Who is he?

Ryan Cayabyab

known as Mr. C, born Raymundo Cipriano Pujante

Cayabyab on May 4, 1954 in Manila, Philippines. Ryan's
mother was an opera singer; she died when he was only 6,
while his father fights to sustain him and his three siblings. His
mother's wish was that no one of her children would make
music as a line of work; knowing how tough life is for a
musician with insufficient income. He is married to Emmy
Punsalan, and together they have two children: Cristina
María and Antonio María Cayabyab.

Ryan Cayabyab firstly took up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in the

University of the Philippines, Diliman. But at the same moment, he searched for an
employment to sustain his studies, and sooner join with then-Senator Salvador Laurel as
accompanist for the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) Chorale Ensemble.
Noting his incomparable ability on the piano, the Senator presented him a scholarship
that would allow Ryan to alter his course and hold learning in music.

Cayabyab afterward graduated from the UP College of Music earning a Bachelor of

Music, Major in Composition degree. Following that, he became a complete professor
for the Department of Composition and Music Theory in the UP Diliman for about two
decades.

At the twist of the century, he was about to take his family and transfer abroad, but
when presented by Danding Cojuangco, President of the San Miguel Corporation, a
authority post that would give him full way in producing and performing new music that
would carry out a new wave to the Philippine music scene, he acknowledged the
proposal.

Ryan Cayabyab is a prominent Filipino musician and the existing Executive and Artistic
Director of the San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts. His works vary from
specially made full-length ballets, theater musicals, choral pieces, a crowd set to
unaccompanied chorus, and orchestral pieces, to salable recordings of popular
composition, film scores and television specials.

Now, he is presently in his 7th year as Executive and Artistic Director of the San Miguel
Foundation for the Performing Arts.

Contributions or Influences to Philippine Music
The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab opened its doors to the public in October 1986 as
an alternative school of music for children, teens and adults. Originally called Ryan
Cayabyab The Music Studio and located in Sunvar Plaza in Amorsolo Street in Makati
City, spouses Ryan and Emmy Cayabyab recruited their colleagues and Ryan’s former
students from the University of the Philippines College of Music to become the school’s
first faculty members. It offered individual courses in piano and voice studies, and later
added theory and rudiments in their curriculum. Through the years the school has
trained countless musical artists, entertainers and musicians who have gained national
recognition. The original faculty members have also gone on to become noted leaders
in their respective fields.

Today, The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab endeavours to be the premier institution
that will give more Filipinos a chance to experience the joy, the exuberance and the
exhilaration that a musical experience can bring, through properly guided lessons and
effective programs taught by professional mentors coming from the academe and the
music and performing industry; through master classes led by outstanding artists and
music gurus; through exciting seminars and workshops by top local and visiting artists
and lecturers; and also through ensemble and group musical encounters for
professionals, enthusiasts and hobbyists to further deepen their appreciation for the
musical art.

The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab wish to develop happy, well-rounded, highly
motivated and outstanding Filipino musical artists, both professional and non-
professional performers and musicians who will share this joyful musical experience to
their audiences. In so doing The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab hopes to become the
most sought after and admired music learning institution in the country.

He is recognized by many sectors for his ability to bridge the gap between Filipino pop
and classical music.

With more than three hundred original compositions, his works launched the careers of
countless OPM artists and shaped the Pinoy music scene and still continues to influence
others. He is an arranger, composer, conductor, director, producer and professor. From
opera musicales, movie themes, jingles for product commercials, to even liturgical
symphonies and national or corporate commissions, there seems no area in the local
music scene that has escaped Mr. C's touch.

Most importantly, he is an artist who uplifted Filipino music through countless

contributions, which include original and award-winning compositions, movie score
awards, best theme song prizes, international grand prix awards, among a long list of
recognitions. For all of this he was recently awarded the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining
2004 for Music.
