Preface

The Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) is the National Standardization Forum.
The Brazilian Standards, which are the responsibility of the Brazilian Committees (ABNT / CB),
the Sectorial Standards Organizations (ABNT / ONS) and the Special Study Commissions (ABNT /
CEE), are elaborated by Study Groups (CE), formed by representatives of the sectors involved,
including: producers, consumers and neutral (universities, laboratories and others).

The ABNT Technical Documents are prepared according to the rules of the ABNT Directive, Part
2.
BRAZILIAN STANDARD ABNT NBR 13541-2:2017

The Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) draws attention to the possibility that
some elements of this document may be subject to patent law. ABNT shall not be deemed
responsible for the identification of any patent rights.

ABNT NBR 11900-1 was developed by the Special Study Commission on Steel Cables and
Accessories (ABNT/CEE-113). Its Project circulated in National Consultation according to Notice
nr 10, from 11.10.2012 to 10.12.2012, as Project 113:000.00-001-1.

This Standard, under the general title “Termination for steel wire ropes”, is expected to contain
the following parts:

- Part 1: Thimble;
- Part 2: Wedge Socket;
- Part 3: Ferrule-secured eye;
- Part 4: Weightless and weight clamps;
- Part 5: Socket.
This Standard is based on ISO 2262:1984, EN 13411-1:2002 and EN 13411-1:2002/Amendment
1:2008.
This Standard cancels and replaces ABNT NBR 13544:1995.
The Scope of this Brazilian Standard in English is the following:

Scope
The Standard specifies the minimum requirements for wire rope thimbles made from steel
plates. The thimbles are projected to be used in wire ropes of six or eight strands of 6mm to
83mm.

Termination for steel wire ropes

Part 1: Thimble

1 Scope

This part of ABNT NBR 11900 specifies the minimum requirements for wire rope thimbles made
from steel plates. The thimbles are projected to be used in wire ropes of six or eight strands of
6mm to 83mm.
BRAZILIAN STANDARD ABNT NBR 13541-2:2017

2 Normative References
The documents listed below are essential for the implementation of this document. For dated
references, only the mentioned editions apply. For undated references, the most recent editions
of that document apply (including amendments).

ABNT NBR 6323, Steel or cast iron products - Hot-dip zinc coating – Specification

ABNT NBR ISO 2408 - Steel wire ropes for general purposes – Minimum requirements

requirements and terms of acceptance

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
thimble
steel cable accessory drop-shaped with section half-round, used for protection of the steel cable
eyelet

3.2
nominal diameter
ND
nominal diameter of the steel cable to which the thimble is intended

4 Thimble characteristics

4.1 Material
The steel for the manufacture of the thimbles must have the following mechanical properties
when tested in accordance with ISO 6892-1:
a) tensile strength from 360 MPa to 520 MPa;

b) minimum elongation of 20% after rupture.

4.2 Construction

The thimbles should be well finished and free from any faults, defects, sharp edges or
roughness that could damage the steel cable.
BRAZILIAN STANDARD ABNT NBR 13541-2:2017

The joint formed by the ends of the thimbles of nominal size up to 45mm cannot be welded,
allowing a spacing less than or equal to 2 times the thickness of the plate.

It is recommended that thimbles of nominal sizes greater than or equal to 51mm have welded
or reinforced joints (see 4.3 and Figure 1b).

4.3 Format and dimensions

The format and dimensions of the thimbles must be according to Figure 1 and Table 1,
respectively.
BRAZILIAN STANDARD ABNT NBR 13541-2:2017
BRAZILIAN STANDARD ABNT NBR 13541-2:2017

4.4 Surface protection

The thimbles must be provided hot dip galvanized, according to ABNT NBR 6323, with zinc
deposition in accordance with the plate thickness (see Table 2).

Table 2 – Hot dip galvanizing – Deposition

Average thickness of the Minimum mass per unit

Thickness coating area
µm g/m²
2,0 mm ≤ and < 4,0 mm 56 400
4,0 mm ≤ and 6 < 6,0 mm 70 500
and 6,0 mm 84 600

5 Type Tests

5.1 General

The type tests demonstrate that the thimbles certified by the manufacturer as meeting the
requirements of this Standard have the mechanical properties specified therein. The purpose of
these tests is to prove the design, material and method of manufacture of each finished thimble
size.

All thimbles to be subjected to the type tests must comply with the other requirements in this
Standard. The tests specified in 5.2 and 5.3 shall be carried out on each thimble size of each
design, material and method of manufacture.

If there is any change in design, material specification, method of manufacture or any

dimension outside the normal manufacturing tolerances which can lead to a modification of the
mechanical properties specified in Section 4, type tests specified in 5.2 and 5.3 should be
performed in the modified thimble.

The test must be performed on two samples of each thimble size of each design, material and
method of manufacture.

5.2 Load test

The nominal diameter of the steel cable for the test must be the same nominal diameter of the
thimble.
BRAZILIAN STANDARD ABNT NBR 13541-2:2017

The thimbles must be installed in 6-strand steel cable sling with steel core, according to ABNT
NBR ISO 2408, for thimbles up to 60 mm. For larger thimbles, a 6-strand steel cable sling must
be used, in accordance with ISO 10425: 2003, Table J.1.

The test load must be applied to the thimbles with pins with a diameter of 1,5 d (where d is the
nominal diameter of the steel cable). The test load to be applied axially must be 27% of the
minimum breaking load of the steel cable class 6x19, category 1 960, with steel core.

After the load test and the removal of the load, any permanent reduction measured in
dimension C shall not exceed 15% of its original value.

If any thimble fails the test, two other sneakers of the same diameter, design, material and
method of manufacture shall be re-tested. If both pass the test, the thimbles must be approved.

If one or both fail the re-test or both fail the initial test, the thimbles are to be considered as
non-approved.

5.3 Thimble opening test

Thimbles with a nominal diameter of up to and including 45 mm must be subjected to a thimble

opening test.

The thimble must be able to be opened and closed once without heat application. This opening
must be sufficient for inserting a component of 1.5 times the wire rope diameter.

After the test, the opening of the thimble shall not show verifiable cracks by testing for
penetrating liquid or magnetic particles.

If one or both fail in the test, the thimbles should be considered as not approved.

6 Verification and test

6.1 Verification of the dimensions

The dimensions shall be verified by instruments having an accuracy of at least 0,1 mm.

The thickness A should be measured in a location which is not affected by the manufacturing
process, such as, for example, in the are of cut AA of Figure 1a.
BRAZILIAN STANDARD ABNT NBR 13541-2:2017

6.2 Material

The registration of the thimble supplier must be used to verify the material used in the
manufacturing.

6.3 Construction

The thimble should be visually inspected for surface effects that could cause damage to the user
or to the steel wire rope

7 Designation

The thimbles shall be designated as follows:

a) name;
b) nominal diameter (ND);
c) number of this Standard and year.

EXAMPLE Thimble for steel wire cable, ND 13 mm, ABNT NBR 11900-1:2013

8 Marking

The thimbles must be marked on their body, embossed, as shown in Figure 1, at least the
following information:

a) symbol or mark of the manufacturer;

b) nominal diameter (ND);
c) tracking code of the batch.

9 Certificate
The manufacturer or supplier shall, if requested, provide a certificate containing the following
information:
a) a declaration of compliance with this Standard;
b) the name and address of the manufacturer;
c) nominal diameter of the thimble (cable diameter);
d) tracking code of the batch.
