were the 'Crowns of the Kingdoms' which are symbolic of the Elements, and associated
Ethereal Kingdoms and beings inhabiting them.

(In view of the crucial importance of the prayer niche, this view is persuasive. The phrase
“neither of the ast nor of the West” suggests centrality and is therefore open to being
interpreted as applying to the Tree of Bliss, and the water symbolism mentioned earlier
plays an important part in the paradisal motif of Muslim prayer rugs. Often a rug depicts
a tree growing out of a vase, symbolising a divine source of water, and on some rugs may
be seen aquatic fowls which indicate the proximity of water in paradisal symbolism)

the h in "hope," either of guttural origin, as in mih, corresponding to the Greek me/gas,

muhr "seal," S. mudrā; ٍ‫ گا‬gāh "place," Z. gātu. Lastly, it is originally labial, as in ٍْ‫ ک‬kōh,
compared with Zand-Pāzand ‫ کْپ‬kop and A. ‫ لاف‬qāf, ‫ کْف‬in ‫ کْفة‬kūfat. Accordingly we find
it interchangeable with ّّ,‫ّن‬,‫ّق‬,‫ّف‬,‫ّس‬,‫ّخ‬,‫ّح‬,‫ّج‬,‫ا‬, and ‫ی‬. In Persian ٍ is of two kinds: mani-
fest or sounded (zāhir), and concealed or mute (maḵẖfī). The former is enunciated
whether preceded by fatḥah, ẓammah, or kasrah, as rah "a road," anduh "grief," farbih
"fat" (pl. rahhā, anduhhā, girihhā). In the diminutive it is marked with fatḥah, as rahak "a
little road," anduhak "a trifling sorrow," girihak "a small button." When taking the iẓāfah
it is marked with kasrah, as rahi man "my road," anduhi man "My sorrow," girihi man
"my button." Mute ٍ occurs principally in four kinds of words; (1) in nouns bearing a re-
semblance or relationship to another object, as dasta "a handle," from dast "the hand,"
&c.; (2) in the past active participle, or the sim- ple passive participle, as kushta "having
slain" or "slain," &c.; (3) in adjectives, specifying time, which are formed from the words
sāl "year," māh "month," roz "day," and shab "night," as yak-sāla "yearling," du-māha
"bi-monthly," har roza "daily," chahār-shaba "quadri-noc- turnal, every fourth night"; (4)
in all those Arabic feminines, terminating in ‫ــَــّة‬, whose ‫ ة‬has not in Persian changed to ‫ت‬,

25
that is, roughly speaking, in feminine ad- jectives, and such nouns as are not abstract sub-
stantives. In the plural of such words the h is generally, but by no means neces- sarily,
dropped before the termination hā, as ḵẖāna-hā "houses," &c.; while before the termina-
tion ān it is changed to g, as āhū-bara "fawn," pl. āhū-baragān. When taking the sign
iẓāfah the sign hamzah is placed over it, pronounced with kasrah, although the latter sign
is not expressed in writing, as ‫ خاًۀّهي‬ḵẖānaʼi man "my house." For further particulars
consult the Grammar.

‫ ُا‬hā

‫ ُا‬hā, Have a care! be ready! here! behold! whether? is it so? a slap on the face; white on
a bird's face; the plural termination, formerly mostly of things inanimate, as sang "a
stone," sang-hā "stones," while the plural of animated beings was generally (not exclu-
sively) formed by ān, as ādamī "man," pl. ādami- yān "men, mankind." In modern Persian,
however, the ending hā has almost entirely superseded ān both for inanimated and ani-
mated beings.

‫ ُا‬hā

A ‫ ُا‬hā, (the 3rd pers. sing. of the affixed pronoun) Her, to, of, from, or by her; (referring
to broken plurals) theirs, &c.; (interjection) lo! behold! take! (particle of swearing) by, as:
*lā hāʼllāhi, Not, by God!+--hāʼ, Take! give! grant! name of the letter h.

JIM-YA (13)

Note, a possible error: the roots are forcefully interwoven, unlike the rest; thus th first “ a”
or Jx and -Yx is put together, might be a false cue. Note, the 'Ya' may be used as an empty
vowel, merely for the purpose of the number.
