Streets

a thoroughfare especially in a city, town, or village

that is wider than an alley or lane and that usually
includes sidewalks

Bridges

A bridge is a structure providing passage over an

obstacle without closing the way beneath. The
required passage may be for a road, a railway,
pedestrians, a canal or a pipeline. The obstacle to
be crossed may be a river, a road, railway or a
valley.

Highways

Highway is defined as the main road intended for

travel by public in important cities and towns.

Railroads

Railways is an energy efficient means of transport

which runs on permanent way consisting of two
parallel rails made of steel and fastened to
sleepers or ties which rest on ballast or secured
solid foundation.
Airport and Hanger

Airport is basically an aerodrome which is

intended to be use for the commercial activities.
Airport may be internal or domestic. Highways,
waterways and railways are important for the
development of any nation but in present age
where people are time conscious, the importance
of airways and air transport is not avoidable

Ports

Port can be understood as a place, where loading

and unloading of ships and boats are done. The
term port is often juxtaposed with harbor, which
implies a place along a coast where ships or
boats can take shelter if the atmospheric
conditions are not well for sailing.

Canals

an artificial waterway constructed to allow the

passage of boats or ships inland or to convey
water for irrigation.

River Improvements

River engineering is the process of planned

human intervention in the course, characteristics,
or flow of a river with the intention of producing
some defined benefit. People have intervened in
the natural course and behavior of rivers since
before recorded history, to manage the water
resources, to protect against flooding, or to make passage along or across rivers
easier.
Lighthouses

A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of

structure designed to emit light from a system of
lamps and lenses and to serve as a navigational
aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland
waterways.

Dry Docks

A dock that can be kept dry for use during the

construction or repairing of ships

Buildings

Building or housing is the most fundamental

needs for humankind. It gives us shelter. When
we see or hear the “Building” word, we imagine
that a building is tall and has a roof, walls, rooms,
etc. However, in a broader sense, the definition of
a building is structurally constructive based on
bricks, sands, types of cement, water, concrete, metal, etc.

Fixed Structures for Irrigation

Irrigation is defined as the process of artificial

supply of water to soil for raising crops. It is a
science of planning and designing an efficient,
low-cost, economic irrigation system tailored to fit
natural conditions. It is the engineering of
controlling and harnessing the various natural
sources of water, by constructing dams and reservoirs, canals and headworks, and
finally distributing the water to the agricultural fields.
Flood Protection

The art or technique of trying to control rivers with

dams etc. in order to minimize the occurrence of
floods.

Drainage

Drainage is the artificial removal of water, both

surface and sub-surface. Drainage is often a
major element of civil engineering and
construction projects and is necessary to avoid
flooding and other damage.

Water Supply

A branch of civil engineering concerned with the

development of sources of supply, transmission,
distribution, and treatment of water. The term is
used most frequently in regard to municipal water
works, but applies also to water systems for
industry, irrigation, and other purposes.

Sewage Works

a place where sewage is treated so that it can be

safely got rid of or changed into fertilizer
Members of The Board of Civil Engineering

Hon. Praxedes P. Bernardo Chairman

Hon. Praxedes P. Bernardo served as member of

Professional Regulatory Board of Civil
Engineering for several years under former
Chairman Apollo S. Enriquez. Chairman Bernardo
is a life member of PICE Lungsod ng Maynila
Chapter since 1992.

Engr. Pericles P. Dakay

Pericles P. Dakay is a man of many hats, and on

any given day, a man of lesser constitution would
be overwhelmed with the many roles the Dakay
Construction and Development Corporation
president has to play.
A master in time management, PPD, as he is
referred to in the office, holds a PHD in
Engineering Management from the University of Missouri-Rolla, MO, earning it in
1990 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He got his masters in Civil Engineering in 1998 in the
same school, three years after graduating as a cum laude with a BS in Civil
Engineering degree at the University of San Carlos. In between his bachelor’s and
master’s degrees, he finished 30 of 36 hours for an MS in business management.

Engr. Romeo A. Estanero

A member of Board of Civil Engineering, a full

Professor 5 of Department of Civil Engineering in
the De La Salle University. He graduated at the
University of Dundee of Structural Engineering.
