Introduction

Background of the Study

The Philippines is recognized globally as one of the largest English

speaking nation with the majority of its population having at least some

degree of fluency in the language. English has always been one of the

country's official languages and is spoken by more than 14 million Filipinos.

It is the language of commerce and law as well as the primary medium of

instruction learner's experiences of speaking English as a second language.

Filipinos have quite different perspectives toward certain things that

they do not consider as appealing or important. The point here is, if there

are quite the numbers of Filipinos like these, some will have problems in

doing things that are quite unaccepted by others. Like how the SPED FL

student faces challenges especially in the Speaking of the English

language. Whenever they start talking in a different language like English,

other students present comments that gives negative impact in the minds

of the SPED FL students. They also tend to criticize some SPED FL students

as they talk in English that they should just speak our own language rather
than speak in English since we live in the Philippines not other country like

America.

SPED FL Class is a special class in Basilan National High School which

focuses in English. Two elective subjects in the Seventh, Eight, and Ninth

Grade and one on the Tenth Grade, Creative Writing & Public Speaking,

Computer & Journalism, Debate & Technical Writing, and Research

respectively.

These things keep the SPED FL students from focusing on what should

be done and these gives rise to another whole set of problems for the

special education class students as well as other involve people/person.

Thus, to help these students with their problems, the teacher must help

them overcome these challenges, help them in managing interactions,

enhance their speaking skills, and improve their grammar.

As a concerned researcher, this research was made to know the

Insights\Impression of other SPED FL students of different grade level of

this particular institution in speaking the English Language

Statement of the Problem

The study will answer the main question: What are the Impressions

and Insight of the Students of Basilan National High School in Speaking the

English Language? Why do they say so? What are the suitable things to

do? The following sub-questions arise from the main question;

1. What are the common insights of the SPED FL Students in speaking

the English language?

2. What is the least reaction of the students when they are asked to

speak the English language if they are grouped according to age?

3. What about if they are grouped according to grade level?

4. Are there any significant things that are embedded in their mind

while speaking the English Language?

Significance of the Study

This research will be beneficial to teachers, students, researchers,

and to the society. It will be beneficial to the teacher since it will help them

understand the difficulties and properly adjust according to the needs of

the student. Students of course, it could help them adjust their mindset

and overcome difficulties included in this research paper if such

circumstances arise. Researcher as everyone know the value of this to

them because it would enable them to enrich their knowledge if they

intended to work in the same field of information and better understand

their studies. At the same time this study may lend support to some

findings of their studies. And lastly to the society, it could help them

understand why are this particular sets of students are reacting in such a

way.

Limitations of the Study

The study will deal and discuss “The Insights of SPED FL Students in

Speaking the English Language and what the possible solutions to the

encountered problems are”. The study was applied and carried out in

Basilan National High School, Isabela City, Basilan Province. Being carried

out during class sessions in Research in the year 2018 and was conducted

solely for the students of the SPED FL Class.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Literature Review

What is speaking? “Speaking” is the delivery of language through the

mouth. To speak, we create sounds using many parts of our body,

including lungs, vocal tract, tongue, teeth, and lips. Speaking is the second

of the four, which are 1-Listening, 2-Speaking, 3-Reading, 4-Skill that we

learn. This vocalized form of language usually requires at least one listener.

(Mosaddaq Yahya 2013)

English is a West Germanic language that was first spoken in early

medieval England and is now a global lingua franca. Named after the

Angles, one of the Germanic tribes that migrated to the area of Britain that

would later take their name, England, both names ultimately deriving from

the Anglia peninsula in the Baltic Sea. It is closely related to the Frisian

languages, but its vocabulary has been significantly influenced by other

Germanic languages, particularly Norse (a North Germanic language), as

well as by Latin and French.

The use of English as a second language (ESL) or foreign language

(EFL) in oral communication is, without a doubt, one f the most common
but highly complex activities necessary to be considered when teaching the

English language especially because we live at a time where the ability to

speak English fluently has become a must, specially who want to advance

in certain fields of human endeavor.(Al-Sibai, 2014, p.3)

Independent Variables Dependent Variable

A. Personal Factor *Insights of students in

*Gender speaking the English language

B. School Factor *Skills

*Grade Level *Reactions

Hypothesis

Probably, the least reaction they would get if they are asked to speak

in English is that they will argue to the person who asked. Another thing is

that if they are being criticized by others, they will probably ignore this

criticism and embedding it to their mind that there is nothing to be

embarrassed of.
Assumptions

1. The participant will answer he interview question in a honest and

candid manner.

2. The inclusion criteria of the sample are appropriate and therefore,

assures that the participant have all experienced the same or similar

phenomenon of the study

3. Participants will have a sincere interest in participating our

research and do not think of any other motives, such as getting a better

grade in a certain subject or impressing other student.

4. The solutions presented by the study will be of help to the

corresponding individuals.

Definition of Terms:

a science or art

*Reaction- response to a particular situation or event.

*Skills- the ability to do something well

Chapter III

Research Methodology

The method of research we are using is called Descriptive Research.

Descriptive research is a fact-finding with adequate interpretation. It focus

is on prevailing conditions, or how a person or group behaves in the

present.

Population and Sample

Agate- 37 students with 5 boys and 32 girls

Acacia- 39 students with 12 boys and 27 girls
Adelfa- 41 students with 18 boys and 23 girls

Grade Level Number Percentage% Sample

(Section)
Agate 37 27 10
Acacia 39 25 10
Adelfa 41 24 10
Total=30
Gender Number Percentage% Sample
Male 35 44 15
Female 82 19 15

Total=30
The type of sampling we are using is Stratified type in an Optimum

Allocation, wherein we select from every sampling unit but the unit is

directly proportional to variability within strata as well as their size. With

this we can assure the decrease of failing but the only downfall is that it

requires knowledge of variability of pertinent characteristics within strata.

Moving on, the way or the procedure we gather our data is in a

structured questionnaire method using a Yes or No type format. Yes or No

type format is a number of questions that could be answer by either yes or

no. With this type of gathering it is going to be easier to manage the data

later on and we wouldn`t need to trouble the respondents to create their

own answers.

Concerning the measurement of Validity of the test, we are using

Face Validity so that we can easily determine if it is adequate to be a

representative of a behavior trait being measured.
