MID-YEAR EXAMINATION 2009

FORM FIVE
PHYSICS PAPER 3
Time: 1 ½ hours

Name:………………………………………………… Class :………

This paper consists of sections A and B.

Answer all questions in Section A. Write your answers for questions 1 and 2 in the spaces provided in the
question paper.
Answer only one question in section B and write your answers in the answer sheets provided.
Tie up all your answer sheets together with the question paper at the end of the examination.

This question paper consists of …8…..printed pages.

Section A (28m)
Answer all questions. ( You are advised to spend 60 minutes on this section.)

1. An experiment is carried out to investigate the relationship between acceleration ,a, of a troli and the
angle of incline,Ө.

The runway is raised so that the angle of incline, Ө, is 20° and the troli is placed at position A as shown
in figure 1.1

The ticker timer is then switched on and the troli is is released so that it moves down the runway from A
to B. The last 12 ticks on the ticker tape obtained is as shown in figure 1.2. These 12 ticks are to be
divided into lengths of 2 ticks each and measured . The first and last 2-ticks lengths are then used to
calculate the acceleration ,a, of the troli.

The experiment is repeated using different values of Ө =25°, 30°, 35°and 40°.

Figures 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 show the actual lengths of the last 12 ticks on the ticker tape as obtained
in each experiment. The diagrams are drawn to scale.

(a) Based on the aim and procedure of the experiment, identify the

(i) manipulated variable:…………………………………………………… (1m)

(ii)responding variable……………………………………………………… (1m)

(iii) the fixed variable:………………………………………………………. (1m)

(b) Measure the length of the first 2-ticks length, x, and the length of the last 2-ticks length , y, of the
ticker tapes in figures 1.2 , 1.3 ,1.4 , 1.5 and 1.6 when different values of Ө are used.
In each case, calculate the initial velocity , u, and the final velocity ,v, of the troli and hence calculate the
acceleration, a, of the troli where a = v−t u and t being the time interval between u and v.

Time interval between the first and the last 2-ticks lengths , t = ……………………. s (1m)

Tabulate your results for Ө, sin Ө, x, u , y, v, and a in the space below.. (6m)

(c) Plot a graph of a against sin Ө (5m)

(d) Based on your graph , state the relationship between a and Ө (1m)

2. A student carries out an experiment to determine the relationship between electromotive force ,E, and
the internal resistance ,r, of a dry cell. The student uses different values of electric current ,I, and records
the corresponding readings,V, on the voltmeter .

A graph of V against I is plotted as shown in figure 2.1.

Section B (12m)
Answer any one question. Write your answers on the answer sheets provided.
You are advised to spend 30 minutes on this section.

1.

Figure 3.1 shows the image of a road as seen by a student through the lens of a camera.
She notices that the size of the white markings along the middle of the road changes with the distance.

Based on the above observations:

(a) State one suitable inference that can be made (1m)
(b) State one appropriate hypothesis for an investigation (1m)

(c)With the use of apparatus such as a light source, a convex lens and any other suitable apparatus
,describe the experimental framework to test your hypothesis.

In your description, state clearly the following:

(i) aim of the experiment.

(ii) variables in the experiment.
(iii) list of apparatus and materials.
(iv) arrangement of the apparatus.
(v) the procedure of the experiment which include the method of controlling the manipulated .
variable and the method of measuring the responding variable.
(vi) The way you would tabulate the data.
(vii) The way you would analyse the data.
2.
Fig

Figures 4.1 a and 4.1 b show two swings with ropes of different lengths. A student gives a similar
push to each of the swings in figures 4,1 a and 4.1b. It is observed that that the swing in figure
4.1a moves slower than the swing in figure 4.1 b.

Based on the above information and observations:

(a) State one suitable inference that can be made . (1m)

(b) State one appropriate hypothesis for an investigation . (1m)

(c)With the use of apparatus such as a pendulum bob ,retort stand and other suitable apparatus ,describe
the experimental framework to test your hypothesis.

In your description, state clearly the following:

(i) aim of the experiment.
(ii) variables of the experiment.
(iii) list of apparatus and materials.
(iv) arrangement of the apparatus.
(v) the procedure of the experiment which include the method of controlling the manipulated
variable and the method of measuring the responding variable.
(vi) The way you would tabulate the data.
(vii)The way you would analyse the data.
