Going Zero Waste

It nearly seems impossible for us to escape
waste in our everyday lives. We see thousands
of them, everywhere!

According to research, Americans dump 35

billion plastic bottles every year. It was also
believed that U.S cut approximately 40 million
newspapers equivalent of about half a million of
trees. Consequently, these paper and plastic
ends up particularly in landfills and sometimes
are seen on oceans which ultimately took 500-
1,000 years for them to degrade. Many were
struggling on making solutions of this
phenomenal problem. Years passed, recycling
was introduced around the world.

Recycling is a method of converting waste

materials which are of no use into something
new and useful. For example, starting an herb

garden with reused plastic bottles; making a

piggy bank out of tin cans and; crafting milk
cartons into spooky lanterns. Recyclable
materials that can be recycled in large
quantities include plastic, metal, glass,
aluminum cans, newspapers and more.
It is also the last component of the Three
R’s. Rhetorically stating, its main objective is to
improvise those discarded materials and reuse
them for different purposes. It also resolves the
environmental issues and conserves energy.
Not only it helps conserves the resources but
also reduce air pollution, slow down global
warming, minimize garbage expansion and
lessen waste products in landfills which is very
beneficial for Earth’s overall health. Therefore,
its purpose is multifold.

“Recycling doesn’t just implements waste

disposal but is also a factor of enhancing one’s
creativity.” stated by Riva Literatos, a Grade 8

student. This process have made a huge

impact. Through recycling, we can promote a
better environment and be able to preserve the
resources for the future generation.

#1 Recycling Fact: You can make a difference!

 Experts estimate that U.S. consumers throw away 400 million used
pieces of electronic equipment every year.
 Recycling one ton of paper can save 7,000 gallons of water.
 Recycling and composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
 Every year over 100,000 marine animals are killed by consuming
or becoming tangled in plastic bags.
 Recycling helps conserve the Earth’s limited natural resources.
 Humans have been practicing recycling for thousands of years.
 To produce one ton of newspaper requires 24 trees.
 Recycling one aluminum can can save enough energy to power a
television for up to three hours.
 Glass that ends up in landfills takes over a million years to
decompose.

 Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour and most are
not recycled.
 One million tons of recovered paper is enough to fill more than
14,000 railroad cars.
 Over a ton of resources is saved for every ton of glass recycled.
 A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as
a new can in as little as 60 days.
 In the United States, In 2014, about 136 million tons of waste went
into landfills.
 Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy than incinerating it.
 In 2014, in the United States, over 89% of corrugated boxes were
recycled.
 Most bottles and jars contain at least 25% recycled glass.
 Over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans are used every year.
 Over 25 billion styrofoam cups are thrown away in the United
States each year.
 Recycling 1 ton of plastic can save over 7 cubic yards of landfill
space.
 Around 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every year
in the U.S.
 Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100-
watt bulb for four hours.
 99% of lead acid batteries get recycled.
 Recycling 1 ton of aluminum cans conserves the equivalent of
1,665 gallons of gasoline.
 In 2014, in the United States, about 258 million tons of municipal
solid waste were generated.
 On average, each person creates over 4 pounds of waste every
single day.
