1.2 Industry Analysis.

1.2.1 World Scenario
As per www.ffmnag.com, (July,2013) report, Increasing sales of passenger and commercial
vehicles in developing countries and a strong demand for replacement tyres is providing
significant opportunities for players in the automotive tyre industry. A projected CAGR of
around 4 per cent over the next five years for the global tyre market means an estimated $187
billion by 2017. The passenger car segment is forecast to witness the highest growth over the
next five years. Regionally, the APAC region is anticipated to lead growth during the forecast
period. It is expected to see the strongest growth in rubber demand, reflecting the strength of
the tyre market in China, India, Thailand and Vietnam.

The global automotive tyre market is highly consolidated and consists of passenger car tyres,
heavy truck tyres and other segments. North America dominates this market with
approximately 30 per cent of the total global demand for tyres. Fuel efficiency and safety
concerns are key factors influencing the purchase of tyres in developed markets, which are
transitioning into higher-performance tyres. Japan and Europe have implemented stringent tyre
performance criteria (covering rolling resistance related fuel saving, wet grip related braking
distance and noise reduction). Europe anticipates a 20 million tones reduction in traffic related
carbon dioxide emissions per year due to enhanced tyre performance.

1.2.2 Indian scenario

The Indian Tyre Industry is an integral part of the Auto Sector – It contributes to ~3% of the
manufacturing GDP of India and ~0.5% of the total GDP directly. So, let’s understand the
dynamics of the Tyre Industry in India.

Indian tyre industry has almost doubled from ~Rs 30,000 crores in 2010-11 to ~Rs 59,500
crores in 2017-18 of which 90-95% came from the domestic markets. The top four companies
– MRF, Apollo Tyres and JK Tyres have ~65% of the market share in terms of revenue. In
terms of segmentation tyres can be divided in two ways – based on end market and based on
product.
5

1.2.2.1 Cost Structure

Tyre Industry is known for its capital-intensive structure where 60% to 65% of the revenues is
raw material cost. The other important cost involved are SG&A (selling general &
administrative) which roughly contribute from 6% to 12% of the revenues and employee cost
contributing from 7% to 14% of revenues.

Figure No:
1.2.2.2 Raw Material Costs

As we saw above that around 250 different raw material are put together to manufacture a
tyre but the major cost generating raw materials are natural rubber, synthetic rubber and crude
derivatives like carbon black which contribute to ~80% to 85% of the total raw material cost.
Hence, rubber and crude price are key variable to Tyre Company’s profitability

Historical average gross margins vs rubber & crude prices:

Figure No:
6

Figure No:
The Indian tyre industry has been under raw material pressure for last two year due to increase
in rubber and crude prices which can be clearly seen in the above comparison charts. As per
the managements the pressure on the raw materials is expected to continue in the shorter term
due to increasing crude prices

2.2.3 Average SG&A & Employee cost (% of revenue)

Table No:

From the above chart it is clear that each year the cost of employment is increasing. Along with
that the price of raw materials is also increasing. But the companies are unable to increase the
tyre price accordingly. In 2019 the auto industry is facing a huge downfall due to several
reasons. Many auto manufacturing companies has stopped production and some are under
threat of lock out. Naturally the other related companies also get affected. Especially companies
which provides materials directly to the auto manufactures.

2.1 COMPANY PROFILE
Goodyear is one of the world’s leading tire companies with operations in most regions of the
world and one of the most recognized brand names. Together with its U.S. and international
subsidiaries, Goodyear develops, manufactures, markets, and distributes tires for most
applications.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is an American multinational tire manufacturing
company founded in 1898 by Frank Seiberling and based in Akron, Ohio. The thirteen original
employees manufactured bicycle and carriage tires, rubber horseshoe pads, and poker chips.
The manufactures pneumatic casings, inner tubes, and solid and cushion tires for all types of
vehicles.

The company takes pride in their products, services and relationships because of their valued
customers. Seiberling named the company after the courageous pioneer Charles Goodyear; the
discoverer of vulcanization. He also determined the distinctive Wingfoot trademark that
remains a symbolic link with the company's past.
9

Goodyear South Asia Tyres Private Limited was established in the year 2001. They operate as
a subsidiary of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. It manufactures tires for automobiles,
commercial trucks, light trucks, motorcycles, SUVs, race cars, airplanes, farm equipment and
heavy earth-mover machinery.

As of 2017, Goodyear is one of the top four tire manufacturers along with Bridgestone (Japan),
Michelin (France) and Continental (Germany).

Goodyear gives employment to 65,000 people and manufactures its products in 48 facilities in
22 countries around the world. Presently, most exciting new cars use wider, lower profile tyres
to enhance both their handling and looks. This type of tyre places a priority on aggressive
traction and response. In the past, that meant limited capabilities in poor weather, significant
compromises in ride comfort and tread life.

Now, a wide range of Goodyear tyres, including the new Eagle ultra-high performance and
Excellence radials, deliver outstanding performance, all season capability, and uncompromised
comfort and tyre life.

Later the company completely stopped production of tractor tyres and focused in car tyres. All
the machineries which were used for making tractor tyres were shifted to Delhi were the other

earlier even though Goodyear Tire & Rubber is successful at integrating small

to counter these challenges.

 Investment in Research and Development is below the fastest growing players in the
industry. Even though Goodyear Tire & Rubber is spending above the industry average
on Research and Development, it has not been able to compete with the leading players
in the industry in terms of innovation. It has come across as a mature firm looking
forward to bring out products based on tested features in the market.
 The marketing of the products left a lot to be desired. Even though the product is a
success in terms of sale but its positioning and unique selling proposition is not clearly
defined which can lead to the attacks in this segment from the competitors

& Rubber products by the state as well as federal government contractors.
 Decreasing cost of transportation because of lower shipping prices can also bring down
the cost of Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s products thus providing an opportunity to the
company - either to boost its profitability or pass on the benefits to the customers to
gain market share
 The new technology provides an opportunity to Goodyear Tire & Rubber to practices
differentiated pricing strategy in the new market. It will enable the firm to maintain its
loyal customers with great service and lure new customers through other value oriented
propositions
 New customers from online channel – Over the past few years the company has
invested vast sum of money into the online platform. This investment has opened new

3.2 Details of Roles and responsibilities assigned with intern.

I was placed in the HR department of Goodyear tyres especially into the training
and development team. I had many opportunity to improve the skills and talents
in training. I was entrusted with arranging the training session for the contract
laboureres as well for the hourly associates. Before arranging the training sessions
for the employees we had to identify the training needs. For identifying training
needs we made a check off sheet to identify the needs. During the course of my
internship I suggested the HR team to conduct a general training for all the
employees at least once in a three month, which we made into practice.

A regular certification was introduced. All the employees have to undergo one
day training and certify themselves as fit for the task assigned to them.

 MIS Entry

MIS entry is taking attendance of employees and entering into their details into the respective
files into the computer. By keeping this kind of documents we can recognise easily about the
33

people who have undergone training and who are not yet received training. With this we can
have a track on training. Each employee has got a file where the documents are saved. First
they will enter their names into the attendenvce sheet which I was asked to modify.

This training attendance and evaluation sheet for further reference will be kept in files of
different departments.

 Conducting training for new employees

In Goodyear tyres all the new employees have to undergo a certain days of training. The major
training sessions are safety, quality, and manufacturing process. It is also a time to introduce

technologies with power point presentation and stimulation.

I have done my internship in HR, Training and Development Department of Goodyear South
Asia Tyres Limited. The internship was for 60 days, from June 27th to August 26th. During the
period I have got familiar with the different activities and functions handled by Training
department. I was also assisting in the apprentice, contract labour, EPP labour Training, which
was one of the major task handled by the department during that period. Fortunately I got an
opportunity to do a project in the company, the topic for the project was ‘contract workers
training need identification. I have done some duties in Safety department too. So it helped me
to familiarize with the different tasks and functions performed in that department.

I had a good experience in Goodyear Limited and there is a good atmosphere to work. Every
month there is a monthly meeting conducted by each department in the organization in which
they arrange various entertainment activities, there was also birthday celebrations of the
employees. Another peculiar feature that I observed there was that they don’t degrade people
according to the positions carried by each people. There is a a day specially dedicated for the
celebrations and gathering all the people together. The employees in the organization actively
participate and perform well. Their family members can also be participate. It helps to explore
the skills and abilities of their employees. The company had conducted a blood donation camp
on Independence Day most of the people donated their blood including me.

CONCLUSION

Goodyear is one of the best tyre manufacturing companies in the world. It has got plants all
over the world. In India Goodyear has got two plants. Both the plants are giving more
importance to employee’s safety rather than profit. It has developed goodwill due to facilities
and services provided to their customers. It is the success of employees who keep the company
near to their heart. The management is always successful in implementing the changes,
especially the new technologies. Training and development team is playing a crucial role in
Goodyear. They train the new employee’s to give the maximum effort to bring quality in
manufacturing tyre. Most of the time it is seen that before training people have less knowledge
and after training it gets increased.
