Distinction Between curriculum and other Related Terminologies1.

Curriculum and Syllabus


What is curriculum?-is wider in scope than syllabus.-Prepared by the curriculum designer.- Heart of the
school.What is syllabus?-It is the content of the school subjects offered in the school.- a subset of the
curriculum.Example: mathematics, English- It contains what student will learn in the various school subjects in
a year or semester.- It is prepared by the teacher or an instructor in the school.
2. Curriculum and Scheme of work
-It is a breakdown of the content of what students are expected to learn in a given period.-The systematic
arrangement of subject matter and activities within a given time.-Is a plan of what will be covered in each week
of session of the learning programme or courses?- Used to make a lesson plan.THEREFORE: Scheme of work
is not a curriculum but a plan of subject matter that will becovered with in a week.
3. Curriculum and course of study
- Is an educational programme leading to the award of certificate at the end of the programme for aparticular set
of learner.Example: BSED major in SS in a teacher education programme.THEREFORE: Course of study is
mainly refers to a programme of learning that are beingoffered to a particular school like BSED English, BSED
Math, BSED Filipino
4. Curriculum and lesson note/ Lesson plan
- Is the teacher guide for running a particular lesson and it includes the goals and objectives for thatlesson or
subject matter.-Guide of the teachers to assist them in an orderly presentation of a lesson to the learners in order
tofacilitate learning.THERFORE: Lesson note is not a curriculum.NATURE OF CURRICULUM IN SCHOOL
4 Fundamental question
which must be answered when talking about the nature of curriculum inschool.1. What educational purposes
should the school seek?2 .What educational experiences can be provided to attain this purpose?3 .How can these
educational experiences be organized effectively to achieve these purposes?~Is it student centered or Teacher
centered?4. How can we determine whether or not the expected objectives have been achieved?~ Through using
test, performance observation and other form of evaluation.

IMPORTANCE OF CURRICULUM IN SCHOOL


Curriculum
- is the HEART of school system because there can be no school if there is no curriculum.-is the very vital
software without which building and other facilities will have nothing to do in school as well as the teacher too.
CURRICULUM AS A PROCESS AND AS A PRODUCT

PROCESSS
Curriculum processes
- are the procedures involved in creating using and evaluating thecurricula represented in various documents or
products such as guides, syllabi and others.-is the collective term that encompasses all of the consideration
about which curriculum workers ponderand ultimately use to make choices in the development and evaluation
of curriculum project. Theseprocesses involved changes that some students, teachers, school staff n community
memberswelcome, but others resist either actively or passively.In some cases the curriculum development
process proceeds from the top downwards.TOP-DOWN PROCESSThis can be defined through four phases of
curriculum development processes
1. The curriculum presented to the teachers
2. The curriculum adopted by the teachers.
3. The curriculum assimilated by the learners.
4. The evaluated curriculum .BOTTOM-UP PROCESS

Four different phases can be identified


1 .What the society or the parents want.
2 Responses provided by the teachers in the schools.
3. The collection of this responses and the effort to identify some common aspects.
4. The development of some common standards and their evaluation.

PRODUCTS
Curriculum Products or Projects-
result from curriculum development processes and provide the bases for instructional decisions in classrooms
.Curriculum projects include curriculum guides , course of study,syllabi, resources units, list of goals and
objectives and other documents that deals with the content of schooling.

curriculum guides
- includes details about the topics to be taught, predetermined teaching goals and suggestions for instructional
strategies_Ben Peretz, 1990, p.25_

Course of study or syllabi


-usually specify the content, the learning outcomes, and the time allocation for the various topics.

Recourses unit
- includes learning outcomes, suggestions for teaching,source of information , and prepared instructions units.
THEREFORE: The term Curriculum is a total package of what school do to make learners become what society
expects them to become, namely good citizens, who are not only able to understand or learn certain school
subjects but fully integrated individuals that are able to fit into society and contribute their own share as well ,
to the progress of that society
