--- MicroBest Cracklock ---

--- Version 3.0 ---

--- for Windows 95/98/NT ---

--- English - 32 bits ---

--- Last revision: 08/02/98 ---

OVERVIEW
========

Cracklock is a utility which corrects a frequent bug that appears in a lot of

sharewares : I've recently noticed that many sharewares seem to stop working after
a limited period of time, frequently a 30 days period. This bug is so frequent that
I use to call it "the 30ieth day virus"

Thanks to CrackLock : no more problem !

With this utility, you can assign a date, a time and some options to every program
that runs under Windows 95/NT 4.0. After that, no matter the actual day or time :
these programs are bluffed and they believe to be at the dummy date/time you have
assigned. The bug is bypassed, and your sharewares keep working without any period
limit.

CRACKLOCK IS FREEWARE : YOU'RE FREE TO DISTRIBUTE IT.

Cracklock is developed with Visual C++ 5.0.

INSTALLATION
============

Unzip the file containing installation files in any directory, except with path
including long file names (due to a Win95 bug).
In the explorer, right-click on CKLOCK.INF, then choose "Install" in the context
menu.

REMARK : If you have installed Cracklock 1.x or 2.x, you must first restore all
programs modified by the old version, uninstall the old version and then reinstall
the new version.
(Next version of Cracklock will include a setup program which will be able to
convert old repaired programs.)

HOW TO ACTIVE CRACKLOCK ON A SPECIFIC WINDOWS 95 EXECUTABLE FILE :

==================================================================
*** Actually Cracklock is not able to repair 16 bits programs (for Windows 3.1),
***
*** it acts only on Windows 95/NT executables files (with extensions EXE).
***

Go into the explorer, right-click on the executable file icon and choose
"Properties...", then select the "MicroBest
Cracklock" properties sheet and you will see a dialog box similar to the Windows 95
Date/Time control panel applet one.

Check the box called "Activate Cracklock" to activate Cracklock for the application
you have selected.

Now, you can select the date and the time you want to apply to this application
with the calendar and the clock.

You can active three options :

1. "Hard method"

When this option is selected, Cracklock acts as you can do manually : When you run
the application, Cracklock sets the system date/time to the selected date/time.
When the program ends, Cracklock reset the real system date/time.
This happend each time you run and exit the program.
Currently, there is no reason to use this option because it isn't powerful.

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE THIS OPTION BECAUSE ALL YOUR SYSTEM IS CONCERNED, NOT ONLY
THE PROGRAM ENVIRONMENT SO YOU CANNOT RUN SEVERAL PROGRAMS REPAIRED WITH THIS
OPTION AT THE SAME TIME (THEY WILL INTERFER).

2. "Constant Date/Time"

This option makes the application running always at the same date/time.
For exemple, if you assign 0:0:0 09/22/1981 for this app, each time the program
wants to know the date/time, Cracklock will return 10:00:00 09/22/1981. 10 minutes
later it will also return 10:00:00 09/22/1981.

When this option is not selected, at the start of the application Cracklock will
returns 10:0:0 09/22/1981. 10 minutes later it will return 10:10:0 09/22/1981.

Once you have set-up your program for Cracklock, you probably want to run the
program, there are three ways you can load application with Cracklock :

3. "This program is loaded by MCL (Microbest Cracklock Loader)

* When this option is not selected, Cracklock modifies a file used by your
application so the application will be entirely repaired. By default Cracklock
choose automatically which file to modify, but you can select a different one in
the "Dependencies" dialog box (To access this dialog box, click on the
"Dependencies..." button).

This method let you run "Cracklocked" programs as usually (from command prompt,
file manager or explorer...). It's currently the easiest loading mode but not the
powerfull (some applications doesn't support it).

* When this option is selected. Cracklock doesn't modify any file on the hard disk
BUT to get your application running, you must load it with a special "loader".
Cracklock comes with a loader called MCL (MicroBest Cracklock Loader).

You can start MCL (MCL.EXE) (from the command prompt or from the explorer) :

If you run the following command,

MCL C:\APP\APP.EXE

(where C:\APP\APP.EXE is the path to your program's executable file), the loader
will load the app C:\APP\APP.EXE as if you type directly "C:\APP\APP.EXE" but the
application will load under the control of Cracklock. If you don't specify an
executable file, MCL will let you select among a list of all applications you have
set-up for Cracklock.

With Cracklock, you can run as many date-corrected applications as you want.

TEST
====

You can try Cracklock on two examples, in the folder called "examples", which show
you the system date/time :

VCDATE.EXE DigClock program from Charles Petzold's book "Programming Windows 95"
(Microsoft Press)
(written in Visual C++)

VBDATE.EXE (written in Visual Basic 5.0)

HOW TO UNINSTALL
=================

In the control panel, choose "Add/Remove Programs", select "MicroBest Cracklock" in

the list of programs and click on "Add/Remove".

KNOWN BUGS
==========

* Under Windows NT 4.0 Cracklock is not able to modify system DLLs such as
MSVCRT.DLL
* Cracklock 3.0 is not able to translate old 1.0 and 2.0 repaired programs into new
3.0 repaired programs

RESPONSIBILITY
==============

CAUTION : I'll take no responsibility on the use or consequences of the use of

Cracklock.
