1 Markets and
timeframes

Why they are important:

In general, every trader has his own trading style, which is usually a reflection of his
own personality, and one of the keys for a long trading career is finding a trading
style that suits you:

 Some markets and timeframes can be too “fast” for certain types of
personalities, causing a lot of stress and leading into expensive and
emotionally painful mistakes,

 On the other hand, some markets and timeframes can be too “slow”, boring
the trader into the temptation of “pursuing” trades just for the sake of
trading, without following a rigid and proven trading plan.

So personality is the first key element when considering the right timeframe and
market to trade.

Another important element is personal availability:

 Many beginners have a regular “day job” while starting out with systematic
trading, so choosing a 1-minute timeframe and watching it during the day
when you should be working is not the best approach,

 On the other hand, choosing a market that trades during your night-time
might not be the best idea either, as you certainly don't want to wake up
several times during the night to check your trading strategies - it’s not
sustainable and you will get burnt out very quickly.

And finally, some timeframes and markets simply don’t work well with certain types
of trading:

 For example, 1-minute charts or currency markets can be pretty tough for
breakout strategies, and while your overall trading approach could be sound,
selecting the wrong timeframe or market could make you think the approach
doesn't work, and even kill your chances at the very beginning of your trading
career!

2 Technology

Why is it important:

We’re living in a technological world and everything around us is evolving very fast.

In the trading industry, we’re spoilt for choice at so many levels, we have lots of
options to choose from.

However ‘the latest’ is not always ‘the greatest’.

Many trading platforms on the market can be buggy, expensive, difficult to learn,
and some are actually designed by dishonest brokers to rip their customers off
without them even knowing!

So, when it comes to a trading platform, you should always use a solution which is
proven, industry-standard, with a wide, well-established community around the
platform.

When it comes to hardware, there are many options today too:

 Although laptops can be pretty powerful nowadays, a traditional computer

with a powerful CPU can still be a better solution in some cases.

 Another option is a Virtual Private Server (VPS), which can be great for
traders; however some are more suited to trading than others, so you really
need to know what to look for when choosing the right VPS solution for you.

3
Best
Performing
Systems

Why are they important:

Miles Davis was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer, and was
one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-
century music.

And Miles‘ approach of “First you imitate, then you innovate” applies to trading as
well.

One of the best ways to start with systematic trading and to accelerate your learning
is to study existing successful trading systems you can find on the internet,
magazines, or trading books:

 What do they have in common?

 What markets and timeframes do they usually use?

 How complex or simple are they?

 What are their basic elements?

 Are they regularly re optimized?

 What is a realistic expectation of performance?

Although markets are constantly evolving every day, some of the key elements
behind successful trading systems haven’t changed for over 20 years or more.

Once you know the commonalities behind the best performing trading systems, and
understand the basic foundations they are built on, it’s much easier to expand on
that knowledge to progress further and faster.

Even experienced and successful traders keep studying successful systems and
traders, consuming more trading books, research, and magazines to expand their
knowledge, and then apply it to their own trading.

Imitate first... Then innovate!

4 Worst
Performing
Systems

Why is it important:

Most traders fail.

That’s the sad truth, but it can also be a great opportunity to learn and progress...

Especially if you can learn from the failures of others, and avoid them yourself.

The internet is full of failed traders, however most don’t want to admit their failures
or even share what they did wrong, so it can be difficult to know what to avoid.
Some of the common problems of failed traders can be:

 The type of systems they trade,

 The process they used to create the trading system,

 The testing approach they used to validate the system,

 The way the system was applied to the market - including market,
instrument, timeframe, position sizing, stop-loss techniques, and a number
of other factors.

There are a lot of factors that can cause failed trading systems, so keep an eye out
for these...

Knowing what NOT to do can in some cases be even more useful than knowing what
to do.

5 Behind the
scenes

Why is it important:

Selecting the right timeframe, market, and trading approach, and then building a
profitable trading strategy based on the best and worst performing strategies is
really only half of the picture.

Even if you already trade live, with real money, and are making some profits, there
are still a lot of challenges in front of you, for example:

 When is the right time to switch a system on or off? (Many trading systems
have a “shelf life” and it might not be the best decision to keep them running
forever)

 If your trading strategy starts failing, what will you do? Can you revive it by
using regular reoptimization or do you need to put the strategy in the bin?

 Which leads to another question - should you be using variable or fixed

parameters?

These are just some of the ‘Behind the scenes’ questions you need to consider
before you start trading with real money.

6 Portfolio

Why is it important:

One trading strategy is good to start, to get a taste of trading.

But to make some serious money in the market, and to keep making money
consistently in the markets, you need a whole portfolio of trading strategies.

That’s how you smooth your equity curve, minimize the volatility of your profits and
losses, and secure a stable income.

But building your first trading portfolio comes with important questions to consider:

 What is the best way to approach portfolio construction?

 How do you combine multiple systems into a powerful portfolio?

 How many systems do you need, what kind of systems, and which
timeframes you should use?

 Should you combine swing trading and daytrading strategies?

 How much money do you need to capitalize your portfolio properly?

Once you get through all of these important questions too, you are finally ready to
trade like a real pro.

Well-built portfolios can have a huge positive impact on your overall trading results
and you should have this in mind from the very beginning, even if you are just
14

starting out in systematic trading.
