciprocals. (1mk)

Hence evaluate without using mathematical tables or calculator. (1mk)

(b) In the following month, the rate of commission was changed to x% but his monthly salary
remained the same. If Mr. Kamau received a total monthly earning of sh. 100,000 for
selling goods worth the same amount, find the value of x. (3mks)
(c) If the rate of commission in (b) above was reduced in the ration 3:4 and his monthly
increased by 10%, find the percentage change in his total monthly earnings for selling the
same amount of goods. (4mks)
(c) On the grid below, draw a histogram to represent the above information. (4mks)

cost of ten lampshades if a lampshade is sold at twice the cost of the material. (3mks)

(a) Using a scale of 1 cm to represent 100km, draw a diagram to show the positions of the
aeroplanes after 45 minutes. (4mks)

(c) By further construction on the same diagram determine how far Q is to east of P. (3mks)
(a) Using he trapezoidal rule with six strips estimate the area bounded by the curve, the x-axis
and the lines x = -2 and x = 4. (4mks)
(c) Assuming the area found by integration is exact, calculate the percentage error in using the
trapezoidal rule. (2mks)
