Total Quality Management (TQM)
Total Quality Management is a comprehensive, organization-wide effort to improve the
quality of products and services, applicable to all organizations.
Total Quality Management is an approach to the art of management that originated in
Japanese industry in the 1950's and has become steadily more popular in the West since the
early 1980's. Total Quality is a description of the culture, attitude and organization of a
company that aims to provide, and continue to provide, its customers with products and
services that satisfy their needs. The culture requires quality in all aspects of the company's
operations, with things being done right first time, and defects and waste eradicated from
operations. TQM is the way of managing for the future, and is far wider in its application
than just assuring product or service quality – it is a way of managing people and business
processes to ensure complete customer satisfaction at every stage, internally and externally.
TQM, combined with effective leadership, results in an organization doing the right things

Deming’s 14-Point Program for Improving Quality


1. Create constancy of purpose for improvement of product and service.
2. Adopt the new philosophy.
3. Cease dependence on mass inspection.
4. End the practice of awarding business on the price tag alone.
5. Improve constantly and forever the system of production and training.
6. Institute training.
7. Institute leadership.
8. Drive out fear.
9. Break down barriers between staff areas.
10. Eliminate slogans, exhortations, and targets for the workforce.
11. Eliminate numerical quotas.
12. Remove barriers to pride in workmanship.
13. Institute a vigorous program of education and retraining.
14. Take action to accomplish the program. right, first time.

Akij Food and Beverage Ltd.


“Brings Quality in Life”.

The history of Akij Group stretches back to later part of the forties. In its infancy, the Group
started in humble way with jute trading which was known as the golden fiber of the country,
earning highest amount of foreign exchange. This sector gave a real boost to the revenue
earning of the Group as well as making a substantial contribution to government exchequer.
With the passage of time, the Group undertook new ventures and presently there are 15 units
of industries under its umbrella like cigarettes, handmade cigarettes, printing & packaging,
jute mills, textiles, Hand board, Particle boards, Matches, Zarda, Cement, pharmaceutical,
leather processing and real‐estate business are in operation, catering jobs for more than
32,000 people in various categories. The Group has plans for setting up more projects. The
projects are already in pipeline. Foreign investors have shown keen interest in joining with
Akij group for joint ventures. I hope that the matter is under our active consideration and will
soon mature. This will also help the nation's economy growth and will create job
opportunities to various professionals.
AFBL Product
Akij food &Beverage limited started their journey officially on July 2006 with three products
but now there are lot of products on its rosters. The products which are offering now
by the company are given below:

As there are lots of products variety in AFBL. We will discuss about CSD (Carbonated Soft
Drinks) line products, procedure, quality measurement techniques.
CSD
CSD: Full meaning of CSD is Carbonated Soft Drinks. Purified CO2 and Treated Water is
used for making these soft drinks.

7. Lemu (PET) 8. Lemu (CAN)

Here is a discussion about some of the product.


Speed: Speed is kind of soft drinks and often it is called energy drinks. Speed (PET) gas
volume is 3.1-3.4 ppm and in Speed (CAN) gas volume is 2.6-3.0 ppm. Main raw materials
are
1. Carbonated Water
2. Refined Sugar
3. Sodium Benzoate (Perseverative –E211)
4. Citric Acid (Acidulant)
5. Tri-Sodium Citrate (Acidity Regulator)
6. Caffeine
7. Food Grade Color (E102, E110)
8. Food Grade Flavor
9. Vitamin
Mojo: Mojo is a another CSD soft drinks. Mojo (PET) gas volume is 4.1-4.4 ppm and in
Mojo light (CAN) gas volume is 3.3-3.7 ppm. Main raw materials are
i. Carbonated Water
ii. Refined Sugar
iii. Color (Caramel)
iv. Phosphoric Acid (0.058 %) as Acidulant
v. Flavoring (Including Caffeine < 1 %)
Test Procedure of CSD Product:
Teste: All the product teste should be appropriate. They have taken sample from every batch
Oder: Oder also should be appropriate.
Appearance: Appearance also should be good.
CO2 test: CO2 is an important component in CSD product. They have to ensure about that.
Brix: In beverage industry “% of dissolved solid with 20˚c temperature it’s called ˚Brix”
In general, “% of dissolved Sucrose with 20˚c temperature it’s called ˚Brix”
Torque test: Cap/closer torque also should be appropriate.
Test Procedure of pH:
i. At first take a pH meter.
ii. Take some sample in a beaker.
iii. pH electrode dip into the beaker.
iv. Then take reading
Acidity: The capacity of base to neutralize the equipment amount of acid is
called the acidity of the base.
Acidity Test of Speed, Clemon (only for citric acid beverage):
Acidity Test Equipment:
i. Burette ii. Pipette iii. Conical Flask
Chemicals: i. Indicator (P) ii. Base Solution (NaOH – 0.106 N)
Calculation:
B.R × strength of NaOH × Equivalent weight of acid (citric acid) × 100
Sample weight (ml) × 1000
Result: ……..
Weight : They have measured the weight of the product by taking sample.
Tare Weight : {( package size in Ltr × G.V (max) × gas constant (Exp:1.856) +
( preform wt + closer wt ) ÷ appearance density
Example for 250 ml mojo :
= {(0.25 × 4.1× 1.856 ) + ( 15.2 gm + 2.24 ) ÷ 1.04
= 1.9024 + 17.44 ÷ 1.04
= 19.3424 ÷ 1.04
= 18.60
Date code and Labels: They also check date code and label of every product by automatic
hi-speed electronic eye.
Here is Flow diagram of CSD Lines:
In AFBL all CSD and CAN line bought from KRONES an German machine manufacturer
and tech-giant. AFBL and Krones are always R&D and try to make their production process
better gradually.
Storage
The raw material should be stored in the air-conditioned room. Finished goods should be
stored in rows and columns so that it remains safe and in original shape. The temperature of
the cold room should be in 5-10 degree. And they have 11 MW own generation capacity
available in the factory.
Cleanliness
Cleanliness is the main cause to increase the quality. The all side of factory should be clean
the floor of the factory should be washed daily. Garbage of the factory should place in
separate place. cleanliness is must to produce the better quality. Everything which is used to
produce products like steel bucket, steel jar, tubs etc. should be washed before and after
using. Every tub and jar in which material is kept should be covered with net. Do not keep
the material without cover. There should be proper ventilation in the factory. Cleanliness is
must for the customer’s specially for children health even it is must quality maintenance.
Cleanliness is also checked by the health department. It is must for getting quality.

TQM in AFBL
This is Total Quality Management Project Report. Human resource is the most important
factor for any organization and success of any Organization is depending upon its resource. If
human resource of organization is not happy with the organization. It will adversely affect
the organization. The higher degree of commitment toward work will improve productivity
and will decrease rejection cause due to human factor. So, to make the people happy is the
responsibility of the organization. So, this study is helpful to measure the level of
commitment toward work and to know the factor affecting the commitment level.
1.In AFBL they have created and published to all employees a statement of the aims and
purposes of the company. The management demonstrate their commitment to this statement.
2. Learn the new philosophy. We found that they are habituated with 5’S (Sort, set in order,
Shine, Standardize and Sustain) and KAIZEN.
3. They understand the purpose of inspection – to reduce the cost and improve the processes.
4. They are practicing of the end of awarding business on the basis of price tag alone.
5.They are trying to improve constantly and forever the system of production and service.
6. They institute training for Top to field level employee.
7. They are trying to teach and institute leadership for Top to field level employee.
8. Now Employee are kind of drive out their fear and create an environment of innovation.
9.They have optimized the team efforts towards the aims and purposes of the company.
10. They are trying to eliminate exhortations for the workforce.
11. They are trying to eliminate numerical quotas for production.
12. They are trying to remove the barriers that rob pride of workmanship.
13. AFBL is always encourage learning and self-improvement.
14. They have taken action to accomplish the transformation.
