Globalization of Culture Through the Media

Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. Media Imperialism and Cultural Imperialism

ii. Cultural Hybridity
iii. Global Village

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that media has
an effect on the lives of people, it either brings good or bad effects. However,
reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that there is
even a theory regarding media influence called “magic bullet” or
“hypodermic needle” theories. When these theories were made, media might
not have been as popular as it is right now. The term “hypodermic needle” for
the theory seems appropriate because media may seem harmless but in
reality, it is not what it looks like. Media can bring people together, make a
great change for the greater good, or it can destroy the reputation of a
person, lives of people by just the words that they disseminate to people.
Anyway, people debated about the media’s influence especially on its effects
on communities and cultures. And from what we can witness just from the
Philippines, media is really influential, one recent example is the fact that
people are accepting and adapting the culture of South Korea, how they
dress, what they eat, and almost all of the practices of the Koreans or in my
experience I tend to buy or collect Nike shoes which is a Western Lifestyle.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that media is just
a simple subject or topic. However, reading the article/understanding the
lesson, I now think/realize that there is so much more to it. It is said that there is
a difference between cultural imperialism and media imperialism. Based on
my understanding, media imperialism is a theory wherein a larger nation uses
their influence on smaller nations which greatly affects those smaller nations,
their identity is lessened because of following or idolizing the larger nation
which leads them to kind of imitate the other. On the other hand, cultural
imperialism is similar to media imperialism, but the main focus or influencer is
the Western nation, where they target weak and smaller nations to impose their
culture and products. Those small nations are easily swayed by the Western
nation because most idolizes them.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson I thought that cultural
imperialism and globalization both contributes to Globalization. However,
reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that we can
view that the media contribute to the homogenization of differences in terms
of culture across the world. These two are key factors in media globalization. I
have read in the article the impact of media to both cultural imperialism and
globalization of culture. One example that has been stated in the article is
when and McDonalds advertisement from 2000 has greatly improved the
aspect of Western Culture globally. It has increased its market during its first 10
years in China. Also in this case we can see how this are reshaping our world
globally.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?

i. Is it possible for cultural imperialism to vanish in the future?

ii. Do the media itself create the globalization of culture?
iii. Does the globalization of culture an old phenomenon that has been only
intensified by the media?
