CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes the introduction, statement of the problem, hypothesis,

significance of the study, scope and limitation, and conceptual framework, and definition

of terms.

Introduction

As we sail through the 21st century, technology is becoming more and more predominant.

Tablets are replacing our textbooks and we can research just about anything that we want to on

our smartphones. Social media has become commonplace, and the way we use technology has

completely transformed the way we live our lives today. The impact that technology has had on

today’s schools has been quite significant.

This widespread adoption of technology has completed changed how teachers teach and

students learn. Teachers are learning how to teach with emerging technologies like tablets,

cellphones, iPads, smart boards, digital cameras and computers, while students are using

advanced technology to shape how they learn. By embracing and integrating technology in the

classroom, teachers were setting students up for a successful life outside of school.

Technology is a crucial tool that student use to productively carry out ideas, acquire

knowledge skills, and solve problems. Having and using of advance gadgets and technologies on

class affect the academic performance of every student. Using smart phones, iPads and tablets
during class cause the student out of focus during discussion and becoming inattentive and

having low academic performance.

Therefore, this study intends to determine the effects of using technology in classroom to

the academic performance of BSIT students in Cavite State University - Carmona Campus.

Thus, this action research would be a great help for the students as well as the teachers to

have enough knowledge of proper using of technology in classroom to have a better academic

performance.

Definition of Terms

The following terms as used by the researchers are operationally defined:

BSIT (Bachelor of Science in Information Technology) refers to course or program in the

Information Technology field. The degree is normally required to work in the Information

Technology industry.

Cellphone refers to a cell, cellular, and cellular phone sometimes abbreviated as cp, is a

mobile or portable phone, it enables a user to communicate almost anywhere in the world.

Computer refers to an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in

binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program.

Digital Camera refers to digicam a camera that captures photographs in digital memory.

Most cameras produced today are digital, and while there are still compact cameras on market.

iPad refers to a tablet computer developed by Apple. The iPad does not include a

keyboard or a trackpad, but instead has a touchscreen interface, which is used to control the

device. Like iPhone, the iPad runs Apple’s iOS operating system.
Smartboards refers to an interactive whiteboard developed by SMART Technologies. It

is a large touch sensitive whiteboard that uses a sensor for detecting user input that are equivalent

to normal PC input devices, such as mice or keyboards.

Social Media refers to the collective of online communications channels dedicated to

community – based input, interaction, content sharing and collaboration and a websites and

applications that enable users to create and share content or participate in social networking.

Tablet refers to a wireless, portable personal computer with touchscreen interface. The

tablet form factor is typically smaller than a notebook computer, but larger than a smartphone.

Technology refers to the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of

technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon

such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science and pure science.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

According to Roblyer (2003), technology may enable the learner to be more actively

involved in his or her own learning. While technology may enhance the classroom and engage

today’s student more effectively, most do not believe it replaces the need for a structured,

content-driving learning process that is grounded in theory.

Based on what Roblver’s said it stands for present study because it tells the positive

effect of the technology in classroom and learning of every student by enhancing the student

learning. It also presents how technology help the learner more active in different way of

learning.

According to Lowerison, et al., (2006), suggest that technology has the potential to

transform the learning environment from passive to active and more subject to the control of the

learner.

Lowerison says that technology has a big help to the study of the students that give

positive effects to them. Technology can transform the environment of learning. It enhances the

knowledge of the student in every subject.

According to the article written by Faber et al. (2015), study the effects of government

upgrades in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), by increasing the internet

connection speeds, on children’s school performance in England. They argue that the upgrades

are randomly made across the country and that they can thus exploit exogenous variation to

estimate the causal, effect. They link the test scores of primary and secondary students to the
availability of ICT at their home address and find that it has zero effect on students’ educational

attainment or learning productivity.

Faber’s article presents how it related to present study by improving the resources that

can help the students in their study not just in school but also in home.

According to Sayre et al., (1998), concluded that the use of technology adds to the

instructor’s credibility. Lecturers can manage class time more efficiently as less time is spent

writing on whiteboards or changing transparencies.

Sayre’s study is related to present study because technology help the instructor break the

waste of time in writing and they can focus in teaching. This would make the student grow

educated that will enable them to improve their academic performance.

Despite this widespread belief that the use of technology in the classroom is generally

good, such may not always be the case. Burbules et al., (2000), suggest technology can be used

well or poorly, and thus its effectiveness is dependent on how it used, by whom and for what

purpose. Instructors use varying amounts of technology in their classes. For example, some

professors utilize PowerPoint slides or similar technology extensively or moderately throughout

a course, while others seldom or never use technology. There may be several reasons why

instructors ultimately adopt technology for classroom use. For some, it may help them to create

better organized, more focused lectures. For others, they believe that the use of technology

benefits students by engaging them more in the classroom and allowing them to listen more

closely without transcribing every word that is spoken. Some professors may choose technology

because writing on whiteboards or blackboards hinders their ability to interact with students.

Still other instructors may adopt technology as a time saving device because it is readily
available today, provided by the publishers who are eager to convince faculty to adopt their

textbooks. Although the motivation may differ, theoretically the overall expectation is that

technology will improve the course, engage the students and enable them to learn more. There

may also be at least the implicit hope by the faculty member that teaching evaluations will

improve.

Burbules’s study is related to the present study because it shows the relation of the

technology in classroom to the student’s performance. With this, it clearly shows that the

technology in classroom has something to do with the student’s performance.

According to Apperson et al., (2006), believe that the use of technology in classrooms

causes students to have a more favorable attitude toward their education, and benefits accrue to

instructors who utilize it in their classes.

Apperson’s study is related to present study because it concluded that technology has a

positive effect to the education of the students. Also, it says that students have a good benefit to

its.

According to (Rodrigo, 2000), in the Philippines, e-learning has been gaining ground in

the education sector with a big push from governmental efforts. The government and the

institutions that supply education services in the Philippines and in other countries give high

recommendation to this e-learning concept.

Rodrigo’s study is related to the present study because it shows the relation of high

recommendation of e-learning concept to the study of the student. With, this it clearly shows that

government has something to do with implementation of technology in the study of the student.
According to Padolina (2002), the Executive Order No. 47 series of 2011 emphasized the

need for continuous innovations of e-learning in the country including the creation of an e-

learning environment by actively promoting it to all education levels. This study looked into the

level of implementation of educational technology in the selected HEIs of Davao del Sur and

investigates if it correlates with academic performance of students in Basic English.

In this study of Padolina it is related to the present study because its implementing and

promoting of e-learning and educational technology in school. This would make the learners

improve their knowledge about using technologies on their studies.

According to National Council of Educational Research and Training (2006), educational

technology (ET) is a learning system adopting the methods, processes, and products to serve

identified educational goals in an organization for it is efficient implementation. Moreover, it is

the use of computers as one of the major peripherals in the implementation of the system with

networks, software, and internet included in the e-learning process.

This article is related to the present study because it emphasis the import of using

technology specifically computers for learning process and educational goals. Also, it showed

that the educational technology implementation has a good effect on e-learning process.

According to Galy, et al., (2011), technology in the field of education is the trend that is

already adopted as an aid to classroom delivery. It is rapidly emerging as a predominant

paradigm in the delivery of education in the society and has been observed that the use of

technology is the best way to transfer knowledge from the teacher to students.
This article is related to the present study because it shows the importance of technology

in transferring the knowledge to the students. It also represents the effectiveness of technology in

classroom and in sending the high quality of education.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology used in this study: research method,

respondents, data gathering instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical analysis of data.

Research Method

The descriptive method, particularly the descriptive status, was used to achieve the goal

of this study. This method seeks to determine the effects of using technology in classroom to the

academic performance of BSIT students in Cavite State University - Carmona Campus.

Respondents of the study

The subjects of the study were the student of CvSU – Carmona Campus, particularly the

BSIT students. They consist of 400 respondents from four (4) year level, First year, Second year,

Third year, and fourth year, in CvSU – Carmona Campus.

Data Gathering Instrument

The research will use survey questionnaire to determine the effects of using technology in

classroom to the academic performance of BSIT students in Cavite State University - Carmona

Campus Academic Year 2017 - 2018.

In the preparation of the instrument, the requirements in the designing of good data

collection instrument were considered. For instance, statement describing the situations or issues

pertaining was toned to accommodate the knowledge preparedness of the respondents, Open-

ended options were provided to accommodate free formatted views related to topics or issues. In

this way, the instrument is authorized to obtain valid responses of the students.

To determine the reliability of the instrument, the researchers will conduct a test-retest

method. The same questionnaire is administered twice to the 10 selected students after ten days

interval of the actual survey. This is to determine whether they retain the same answer in a period

of time.

Procedure

The first step before going to the testing proper is to make a request letter. Upon approval,

the researchers retrieve the request letter. Moreover, the researchers administered the

questionnaires to the respondents after giving them some background information of what are

our intentions and what is the study all about. The respondents will only given enough time to

answer the questions.

After data gathering, the researchers now collected the questionnaires to tally the scores

and to apply the statistical treatment to be used in the study.
