THE MASS OF THE CATECHUMENS

THE ENTRANCE RITES
HYMN 618 Austria

Introit
Haste thee, O God, unto my rescue, and save me; O Lord,
make haste to my deliverance: let mine enemies be ashamed
and confounded, that seek after my soul. Ps. Let them be
turned backward, and put to confusion: that wish me evil.
Glory be…Haste thee, O God.

The Mass continues in the Book of Common Prayer

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Old Testament Wisdom of Solomon 9.13-18b
For who can learn the counsel of God?
Or who can discern what the Lord wills?
For the reasoning of mortals is worthless,
and our designs are likely to fail;
for a perishable body weighs down the soul,
and this earthy tent burdens the thoughtful mind.
We can hardly guess at what is on earth,
and what is at hand we find with labour;
but who has traced out what is in the heavens?
Who has learned your counsel,
unless you have given wisdom
and sent your holy spirit from on high?
And thus the paths of those on earth were set right,
and people were taught what pleases you,
and were saved by wisdom.’

2
The Psalm 90.3-6, 12-17
3 You turn us back to the dust and say, *
“Go back, O child of earth.”
4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday
when it is past * and like a watch in the night.
5 You sweep us away like a dream; *
we fade away suddenly like the grass.
6 In the morning it is green and flourishes; *
in the evening it is dried up and withered.
12 So teach us to number our days *
that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.
13 Return, O Lord; how long will you tarry? *
be gracious to your servants.
14 Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; *
so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
15 Make us glad by the measure of the days that you
afflicted us *and the years in which we suffered
adversity.
16 Show your servants your works *
And your splendour to their children.
17 May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; *
prosper the work of our hands; prosper our
handiwork.

The Epistle Philemon 9-10, 12-17

Yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love—and I,
Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of
Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus,
whose father I have become during my imprisonment. I am
sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to
keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in
3
your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I
preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that
your good deed might be voluntary and not something
forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you
for a while, so that you might have him back for ever, no
longer as a slave but as more than a slave, a beloved brother
—especially to me but how much more to you, both in the
flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner,
welcome him as you would welcome me.

ALLELUIA

V. O come, let us sing unto the Lord:

let us heartily rejoice in the
strength of our salvation.
R. Alleluia.

GRADUAL HYMN 523 Vs 1, 2,3 Walton

THE HOLY GOSPEL S. Luke 14.25-33

The Lord be with you
And with thy spirit
The continuation of the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Saint Luke
Glory be to Thee, O Lord

Now large crowds were travelling with him; and he turned

and said to them, ‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate
father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters,
4
yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does
not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For
which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit
down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough
to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation
and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule
him, saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to
finish.” Or what king, going out to wage war against another
king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able
with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him
with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is
still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of
peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if
you do not give up all your possessions.
The Gospel of Christ
Praise be to Thee, O Christ

THE MASS OF THE FAITHFUL (LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST)

Offertory Antiphon Cantor
Moses besought the Lord his God and said: Why, O Lord,
doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people? Turn from thy
fierce wrath; remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: to whom
thou swarest to give a land flowing with milk and honey.
And the Lord repented of the evil: which he thought to do
unto his people.

OFFERTORY HYMN 552 Festal Song

5
Orate Fratres
V. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty.

the praise and glory of His Name, to our benefit and
the benefit of His Holy Church.

The Secret (soto voce)

bounden duty and service: that this sacrifice which we offer
