To interpret the level of awareness on impact of the ineffective management of solid waste, the scale
below was used:
A. Environmental Impact
1. Improper solid waste management contaminates environment.
2. Unsegregated dumping of waste causes serious environmental damage.
3. Throwing and littering of waste is a serious environmental problem in Municipal limits.
4. The very existence of certain species is seriously endangered by environmental pollution through
improper solid waste management.
5. Over packaging, disposable/ use and throw products and use of plastic carry bags and one used
plastic bottles degrades environment.
6. Improper management of hazardous waste at domestic level and commercial level is another
dangerous environmental pollutant.
7. Improperly handled slaughter house waste seriously pollutes environment.
8. Construction and demolition waste (debris) is a major source of solid waste damaging
environment.
B. Air Pollution
1. Plastic cannot be destroyed by burning.
2. Burning waste pollutes air.
3. Decomposition of organic waste also pollutes air.
C. Water Pollution
1. Burial of waste contaminates surface and ground water.
2. Throwing waste in street or water bodies pollutes environment.
3. The leachate (chemical) flowing from the dumping yard contaminates surface water, ground water
and pollutes nearby wells, rivers and ponds.
D. Noise Pollution
1. The movement of waste carrying trucks make noise pollution.
2. The noise made by machines like shredding machine, backhoe etc. at landfill sites and community
composting plants make noise pollution.
E. Health Hazards
1. Throwing waste leads to unsanitary conditions and clogging of drain which eventually resulting in
health hazards.
2. Improper management of solid waste is responsible for epidemic like Chikungunya, Dengue etc.
3. Rodents, animals and birds scavenging through waste dumps spread diseases.
4. People near waste dumps and landfills are suffering from respiratory problems, eye diseases and
water borne diseases.
AWARENESS AND PRACTICES ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AMONG STUDENTS
To interpret the level of awareness on solid waste management of the students, the scale below was
used:
3.25 - 4.00 Very High
2.50 - 3.24 High
1.75 - 2.49 Low
1.00 - 1.74 Very Low
4-Always
3-Often
2-Seldom
1-Never
To interpret the solid waste management practices, the scale below was used:
3.25 - 4.00 Very Good
2.50 - 3.24 Good
1.75 - 2.49 Fair
1.00 - 1.74 Poor
A. SEGREGATION
1. I segregate biodegradable (paper, banana peels, cardboard, and vegetables) and non-
biodegradable (plastic toys, glass, steel, rubber) wastes at school.
2. I separate recyclable wastes (paper, cardboard, plastic bottles) from non-recyclable (food wastes,
leaves, twigs) wastes at school.
3. I separate non-harmful wastes from toxic and hazardous wastes such as pentel pens, laboratory
chemicals, ink, cell batteries and others.
4. I mix all the garbage in one garbage container.
5. I segregate recyclable items for collection.
B. REDUCE
1. I borrow, share, and/or rent things that are needed occasionally.
2. I buy only what I need so that I will not end up throwing away extra food.
3. I pack my lunch in reusable lunchbox so that I can’t buy wrapped/packed food at the school.
4. I bring water in reusable water bottles than buying water in one used plastic bottles at the school.
5. I am cautious and responsible to every waste I produced.
C. REUSE
1. I reuse my old materials than buying a new one.
2. I keep those unfilled papers and used it as scratch.
3. I reuse grocery bags.
4. I reuse washable food containers.
5. I reuse scrap paper into memo pads.
D. RECYCLE
1. I convert or redesign waste materials into a new product.
2. I make decors out of plastic wrappers and other colorful waste materials.
3. I ignore the importance of recycling.
4. I initiate generating-income out of waste materials.
E. DISPOSAL
1. I throw and left my garbage anywhere.
2. I burn waste materials.
3. I throw waste materials in common open dumps.
4. I dispose biodegradable wastes into a compost pit.
5. I dispose hazardous/toxic/special wastes such as laboratory leftover (chemicals) or electronic
waste in any garbage container.
