STABILITY ANALYSIS USING POWER WORLD

SIMULATOR
ABSTRACT: ‐
In case of a power system, it is very important to analyze the stability of the system under
different fault conditions. Equal area criterion is used for the study of stability analysis. It helps
to figure it out that for how much time if a particular fault remains on the system then system
will go towards instability. In this lab, stability analysis was performed on the given system using
the power world simulator.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM: ‐

Figure 1: Circuit Diagram

The parameters of all the generators and transmission lines were set according to those given in
the lab manual.

TASK 1: ‐
The Transient stability was run for the above circuit and the result obtained is given below.

TASK 2: ‐
The Damping factor D=1.000 was put in the generator parameters. Transient stability was again
run for the above circuit and the result obtained is given below.

TASK 3: ‐
Then we un-check the “ignore speed effects in generator swing equation” in option tab of
transient stability and recorded the results. The results are given below.

TASK 4: ‐
Then we found the critical clearing time. The time was found by reducing the time using binary
search method.
tc(exp) = 0.1922s (1)

Then we calculated the time manually using the equation given below:

(2)

tc(calc) = 0.1917s (3)

TASK 5: ‐
The fault type was changed from 3phase to Single Line to Ground. The result of transient stability
is shown below.

OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS: ‐

o In case of original analysis, we see that since no damping factor is applied the oscillations
will continue indefinitely and the system goes to stability after a very long time. (Figure 2)
o After a Damping Factor of 1.000 is applied, the oscillations began to damp slowly and the
stability is reached quickly.(Figure 3)
o Then we ignored the speed effects, now the critical fault clearing time will be affected but
that effect is not really visible in our obtained result. (Figure 4)
o There is a slight difference between the observed and calculated critical time because
many factors are not included in calculations.
o Once the fault is changed from 3Phase Balanced to Single Line to ground, the system no
longer becomes unstable (Figure 5). The reason is that the system is capable of supplying
power to this fault.
