2 Parameter sets
The laser sintering process is controlled by so-called parameter sets on EOS systems. These
parameter sets contain material specific exposure and heating parameters as well as system
and software adaptions.
In the past system users had to be enabled and trained in the skills to adapt most of the
exposure parameters, because the process and system parameters were unstable. To
compensate these variations, the exposure parameters had to be adjusted. As these variations
were removed during the recent years and a stable process and stable system configurations
were developed, they can now be used as a standard for most applications.
The PPM parameter sets, which are necessary for the production of the particular PPPs, are
selected according to the requirement profile of the particular design. Therewith, to a certain
extent, costs, mechanics and detail resolution of the parts can be varied correspondingly.
Together with the standardized and regularly maintained and tested laser-sintering system, the
competent handling of the individual material circle and the use of appropriate quality
procedures, the PPPs provide a closed system for process control for the experienced user.
Considering the limitation of use this is the key for making the standardized quality of the
PPM available.
In the course of development and introduction of the PPM standards, EOS has adapted –
where necessary - its range of services offered to the rising requirements:
New, standardized quality control and adjustment procedures are used for important
process factors which play a decisive role in the context of the PPM (e.g. building
temperature).
Geometry and process related reasonable limitations of use of the PPPs have been
evaluated.
Both aspects were packed into concise training courses (see chapter 7.3).
The range of the service products was continuously improved according to the
requirements of the PPM, so that a PPM-compliant maintenance state of your
FORMIGA P 110 Velocis can be guaranteed any time (see chapter 7.5).
For the use of the PPM parameter sets it is essential to participate in suitable P 110 trainings
courses. Experienced customers who are already familiar with the EOS systems, as well as
customers who are unversed in this technology, profit from the P 110 training program which
is optimally adapted to these requirements.
It enables you to unleash the full potential of the PPM concept and therewith to cover a broad
range of requirements according to specific need.
Apart from PA 2200 which is covered by the PPM-parameter sets, the OEPs support further
materials. Further detail information regarding this topic is provided in the material
compatibility matrix.
2.4 ParameterEditor
The modification of existing exposure parameters in order to optimize parts results is possible
with the ParameterEditor packets. These parameters are based on an EOS proved parameter
set. The start values of the exposure type are included in this packet and can be adapted to a
customized exposure type. It can be adapted until the results wanted are reached.
ParameterEditor packets include:
ExposureEditor license
OEP or PPP parameter sets
Start values which can be customized using the ExposureEditors
The ParameterEditor packets offer the ideal condition for less experienced users, which require
optimizing the exposure parameters to manufacture even better parts.
2.4.1 ExposureEditor
The ExposureEditor enables the development and the use of your own parameter sets on an
system equipped for this purpose and offers therefore a functional editor. On the basis of
existing exposure types like

For more detailed descriptions of the materials and process properties please see the
application instructions, the safety data sheets as well as the “Material Data Centre P” on the
EOS homepage.
3.5 Alumide
- Aluminium-filled multifunctional polyamide 12 powder for the production of models
constructions, tool inserts for small series, end products and spare parts
- Parts have an excellent long-time stability
- Parts built in Alumide distinguish themselves by their well-balanced ratio of density and
rigidity as well as by their outstanding optic surface quality and dimensional accuracy
- The metallic-looking parts can be finished by grinding, polishing or coating. Due to the
good machining properties of the material, parts can be finished by milling, drilling or
turning
3.8 PP 1101
PP 1101 is a very fine material optimized for the processing with EOS laser-sintering
systems. This thermoplastic material is used in a large number of applications thanks to its
outstanding properties:
- mechanically stressed functional parts and pre serial prototypes made of Polypropylene
- final products and spare parts which require excellent, constant long-term behavior
In general PP 1101:
- shows excellent resistance to chemicals
For additional demands e.g. on processor performance or RAM, especially with simultaneous
use of external data processing software, please refer to the corresponding supplier
documents.
EOS Software available in two variants 32bit and 64bit has to be used stringently in the
version according to the MS operating system. This means on a MS 64bit operating system the
64bit version of EOS software has to be used and on a MS 32bit operating system the 32bit
version of EOS software has to be used!
Various software packages are available for data preparation on a PC, as described below.
4.1 EOS RP-Tools - the EOS software for generating and manipulating layer
data
EOS RP-Tools is a software package which allows part data in STL format or in CLI format to
be converted into the EOS-specific SLI format required for the subsequent building process.
Layer data of solid bodies can be separated into skin and core data to facilitate process
optimisation.
The EOS RP-Tools consists of the modules:
- SLIVIEW: graphical user interface for visualising layer data
- SLICER: generates two-dimensional layer data out of three-dimensional STL data
- SLIFIX: automatic repair of the most common data errors in layer data such as
overlaps, double contours and inverted polygon-orientation
- SKINCORE: separates massive part data into one data set for a definable Skin and a Core
on a two-dimensional basis. Note: with PSW V3.3 this functionality is also
included in the PSW.
- SLICONV: automatic data conversion from CLI to EOS SLI and vice versa (either ASCII
or binary)
- Data input format STL, CLI (ASCII or binary), EOS SLI
- Data output format EOS SLI, CLI (ASCII or binary)
If a higher level of automation of the data preparation process is preferred, the Magics module
EOS Build Processor can also be used for this function.
Magics guides you through every step of your Rapid Prototyping or Additive Manufacturing
workflow. With Magics, you can import nearly all file formats and native color information,
and stay in control of your original data.
The STL editor in Magics allows you to correct problems, as well as create watertight data and
shortcuts to suit your workflow. And all in a user-friendly interface.
With the Magics STL editor, you can also take your designs to the next level: add logos, serial
numbers, and hollow parts; apply textures; and perform Boolean operations and advanced
cuts.
Magics has the tools you need to duplicate parts, orient parts in an ideal way, and create no-
build zones.
Magics ensures you print only perfect parts. It allows you to view slices, detect collisions, save
platforms, and generate useful reports.
Magics is compatible with a set of specialized modules to meet your specialized needs.
Training for this modules is provided by Materialise:
With the introduction of the Build Processor (BP), Materialise’s Magics and Streamics software
now connects to all EOS systems in a machine-specific way, allowing EOS users to get the best
out of their machines. By a tighter integration between Materialise and EOS systems, new
technical possibilities for true manufacturing solutions are enabled.
Since the BP Build Processor comes as a dedicated installer, users only need to upgrade if it is
really needed, taking away the pains of different development cycles at EOS and Materialise.
Moreover, Materialise and EOS can bring new technologies easy and fast to the market by an
update of the build processor and since the system is dedicated to a selected type of machine
it only shows the options and functionality that the user needs.
Either the EOS Build Processor or EOS RP-Tools can be used to slice CAD files.
The Magics Structures Module was designed to help you reduce the weight and material usage
in your designs. Whether you wish to: hollow a part and fill it with a lightweight structure;
convert a part to lattice (for tissue and bone engineering); or create functional surfaces, the
easy-to-use wizard in our Structures Module will guide you every step of the way.
Furthermore, with hollowed designs, the Magics Structures Module enables you to add holes
so that excess powder can be removed. The module features a structures library and can be
used to alter structures to meet a variety of objectives, including: saving powder, temperature
control, reinforcing your design, and much more.
4.4.3 FormFit
With FormFit, you can easily protect very large & fragile parts:
Parts that are very fragile and/or large are often deformed or damaged during transport. With
the new FormFit function, you can easily create packaging STL-files which can be used to
produce the optimal support and protection for your parts.
- With FormFit, a large amount of time can be saved on packaging file creation
- Packaging files have no undercuts
Following CAD formats can be imported into Magics with the Magics Import Modules:
Whether you are using traditional CAD or other packages such as Google SketchUp, SolidWorks
