Master Thesis Study:

Traffic Criticality Characterization in a Packet Switched Network

Description

This is an opportunity for a Master of Science student to work with technology leading transport network
design in the telecommunications industry.

Traffic monitoring in packet switched networks (IP) is normally performed to collect statistics and analyze
the network status. It can also be used to anticipate traffic surges and proactively redirect traffic to avoid
or mitigate congestion. To do so, a link criticality definition as a function of the current traffic volume vs.
the link capacity is required. This function may be defined differently, depending on the traffic
characteristics, the queue capacity and other aspects of the network.
The task of the thesis is to compare the actual traffic behavior against different criticality definitions to find
those that best match the experienced congestion symptoms (e.g., packet loss and delay statistics).
Public domain simulators (ns3) will be used to model and the network traffic, and public domain
environments will be used for function definition and data post-processing and comparison (R or Matlab).
The choice of the most convenient modeling environment is part of the job. The results of the thesis
should be concluded in a presentation and a report.

The project is intended for one master thesis student, and is expected to be performed in Kista, starting in
2018 Q4 and ending 6 months later.

Qualifications

You should be a Master of Science student in computer science, electrical engineering or similar.
Knowledge of queue theory and packet switched networks to a certain depth is essential.
Being comfortable with one or preferably more programming languages (R, Python, Java, C/C++) is also
required, in conjunction with related supporting tools (editors, IDEs, compilers and operating systems of
choice). Experience with a network simulator (e.g., ns3) and familiarity with monitoring and capturing tools
(e.g. Wireshark) is strongly recommended.

The successful candidate must have

• Excellent grades
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken
• Good communications skills
• Self-motivated and positive person.
