Introduce the words epic, character, setting and plot together with their meanings.

a. What is an epic?

Epic a long narrative poem in elevated style recounting the deeds of a legendary or historical hero.

b. Elements of the Story

CHARACTERS The characters are the individuals that the story is about.

SETTING The setting is the location of the action.

Plot is the storyline of a text. An author puts together a series of events to create a story. The
sequence of that series of events is the plot.

Exposition
The exposition is the introduction to the story. Characters and setting are introduced.

Rising Action
The rising action presents a central conflict within a character or between one or more character. The
conflict builds during the rising action.

Climax
The climax occurs when the conflict is at its peak and when there seems to be no viable solution to
the conflict.

Falling Action
The falling action occurs after the climax when the reader is still unsure if the protagonist will be able
to resolve the conflict.

CONFLICT Every story has a conflict to solve.


RESOLUTION The solution to the problem is the way the action is resolved.

B. ACTIVITY- Development of the Lesson

Ask the students to read the story silently from the screen.

The Story of Lam-ang (A Summary)

Don Juan and his wife Namongan lived in Nalbuan, now part of La Union in the northern part
of the Philippines. They had a son named Lam-ang. Before Lam-ang was born, Don Juan went to the
mountains in order to punish a group of their Igorot enemies. While he was away, his son Lam-ang
was born. It took four people to help Namongan give birth. As soon as the baby boy popped out, he
spoke and asked that he be given the name Lam-ang. He also chose his godparents and asked
where his father was. After nine months of waiting for his father to return, Lam-ang decided he would
go look for him. Namongan thought Lam-ang was up to the challenge but she was sad to let him go.
During his exhausting journey, he decided to rest for awhile. He fell asleep and had a dream about
his father's head being stuck on a pole by the Igorot. Lam-ang was furious when he learned what
had happened to his father. He rushed to their village and killed them all, except for one whom he let
go so that he could tell other people about Lam-ang's greatness. Upon returning to Nalbuan in
triumph, he was bathed by women in the Amburayan river. All the fish died because of the dirt and
odor from Lam-ang's body. There was a young woman named Ines Kannoyan whom Lam-ang
wanted to woo. She lived in Calanutian and he brought along his white rooster and gray dog to visit
her. On the way, Lam-ang met his enemy Sumarang, another suitor of Ines whom he fought and
readily defeated. Lam-ang found the house of Ines surrounded by many suitors all of whom were
trying to catch her attention. He had his rooster crow, which caused a nearby house to fall. This made
Ines look out. He had his dog bark and in an instant the fallen house rose up again. The girl's parents
witnessed this and called for him. The rooster expressed the love of Lam-ang. The parents agreed to
a marriage with their daughter if Lam-ang would give them a dowry valued at double their wealth.
Lam-ang had no problem fulfilling this condition and he and Ines were married. It was a tradition to
have a newly married man swim in the river for the rarang fish. Unfortunately, Lam-ang dove straight
into the mouth of the water monster Berkakan. Ines had Marcos get his bones, which she covered
with a piece of cloth. His rooster crowed and his dog barked and slowly the bones started to move.
Back alive, Lam-ang and his wife lived happily ever after with his white rooster and gray dog.

"The Flowers" by Alice Walker

It seemed to Myop as she skipped lightly from hen house to pigpen to smokehouse that the days had never been as
beautiful as these. The air held a keenness that made her nose twitch. The harvesting of the corn and cotton, peanuts and
squash, made each day a golden surprise that caused excited little tremors to run up her jaws.

Myop carried a short, knobby stick. She struck out at random at chickens she liked, and worked out the beat of a song on
the fence around the pigpen. She felt light and good in the warm sun. She was ten, and nothing existed for her but her
song, the stick clutched in her dark brown hand, and the tat-de-ta-ta-ta of accompaniment,

Turning her back on the rusty boards of her family's sharecropper cabin, Myop walked along the fence till it ran into the
stream made by the spring. Around the spring, where the family got drinking water, silver ferns and wildflowers grew.
Along the shallow banks pigs rooted. Myop watched the tiny white bubbles disrupt the thin black scale of soil and the
water that silently rose and slid away down the stream.

She had explored the woods behind the house many times. Often, in late autumn, her mother took her to gather nuts
among the fallen leaves. Today she made her own path, bouncing this way and that way, vaguely keeping an eye out for
snakes. She found, in addition to various common but pretty ferns and leaves, an armful of strange blue flowers with
velvety ridges and a sweet suds bush full of the brown, fragrant buds.

By twelve o'clock, her arms laden with sprigs of her findings, she was a mile or more from home. She had often been as
far before, but the strangeness of the land made it not as pleasant as her usual haunts. It seemed gloomy in the little cove
in which she found herself. The air was damp, the silence close and deep.

Myop began to circle back to the house, back to the peacefulness of the morning. It was then she stepped smack into his
eyes. Her heel became lodged in the broken ridge between brow and nose, and she reached down quickly, unafraid, to
free herself. It was only when she saw his naked grin that she gave a little yelp of surprise.

He had been a tall man. From feet to neck covered a long space. His head lay beside him. When she pushed back the
leaves and layers of earth and debris Myop saw that he'd had large white teeth, all of them cracked or broken, long
fingers, and very big bones. All his clothes had rotted away except some threads of blue denim from his overalls. The
buckles of the overall had turned green.

Myop gazed around the spot with interest. Very near where she'd stepped into the head was a wild pink rose. As she
picked it to add to her bundle she noticed a raised mound, a ring, around the rose's root. It was the rotted remains of a
noose, a bit of shredding plowline, now blending benignly into the soil. Around an overhanging limb of a great spreading
oak clung another piece. Frayed, rotted, bleached, and frazzled--barely there--but spinning restlessly in the breeze. Myop
laid down her flowers.

And the summer was over.

BIAG NI LAM-ANG (Life of Lam-ang) is pre-Hispanic epic poem of the Ilocano people ofthe Philippines. The
story was handed down orally for generations before it was writtendown around 1640 assumedly by a
blind Ilokano bard named Pedro Bucaneg.

Pedro Bucaneg. Pedro Bukaneg (March 1592 – c. 1630) was a Filipino poet. Blind since birth, he is the
acknowledged author of the Ilocano epic Biag ni Lam-ang (Life of Lam-ang). He is considered the "Father of
Ilocano literature."
An epic poem is a long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to
the culture of the poet. Many ancient writers used epic poetry to tell tales of intense adventures and heroic
feats

Analysis:

The epic Biag ni Lam-ang reflects several truths applicable to human life. More specifically,
these truths reveal some attitudes, traits, and values of Filipinos, especially among Ilocanos because
they were the ones responsible of creating and popularizing this phenomenal epic.

First, Filipinos are very family oriented. When Lam-ang was born, his father was already
captured by the Igorots in the forest. It is even possible that his father was already dead during the
time. This means that he never had an opportunity to experience the love of his father or meet him
even once in his lifetime. However, when Lam-ang learned of what happened to his father, he
promised that he would avenge for his death. In this instance, we could see Lam-ang, willing to die
just to seek justice for a man whom he never personally met, but is recognizable to him in terms of
their family relationship; the father and son relationship. Today, Filipinos would usually defend their
family members in the face of threat and persecution from other people. Additionally, Filipinos have
the practice of letting the sons and daughters to still stay in the house of their parents even if they
have already married. Filipinos give emphasis on the rivalry between them and their competitors in
the hearts of the persons they love. When Lam-ang fell in love with Ines, he killed several monsters
and eventually fought Sumarang who was also a dedicated suitor of Ines. Among many Filipino
teenagers today, if they could not get themselves noticed by their crushes, they do something to
remove the one who is getting in their way. For Filipinos, competition over love is serious. Not getting
the person they love because someone else was preferred over them is very degrading. This truth
though might also apply to some other cultures. Since love is universal, it is likely that this particular
attitude is not exclusively Filipino.

Filipinos value and sanctify friendship. When Lam-ang died, his friends were the ones who
tried to seek for a way for him to regain his life. Nowadays, aside from family, Filipinos would run to
their friends in times of downfalls and disappointments because they know that the company, comfort,
compassion, and care that their friends can offer will surely contribute a lot to bringing back the life in
them.

The Filipino character traits that I have explained are just some of the many others that are
reflected in the epic ‘’Biag Ni Lam-ang.’’ Certainly, every aspect of the epic has an implication to the
Filipino people because it is a very original Filipino-made work of art.

I.SETTINGS:
a. Place: Nana Emilia’s House
b.Time: The time setting for the action is in the afternoon. This storyhappened somewhat between
1950’s up to the present time. There is no specific season for the said story but the story evolves in
the evening.
II.CHARACTERS:
a.Protagonist: Mr. Angeles
b.Antagonist: Himself
III.PLOT:
a.Exposition: The story is started by Mr. Angeles who is coming home for hisperiodic inspection trip.
Then he had written in Mariveles to Nana Emiliathat he has a surprise to him that he bought mats that
are made by anartistic craftsman at this area. These mats have colorful designs withtheir own
distinguish weaves, design, and colors. He is excited to give itto them all.
b.Rising Action The rising action is when Mr. Angeles is giving his surprised gift tothe whole family.
And the siblings were very excited to get their gifts.And one by one, on the lighted area of the house,
he gave the mats withdistinguish names and symbolism on it.
c.Climax The highest part of the story is wherein they all get the mats butthere are 3 remaining mats
that must be unfolded. And Mr. Angelesunfold it one by one and he speaks in a loud voice that he
offers this simple mats to his 3 dead siblings which are Josefina, Victoria, and Concepcion
d.Falling Action The falling action of the story is where Nana Emilia and Mr.Angeles argues about this
sensitive issue that they must forget already
because they are dead but Mr. Angeles is so stubborn that he emphasized that these children must
not be taken for granted.
e.Denouement The denouement of this story is when the cihildren heard theword exploding in the
silence. They wanted to turn away and not to seethe face of their father and also when Nana Emila
shivered once andtwice, bowed her head, gripped her clapsed hands between her thighs.
f.Ending At the end of the story there was a total silence on the house. Then the mats were unfolded
and each name was slowly revealed. And the mats for the 3 dead siblings were described.
IV. CONFLICT: Man vs. Himself
Because Mr. Angeles wants to commemorate his 3 siblings and he was so emotional that this
sensitive issue must not be talked about and also the emotion was look before in himself and he find
the way out to burst that emotion by offering mats to the 3 siblings
